A \u2062Wall Street Journal \u2062article sparked praise from\u200c Republicans and criticism\u200b from\u2064 Biden&#8217;s camp, \u2063highlighting age and\u200c mental fitness as significant concerns for the GOP in the 2024 election. The Democrats quickly supported President Joe Biden,\u200b refuting allegations \u200cof\u200c declining cognitive abilities \u2064and age affecting his presidency. \u200cA \u200bWall\u2064 Street Journal article received applause\u200d from Republicans but \u200bfaced backlash from\u200d Biden&#8217;s supporters,\u2064 emphasizing age and mental acuity as key issues\u2063 for the GOP in the \u20642024\u200c election.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Congressional Democrats<\/a> have been quick to condemn recent reports that President <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a>\u2019s cognitive abilities are in decline, dismissing claims that he is too old to hold the presidency by testifying to their first-hand experiences where he is \u201con top of his game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/joe-biden-age-election-2024-8ee15246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>article<\/a> published on Wednesday quickly gained praise from <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republicans<\/a> and criticism from Bidenworld after it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-office-refutes-claim-he-is-feuding-with-trump-over-florida-rally\/\" title=\"DeSantis\u2019 Office Refutes Claim He Is Feuding With Trump Over Florida Rally\">quoted anonymous sources<\/a> saying the president\u2019s cognitive abilities are declining. The president\u2019s age and mental fitness are flashpoints for the GOP and significant campaign roadblocks for Biden as he works to convince voters he is viable to serve another term after the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024 election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At 81, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history. Though Democrats do not deny that he is elderly, they believe Biden\u2019s record and their in-person conversations with him prove he is still fit for the job.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is not a young candidate either. At 77, Trump would be 82 at the end of a second term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no doubt that his movements are slower than they were when he was 40,\u201d Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said of Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s actions are more incoherent and chaotic,\u201d Hoyer continued. \u201cI\u2019d rather have a little slower, a little more rational, and a little more reasonable, a little more committed to civility and our Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Rep. (AP Photo\/Alex Brandon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy view on that is, I\u2019m going to be 85 on June 14, which happens to be Trump\u2019s birthday also, ironically, and I joke, I said, you know, I\u2019m a little concerned about the president\u2019s age,\u201d Hoyer joked. \u201cI think he\u2019s a little young to run for president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), the youngest member of Congress, said it is not lost on Democrats that the party\u2019s prospective presidential nominee is getting up there in years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he old? Yes, Joe Biden is an old man. Period,\u201d Frost said. \u201cWe know and like, let\u2019s, you know, let\u2019s move on. Donald Trump is just a few years younger \u2014 they could have been in the same high school together at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) echoed Frost, calling the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> article a \u201ctransparent effort to change the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re trying to change the subject by going back to some old tired stuff about Joe Biden\u2019s age. You know, as if those guys weren\u2019t in the same age bracket anyway,\u201d Raskin said, referring to the president and Trump.<\/p>\n<p>A recent ABC News-Ipsos poll found <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/poll-americans-on-biden-age\/story?id=107126589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>86% of voters <\/a>across all political spectrums believe Biden is too old. However, Frost said age does not appear to be the No. 1 priority when he\u2019s meeting with voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been on the road on the campaign trail, especially with young voters. If they have a criticism of the president, it\u2019s not age,\u201d Frost said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are thinking about policy and stuff,\u201d the Florida congressman said. \u201cSo I don\u2019t think we give the voters enough credit when we say, you know, his age is going to be a determining factor. I really don\u2019t think it will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Democrats say they were left out of <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>article<\/h2>\n<p>The White House did not respond to the <em>Washington Examiner\u2019s<\/em> request for comment but White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates has spent most of Wednesday reposting tweets disparaging the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u2019s story on social media. <\/p>\n<p>Some Democrats also blasted the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> on social media for allegedly keeping Democratic voices out of the article. Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) said in a post to X that while she went on record praising Biden, her comments were left out of the published story. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurprise, surprise\u2014everyone attacking @POTUS is a Republican with an agenda,\u201d Murray <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PattyMurray\/status\/1798181164349358572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a>. \u201cI made clear to the @WSJ regarding the January meeting on Ukraine that the President was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/msnbcs-scarborough-joins-dems-defending-biden-after-report-on-president-mentally-slipping\/\" title=\"MSNBC's Scarborough Stands with Democrats in Support of Biden Amid Mental Health Concerns\">absolutely engaged &#038; ran<\/a> that meeting in a way that brought everyone together. I\u2019m not quoted\u2014I wonder why.