The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a container ship that lost control, causing alarm. The situation, though tense, was resolved \u2062safely without any damage \u200dto the bridge. Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 6, 2024 at 10:15am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Charleston, South Carolina\u2019s Arthur Ravenel Bridge became the latest such structure to be evacuated because of an out-of-control ship Wednesday, two months after the container ship Dali lost power and crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, destroying the bridge and killing six construction workers.<\/p>\n<p>The situation in on the Cooper River was not as damaging but just as frightening, at least initially, when the U.S. Coast Guard put out the warning that a container ship leaving the harbor had lost control of its engines, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.live5news.com\/2024\/06\/05\/container-ship-stuck-full-throttle-prompted-temporary-ravenel-bridge-closure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WCSC-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Harbor Pilots Dispatch contacted the Coast Guard shortly after noon on Wednesday to inform them that the pilot on board the MSC Michigan said the ship was at \u201cnearly full throttle\u201d and that the engine controls were stuck there.<\/p>\n<p>The ship was moving 14 to 17 knots, the outlet reported, headed from North Charleston for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/missing-toddler-case-comes-devastating-end-savannah-landfill-mother-hit-georgias-unique-malice-murder-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Savannah<\/a>, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur sector command center folks immediately started coordinating with our local partners to include launching our own vessels to clear vessel traffic out of the way of the container ship and also coordination with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-puts-plans-for-national-police-oversight-board-on-hold\/\" title=\"Biden Admin Puts Plans For National Police Oversight Board On Hold\">local police departments<\/a> to ensure traffic on the Ravenel Bridge was stopped ensuring that the public was safe,\u201d Coast Guard Sector Charleston Deputy Cmdr. Randy Preston told WCSC.<\/p>\n<p>Vessels from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/coast-guard-refuses-enforce-new-california-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coast Guard<\/a> and other agencies sped ahead of the Michigan to clear a pathway for it, and police shut down traffic on the Ravenel Bridge in case of a collision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFort Moultrie Beach was also evacuated in case the ship needed to ground,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were doing a normal run from Waterfront Park to Charleston Maritime Center Aquarium Wharf, and we just heard chatter on the radio,\u201d Iris Duke, the captain for Charleston Water Taxi, said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do major bridges need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-johnson-impeachment-appears-to-be-distraction-from-what-democrat-leadership-knew-about-jan-6\/\" title=\"Sen. Johnson: Impeachment Appears to Be Distraction From What Democrat Leadership Knew About Jan. 6\">increased security measures<\/a>?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe turned it up because we heard \u2018Mayday\u2019 and then we heard \u2018Runaway ship,\u2019 so we kind of cruised out there,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Two recreational boaters were injured when the wake from the speeding Michigan pushed their boat onto the rocks. They were rescued and taken to a local hospital with what WCSC said were non<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/off-duty-austin-police-officer-forced-to-confront-armed-suspect\/\" title=\"Off-duty Austin police officer forced to confront armed suspect\">-life-threatening injuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclist Lisa Riente told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counton2.com\/news\/local-news\/ravenel-bridge-closed-to-vessel-losing-propulsion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WCBD-TV<\/a> that she was crossing the bridge when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/war-police-takes-sickening-turn-hero-cop-killed-ambush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police<\/a> stopped her, told her to leave her bike where it was and get in their car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI threw my bike down, grabbed my phone, and jumped in the back of the police car with a couple of other pedestrians and it was kind of scary,\u201d Riente told the station. \u201cWe were going across the bridge trying to get other pedestrians and warn them that there was an out-of-control boat headed towards the bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WCBD described the Michigan as a 997-foot, 74,000-ton ship.<\/p>\n<p>Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker told the outlet that the Ravenel Bridge did not suffer any damage from the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the ship\u2019s crew was able to resolve the issue with the engine control and get it clear of the harbor and anchored about 8.5 nautical miles offshore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnytime a vessel can\u2019t control its propulsion it\u2019s concerning.
