Dwight Eisenhower issued his \u201cOrder of the Day\u201d to the troops participating in Operation Overlord, the beginning of the liberation of western Europe from Nazi rule.<\/p>\n<p>In that order 80 years ago, the general exhorted all those serving under his command to pray for the success of the operation, which was to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov\/research\/online-documents\/world-war-ii-d-day-invasion-normandy#:~:text=The%20D%2DDay%20operation%20of,the%20beaches%20of%20Normandy%2C%20France.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest amphibious invasion<\/a> ever undertaken in the history of warfare.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/d-day-75-years-ago-american-heroes-helped-liberate-suffering-humanity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">battle<\/a> \u2014 which occurred on a 50-mile stretch of shoreline in Normandy, France \u2014 came nearly five years after German dictator Adolf Hitler plunged the world into war when his Nazi forces invaded and occupied much of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>By the summer of 1940, Great Britain, under the leadership of Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/churchill-fdr-said-fight-hitler-preservation-christian-civilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winston Churchill<\/a>, remained the lone outpost of freedom resisting the German war machine.<\/p>\n<p>In his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/winstonchurchill.org\/resources\/speeches\/1940-the-finest-hour\/their-finest-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finest Hour<\/a>\u201d speech, given shortly after taking office, Churchill said, \u201cUpon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can stand up to [Hitler], all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britain stood firm in the air battle over Britain in 1940, thwarting Hitler\u2019s attempt to occupy the island nation, so the German leader turned his forces back toward the east and invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941.<\/p>\n<p>Then Germany\u2019s ally Japan bombed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gary-sinise-met-wheelchair-bound-pearl-harbor-survivor-nobody-expected-seven-words-vet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pearl Harbor<\/a> on December 7, 1941, and four days later Hitler declared war on the United States.<\/p>\n<p>By June 1944, the Allies \u2014 the U.S., Britain, and Canada \u2014 stood poised to begin the liberation of western Europe.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should more American leaders pray openly?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Allies had amassed 5,000 ships, 20,000 vehicles (including more than 1,000 tanks), more than 175,000 soldiers, and 10,000-plus aircraft for Operation Overlord, primarily in and around the British isles.<\/p>\n<p>The D-Day plan involved crossing the English Channel and making landings on five Normandy beach sites, as well as dropping paratroopers from the 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions behind enemy lines.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Map of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Normandy?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Normandy<\/a> invasion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/4-american-presidents-who-took-assassination-attempts-like-champs\/\" title=\"4 American Presidents Who Took Assassination Attempts Like Champs\">allied forces<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DVbhkikKUE\">https:\/\/t.co\/DVbhkikKUE<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OperationOverload?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OperationOverload<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Memory_Project?\">@Memory_Project<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x1MIB4YjjP\">pic.twitter.com\/x1MIB4YjjP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CanadianEncyclopedia (@CdnEncyclopedia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CdnEncyclopedia\/status\/664491905263214592?\">November 11, 2015<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the evening of June 5, Eisenhower, a former West Point football player and assistant coach, went to give a pep talk to some of the soldiers from the 101st Airborne before they loaded their planes bound for Normandy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We commemorate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DDay80?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DDay80<\/a> and the tremendous sacrifices made by all WWII veterans in battle on and off the field. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/coi0DBiyA1\">pic.twitter.com\/coi0DBiyA1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 West Point AOG (@WPAOG) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WPAOG\/status\/1004343398977896448?\">June 6, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German War Machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Eisenhower said their task would not be easy because the Germans would \u201cfight savagely,\u201d but reminded his troops that the Nazi forces had suffered great defeats at the hands of the Allies, particularly dealt by the Soviet Union on the eastern front of the war, over the previous years.<\/p>\n<p>Eisenhower also described how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-fired-cruise-missiles-at-ukraine-from-russian-airspace-pentagon-confirms\/\" title=\"Russia Fired Cruise Missiles At Ukraine From Russian Airspace, Pentagon Confirms\">air offensive<\/a> against Hitler\u2019s regime, conducted by the British, Americans and Canadians, over the previous years had \u201cseriously reduced\u201d the German capacity \u201cto wage war on the ground.\u201d The Allies enjoyed complete air supremacy by D-Day.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">General Dwight D. And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking,\u201d Eisenhower concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Following the successful landing on Normandy\u2019s coast, President Franklin D. Roosevelt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fdrs-powerful-d-day-prayer-80-years-ago-recalls-christian-faith-steeled-us-wwii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led<\/a> the American people on the evening of June 6 in what has been described as the largest mass prayer in human history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity,\u201d the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/prayer-d-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began<\/a>, as an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/d-day-78-years-fdr-prayer-united-americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 million people<\/a> tuned in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest \u2014 until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men\u2019s souls will be shaken with the violences of war,\u201d Roosevelt continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome will never return.
