She was actively pursuing fitness\u2064 but struggled with\u2063 dietary choices in a culture promoting unhealthy eating habits, resonating with many facing similar challenges.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An autopsy report for the Grammy-Award-winning gospel singer Mandisa Lynn Hundley revealed the former \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d star died from complications of severe obesity.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, People magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/mandisa-cause-of-death-revealed-8636433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> Mandisa died in April at just 47 years old after struggling with class III obesity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe report said the star was found dead in her home by friends on April 18, and that she \u2018was last known alive approximately three weeks\u2019 earlier,\u201d read the magazine. \u201cHer manner of death is listed as natural.\u201d But should wealthy developed nations such as the United States accept death from a preventable condition as \u201cnatural?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Cleveland Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21989-class-iii-obesity-formerly-known-as-morbid-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">characterizes<\/a> class III obesity, formerly designated \u201cmorbid obesity,\u201d as an individual who \u201chas a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher and is experiencing obesity-related health conditions.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/life-expectancy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-irreversible-consequences-of-school-closures\/\" title=\"The Irreversible Consequences of School Closures\">life expectancy<\/a> for women in the United States is more than 80 years. In other words, Mandisa died more than 30 years younger than she otherwise might have had she not suffered from severe obesity.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean Mandisa died from personal neglect? No. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FUztRiDJIn4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-professed<\/a> Zumba fan, the five-time Grammy nominee was certainly active but most likely followed bad nutrition guidelines having grown up in the era of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ramaswamy-won-the-debate-about-health-care-no-one-else-is-willing-to-tackle\/\" title=\"Ramaswamy triumphs in tackling neglected health care debate\">low-fat diet craze<\/a>. Fat storage is determined by complex interactions between hormones and enzymes that have far more to do with diet than exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of other Americans now living with obesity and chronic disease can relate to Mandisa after spending decades replacing dietary fat with high-carb junk food <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/05\/junk-science-health-experts-gaslight-americans-on-the-definition-of-ultra-processed-foods\/\">promote<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/05\/junk-science-health-experts-gaslight-americans-on-the-definition-of-ultra-processed-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">d<\/a> to the public as \u201chealthy.\u201d The collective empathy helped propel the \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d contestant to new heights when the show\u2019s primary judge, Simon Cowell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-4w9osiCiWA\">mocked<\/a> the Tennessee singer\u2019s weight at her 2005 audition. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould we have a bigger stage this year?\u201d he asked after Mandisa left the room. When Paula Abdul compared Mandisa to Frenchie Davis, Cowell said a better comparison was \u201cFrance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cowell\u2019s weight-based comments drew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/popculture\/simon-crossing-line-idol-wbna11147688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticism<\/a> from the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), and in 2008 Mandisa <a href=\"http:\/\/christianwomenonline.net\/2008\/10\/29\/my-interview-with-%E2%80%9Camerican-idol%E2%80%9D-finalist-mandisa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the remarks were the impetus for the name of her first studio album, \u201cTrue Beauty,\u201d in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Mandisa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-dj3kumSLmE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confronted<\/a> Cowell\u2019s comments on television before the show dwindled down to two dozen contestants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hurt me and I cried, but I want you to know that I\u2019ve forgiven you,\u201d she said. Cowell said he was \u201chumbled\u201d by the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Even more humbling, however, is the tragic nature of extreme obesity itself. <\/p>\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/humans-could-live-up-to-150-years-new-research-suggests\/\">research<\/a> suggests the natural limit to human lifespan could reach 150. But the American lifespan seems to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1040079\/life-expectancy-united-states-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plateaued<\/a> in the upper 70s while our <em>healthspan,<\/em> in reference to our age in good health absent chronic disease, seems to be declining. Six in 10 U.S. adults <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2023\/23_0120.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have<\/a> at least one chronic illness, while 4 in 10 have two or more as chronic conditions account for 90 percent of the $4.5 trillion in American health care expenditures every year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronic-disease\/data-research\/facts-stats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according <\/a>to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 42 percent of Americans are categorically obese, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/obesity-overweight.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the CDC. Risks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/basics\/consequences.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">associated<\/a> with obesity include breathing problems, cancers, myriad chronic diseases, and early death. It\u2019s far from an exaggeration to suspect American life expectancy would be much higher if the nation kept its weight in check, as\u00a0Big Food and Big Pharma collude to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/19\/oprahs-abc-weight-loss-special-was-an-hour-long-infomercial-for-big-pharma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enable<\/a> the lifestyle habits that are making our neighbors sick in the first place.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
