The New York Times reports that \u201cfewer than 200 veterans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utterly-breathtaking-yahoo-news-reporter-compares-covering-trump-to-fighting-d-day\/\" title=\"\u2018Utterly Breathtaking\u2019: Yahoo News Reporter Compares Covering Trump To Fighting D-Day\">allied invasion<\/a> of Normandy, which marked a turning point in World War II, are still alive and sound enough to attend this year\u2019s D-Day reunion in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the words of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose team had been planning the mobilization for over a year, \u201cThese men came \u2026 to storm these beaches for one purpose only, not to gain anything for ourselves, not to fulfill any ambitions America had for conquest, but to preserve freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-962659158\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bf999f797616177b8ea6a9163908a066 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bf999f797616177b8ea6a9163908a066\"><\/div>\n<p>Eisenhower knew the importance and difficulty of the task ahead. If the mission failed, it would set back Allied efforts to defeat Nazi Germany for at least a year, resulting in the inhumane extermination of millions of more Jews and the deaths of countless thousands of soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>As Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt believed, the D-Day invasion was essential if freedom were to flourish and Christian civilization \u2014 rooted in the inherent respect for and dignity of all humankind \u2014 were to be saved.<\/p>\n<p>That is why in the wee hours before the launch of the invasion, Eisenhower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/education\/lessons\/d-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a><em> <\/em>the courageous soldiers they were about to \u201cembark upon the Great Crusade\u201d and the \u201ceyes of the world are upon you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then concluded, \u201cLet us all beseech blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ce4e4303c71e21a34d9018936a1e41ce fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ce4e4303c71e21a34d9018936a1e41ce\"><\/div>\n<p>The fighting was fierce indeed. More than 4,400 Allied soldiers of the 156,000 deployed from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada would lose their lives. Another 10,200 were injured, including 6,600 Americans. Those who fought later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jun\/02\/dday-veterans-normandy-75th-anniversary-second-world-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the waters of Normandy turned red from all the blood spilled.<\/p>\n<p>Forty years later, at the 40th\u00a0anniversary of D-Day, President Ronald Reagan gave a touching tribute to those men who stormed the Normandy beaches, in particular the most treacherous, Pointe du Hoc, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or on the next. It was the deep knowledge \u2014 and pray God we have not lost it \u2014 that there is a profound, moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest. You were here to liberate, not to conquer, and so you and those others did not doubt your cause. And you were right not to doubt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You all knew that some things are worth dying for. One\u2019s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it\u2019s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the people of your countries were behind you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yet, despite the importance of this mission, its memory fades with each passing generation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0d9dce3d2bde11fb86d623b924a7e769 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0d9dce3d2bde11fb86d623b924a7e769\"><\/div>\n<p>President Reagan warned us about this in his 1989 farewell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reaganlibrary.gov\/archives\/speech\/farewell-address-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">address<\/a><em> <\/em>to the nation:<em> \u201c<\/em>You know, four years ago, on the 40th\u00a0anniversary of D-Day, I read a letter from a young woman writing to her late father, who\u2019d fought on Omaha Beach. Her name was Lisa Zanatta Hehn, and she said, \u2018We will always remember, we will never forget, what the boys at Normandy did.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWell, let\u2019s help her keep her word. If we forget what we did, we won\u2019t know who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But unfortunately, we are not keeping our word. For instance, one <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/uncategorized\/409656-poll-1-in-3-americans-can-pass-citizenship-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a><em> <\/em>found that 12 percent of Americans thought Dwight Eisenhower fought in the Civil War (which ended 25 years before he was born), instead of leading the D-Day invasion! Perhaps even worse, another <a href=\"https:\/\/swnsdigital.com\/us\/2020\/05\/memorial-day-fail-less-than-half-of-americans-know-reason-for-the-us-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a> found that only 43 percent of Americans know the real reason we celebrate Memorial Day. These sad statistics are just another example of how neglecting to teach American history in our schools has taken a toll on our national memory.<\/p>\n<p>This is tragic. Perhaps it is our time for us, as parents, to do what else President Reagan encouraged us to do in his farewell address: \u201cAn informed patriotism is what we want. And are we doing a good enough job teaching our children what America is and what she represents in the long history of the world? All great change happens in America at the dinner table. So,\u00a0tomorrow night\u00a0in the kitchen I hope the talking begins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is why I wrote my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithfultext.com\/toward-a-more-perfect-union-products-9781956454130.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book<\/a>, <em>Toward a Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American\u00a0Story<\/em>, to equip parents to do this, so our children and their children will never forget the bravery of the men who stormed the beaches and climbed the cliffs of Pointe-du-Hoc to preserve freedom. If we do not teach this, the freedom they fought so valiantly for will become a forgotten memory.
