Warden Randall Hepp and three staff face\u2064 misconduct charges. Dodge County Sheriff\u2063 Dale Schmidt confirmed the charges, stating all \u2063eight face allegations of inmate abuse. The prison&#8217;s handling of incidents, including suicides and \u2062delayed responses to medical emergencies, raised concerns.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_79\">\n<p>The warden and eight staff members of a maximum-security prison in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wisconsin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Wisconsin<\/a> were charged Wednesday following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>deaths of four inmates<\/a> over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Randall Hepp, the warden of Waupun Correctional Institution, and three of the staff members were charged with misconduct in public office, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news8000.com\/news\/crime\/wisconsin-warden-and-eight-staff-members-charged-following-probes-into-inmate-deaths\/article_1b5ca675-a299-5a0c-a7b5-cb66be7add71.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt. (AP Photo\/Morry Gash)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe are operating the oldest prison in the state of Wisconsin in a dangerous and reckless manner,\u201d Schmidt said at a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Hoffman, a Waupun inmate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2023\/09\/28\/a-man-died-by-suicide-during-the-waupun-prison-lockdown-his-family-wants-answers\/70896455007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>died<\/a> by suicide in June 2023 after spending nine days in solitary confinement. His daughter filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/daughter-of-wisconsin-inmate-who-committed-suicide-files-federal-lawsuit-against-prison-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>federal lawsuit<\/a> alleging that prison officials did not provide him with sufficient medications and mental healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Tyshun Lemons died in prison after overdosing on fentanyl and Cameron Williams died of a stroke. (AP Photo\/Morry Gash)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The death of the fourth inmate, Donald Maier, in February was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/inmate-deaths-wisconsin-waupun-prison-warden-staffers-charged\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ruled<\/a> a homicide due to malnutrition and water deprivation, according to Schmidt. <\/p>\n<p>The charges against Hepp and the eight staff members <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/waupun-correctional-warden-jail-death-investigations-0dac676c75541eb7f2c731e13c085752#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>concern<\/a> the deaths of Williams and Maier. If convicted, Hepp, who announced his retirement last week, could <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/waupun-correctional-warden-jail-death-investigations-0dac676c75541eb7f2c731e13c085752#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>face<\/a> up to 3 1\/2 years in prison. <\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Department of Corrections is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/inmate-deaths-wisconsin-waupun-prison-warden-staffers-charged\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>investigating<\/a> the prison\u2019s operations, and three of the inmate deaths are subject to federal lawsuits.
