Other Democrats are encouraging the party to acknowledge concerns about Biden, including his age and the state of the race, as the campaign tries to underscore the importance of participation this cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3029516\/biden-allies-overdrive-dispel-wall-street-journal-report-too-old\/\"><strong>BIDEN ALLIES IN OVERDRIVE TO DISPEL REPORTS HE IS TOO OLD FOR THE JOB<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Democratic \u201cexistential dread\u201d emanates from Trump\u2019s third presidential nomination, according to Hankin, president of Lincoln Park Strategies, a public opinion research firm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m expecting mostly panic from now until the election again,\u201d Hankin told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cIf Biden was up by a couple points in every single state, maybe there would be slightly less existential dread, but 2016 is not that long ago and the memory of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As such, this month\u2019s debate between Biden and Trump will be a crucial moment for the incumbent, Hankin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Biden has a really bad night, then I think panic will sink in,\u201d he added. \u201cEveryone is going to get nervous on the fact that we could have a repeat of 2016 and Trump could be back in office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of national Democrats, their counterparts closer to the ground in battleground states across the country have suggestions for the party and Biden\u2019s campaign before voters cast their ballots.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nevada<\/a>, a state Biden won by only 2 percentage points in 2020, Chris Wicker, the former chairman of Reno\u2019s Washoe County Democrats, declined to use the word \u201cpanic.\u201d But he did convey how members of the party are \u201cconcerned\u201d about the president\u2019s chances, exacerbated by how \u201cthe shock of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>inflation<\/a> lingers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in general don\u2019t care about the causes and don\u2019t know presidents have relatively little impact one way or the other,\u201d Wicker told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cNevertheless, it is a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to see Biden emphasize where we came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>economically<\/a> from January 2021 to the present. He should emphasize the bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/border-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>border<\/a> bill that Trump killed,\u201d he said. \u201cBiden should remind people of the chaos during Trump, the slow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>COVID<\/a> response, the turnover in senior administration positions, and get to the public some of the scary things that his handpicked officials now say after working with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wisconsin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Wisconsin<\/a>, a state Biden must win to retain the Democratic \u201cblue wall\u201d that also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Michigan<\/a> and Pennsylvania, Angela Lang, executive director of the nonprofit organization Black Leaders Organizing for Communities, deployed the descriptor \u201cfrustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a few months left where anything can happen and plenty of time to \u2018course-correct,\u2019 but people are frustrated,\u201d Lang told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cA lot of organizers have been talking about frustrations we\u2019re hearing publicly, and folks are waiting for the campaign to shift based on our comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks always ask, \u2018What has Biden done?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI personally want to see more public events, not just invite only. I also think there\u2019s a messaging problem between the administration\u2019s accomplishments and how they impact people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Wisconsin state Sen. Chris Larson, who represents southeast Wisconsin, including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and voted \u201cuninstructed\u201d in April\u2019s Democratic primary over Biden\u2019s approach to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israel<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Hamas<\/a>, disagreed. The senator contended that \u201cthe older tactics of just showing up are not working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democratic Party isn\u2019t a monolith. It\u2019s divided over lots of little demographic groups,\u201d Larson told the <em>Washington Examiner.<\/em> \u201cNobody speaks for one group entirely and it\u2019s pretty split up. There\u2019s not the same type of singular focus that there was four years ago of being able to fire a terrible president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s attention has shifted to their lives and to other things, and they don\u2019t feel the threat the same way they did four years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cThey need to actually show that they\u2019re listening and not just show up. \u2026 If the election were held today, I don\u2019t know how it would go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Democrat\u00a0with ties to the\u00a0Biden administration who was granted anonymity in order to speak freely along with several others the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>interviewed<em>, <\/em>amplified Lang\u2019s frustration, adding party members were \u201cunhappy\u201d with the president\u2019s decision to seek reelection in the first place. The source implied Biden launched his campaign because of dissatisfaction with Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kamala Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe is basically taking one for the team and saying, \u2018I\u2019m in the fourth quarter of my life. I\u2019m going to run again, even though I didn\u2019t want to, because she can\u2019t do it,\u2019\u201d the Democrat told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cShe\u2019s not qualified for that job.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Charlie Comfort, an at-large member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iowa\/\">Iowa<\/a>\u2018s Oskaloosa City Council and vice president of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>school board<\/a> in the state\u2019s southeast, interpreted \u201cpanic\u201d as \u201curgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a sense of urgency that something needs to change strategy-wise and fast or November could be a blowout,\u201d Comfort told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cI would also stop assuming that America will come home to the president in the fall because of the indictments and ethical questions of the former president. People in my area are desensitized to all of that now because of how much it\u2019s been in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>media<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA simple acknowledgment that the race is tight would go a long ways to getting people to realize they need to vote no matter how much we are disgusted with the two legitimate options,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve had a number of people I know on both sides of the aisle shock me by telling me they are seriously considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>RFK Jr.<\/a>, who I believe already has the signatures needed for ballot access in Iowa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as this week\u2019s disputed <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>report about Biden\u2019s performance in private meetings reiterates public concerns about his age, Democratic strategist Matt Angle urged his colleagues to \u201cget a grip on themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump is a convicted felon who has destroyed any semblance of a normal Republican Party and turned it into a force to dismantle our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>democracy<\/a> and turn it into a corrupt autocracy,\u201d the founder and director of research and communications shop, the Lone Star Project, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cEvery ounce of energy should be spent on electing Democrats and overcoming whatever perceived weaknesses there are in any of our candidates from President Biden down.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a toxic combination of arrogance, self-indulgence, and naivete to complain about Biden five months before the election when fundamental liberties and American democracy itself are in such grave danger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, retiring Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) implored Biden and his campaign not to panic because \u201cpanicked candidates lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever a good time to panic in a campaign,\u201d Kildee told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve got work to do. But no aspect of [that] work includes people setting their hair on fire. I think it\u2019s actually counterproductive because it just doesn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same people who are panicking now are the people who were panicking in 2020,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is a little bit of Chicken Little, kinda the sky is falling mentality. It\u2019s an issue with a lot of Democratic activists, honestly, that everything is always falling apart. But you know what? We seem to be able to win elections. I\u2019ve been through so many of them, I don\u2019t find the utility in that kind of reaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former House Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/steny-hoyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Steny Hoyer <\/a>(D-MD) was also confident Biden could contrast himself with Trump because the former president is someone \u201cwho doesn\u2019t respect anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Biden\u2019s] got a heck of a message, and then, yeah, maybe I do have faith in the American people that they will ultimately decide Trump is unqualified by any kind of measure to be president of the United States, including devotion to country and Constitution, which he does not have. He has devotion to Donald Trump,\u201d Hoyer told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe [in] the American people and their wise judgment in 2020,\u201d he said. \u201cThey knew who he was. And he\u2019s gotten worse. And I think the American people care enough about their country not to put somebody like Donald Trump in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats agreed, one strategist asserting Biden\u2019s poll numbers were similar to former President Barack Obama\u2019s before his own reelection campaign in 2012. Another argued, \u201cThere\u2019s no more panic in this cycle than there was in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden and his entire campaign have been working since day one to connect with different demographics early and to keep that contact throughout the race,\u201d a third Democrat told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cJust because the campaign is doing everything they can to reach voters doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re panicking.