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Rep. Scott Applewhite)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) also recounted her time spent with the outlet, arguing it chose to \u201cignore\u201d her comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of us spent time with @WSJ to share on the record our first-hand experiences with @POTUS, where we see his wisdom, experience, strength and strategic thinking,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cInstead, the Journal ignored testimony by Democrats, focused on attacks by Republicans and printed a hit piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Democrats were adamant in conversations with the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that any reports about Biden\u2019s mental capabilities were simply Republican attempts to distract from Trump being found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s simply not true. I talked with the president. I\u2019m in meetings with the president. I\u2019m there when the President talks to workers in Massachusetts. He\u2019s sharp, he\u2019s on top of his game, and he\u2019s ready to go,\u201d Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), a top Biden campaign surrogate, said. \u201cThe Republicans are hoping that they can keep this fiction alive. That has no basis in fact, but frankly, they got nothing else to run on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re backing a convicted felon who says he wants to be dictator on day one,\u201d Warren taunted. \u201cSo they\u2019re hoping they can change the subject by making something up about Joe Biden. That\u2019s just not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) called the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> report \u201ca Fox News trope\u201d when asked for comment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve obviously worked very closely and very directly with President Biden on everything from immigration to guns to foreign policy, and I\u2019ve watched President Biden run circles around senators inside the Oval Office,\u201d Murphy continued. <\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Murphy described working with Trump as a \u201cnightmare.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>President Joe Biden gestures upon his arrival at Orly airport, south of Paris, Wednesday June 5, 2024. Chris Coons (D-DE), a close Biden ally on Capitol Hill, described the president as \u201csharp, engaged, masterful\u201d while questioning the motives of anonymous sources trashing Biden in the media. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important for viewers or readers to reflect on the motives of the folks who are quoted on the record, saying things that are less complimentary,\u201d Coons said. \u201cThis is a divided and partisan time, and the campaign is in full cycle.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Vulnerable Democrats such as Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) declined to address concerns about Biden\u2019s age but claimed she was \u201cdelighted\u201d to campaign with the president when he visited her state. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was delighted, for example, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baldwin.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/news-senator-baldwin-delivers-over-1-billion-to-replace-the-blatnik-bridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>join him in Superior, Wisconsin<\/a>, where he announced a billion dollars in infrastructure spending to help rebuild an aging bridge called the Blatnik Bridge that connects Superior with Duluth and will welcome him, especially around such announcements,\u201d Baldwin said. <\/p>\n<h2>GOP demands Biden interview tape to show \u2018mental capacity\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Republicans have long hammered Biden as too mentally incapacitated to serve in the White House another term. The Republican National Committee\u2019s social media accounts repeatedly highlight Biden\u2019s public confusion, missteps, and other blunders. They\u2019ve also pounced on polls showing Biden\u2019s approval numbers declining among the American public. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking for years now; we\u2019ve seen his cognitive decline,\u201d Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) said. \u201cI mean, he\u2019s cooked. His brain\u2019s cooked.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Rep. (AP Photo\/Ted Shaffrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A recent House GOP target has been the audio recording from special counsel Robert Hur\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-insists-biden-can-juggle-israel-and-classified-documents-interview\/\" title=\"White House affirms Biden's ability to handle Israel and classified documents interview simultaneously.\">classified documents interview<\/a> with Biden. Many Republicans have argued they need that audio recording to assess Biden\u2019s capabilities in a way that a transcript, which has been provided, cannot. Democrats have blasted their efforts as a GOP scheme to use the audio for campaign videos.  <\/p>\n<p>However, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) said Biden\u2019s ability to govern has been \u201cquestioned for years now\u201d and American voters deserve to hear the audio recording to judge for themselves whether Biden is fit for office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the president of the United States does not have the mental capacity to do his job, why in the world would people give him four more years? I think this is a critical, critical piece of information that the American people need,\u201d Donalds told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the blunders, slipups, and recent articles, Democrats have mostly sought to defend Biden in public. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said Biden has not lost a step in his abilities. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see any evidence at all. Just the opposite is true.
