McGuire. Good&#8217;s recovery led him to a 39%-30% lead in \u200da \u200dnew \u2064survey. Trump&#8217;s \u200blegal challenges \u2063impacted the race, \u200cfavoring Good. Conservatives in the district have rallied behind Good, known for his tough stance on issues like \u2062illegal immigration. Bob Good<\/a> (R-VA), chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2955484\/why-a-republican-rebel-leader-is-changing-his-tune-on-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Freedom Caucus,<\/a> appears to be weathering criticism from former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> and ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s endorsement last week of Virginia commonwealth <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/news\/local\/q-a-abc13s-mark-spain-interviews-5th-district-republican-candidate-john-mcguire-virginia-may-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Sen. John McGuire<\/a> initially knocked Good down in polls. Good has since scrambled back to lead 39%-30% in a new survey from Neighborhood Research and Media for Champions of Freedom PAC.<\/p>\n<p>Republican pollster Rick Shaftan told <em>Secrets<\/em> that Trump\u2019s endorsement on May 28 initially affected the race and put McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, near the lead. But the former president\u2019s conviction on 34 counts in a New York hush money trial \u201ctook the wind out of the sail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elon-musk-i-got-a-covid-test-four-times-in-one-day-two-came-back-negative-two-came-back-positive-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Elon Musk: I Got A COVID Test Four Times In One Day. \u2018Two Came Back Negative, Two Came Back Positive.\u2019 | The Daily Wire\">conservatives<\/a>, especially right-leaning men in the district that stretches from Charlottesville and the Richmond suburbs south to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/North-Carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>North Carolina<\/a> border, have rallied for Good, a hard-liner on several issues, especially illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>In his memo shared with <em>Secrets<\/em>, Shaftan wrote, \u201cAfter taking a hit Thursday last week, Good began to recover as soon as the Trump verdict came down, with a 39%-30% lead over the three days. But that includes Friday numbers when Good was up just 35-32 versus the calls from Monday and Tuesday where Good\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-michigan-poll-shows-biden-losing-in-blowout\/\" title=\"Biden's Defeat in Michigan Poll is Overwhelming\">lead expanded<\/a> to 41%-28%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memo added, \u201cVery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/conservative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>conservative<\/a> voters are also becoming a larger share of the electorate and this is excellent news for Bob Good. Sixty-three percent of likely voters consider themselves very conservative and Good holds a 47%-30% lead there including 49%-26% in the calls from\u00a0Monday and Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Virginia\u2019s 5th District has been reliably Republican and Good has won since 2020 by healthy margins. This year he got in a tangle after he helped to oust McCarthy, who then sought out a primary challenger. He also endorsed Florida Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Ron-DeSantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ron DeSantis<\/a> for president.<\/p>\n<p>In his endorsement of McGuire, Trump called Good \u201cbad\u201d for Virginia and America. Trump also demanded that Good stop suggesting that he backs the House Republican. Good, meanwhile, has since endorsed Trump and even showed up to support Trump in the New York courthouse where the former president was later convicted.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEE THE LATEST POLITICAL NEWS AND BUZZ FROM WASHINGTON SECRETS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Others have come to Good\u2019s defense, including notable conservatives Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Rand-Paul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Rand Paul<\/a> (R-KY) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).<\/p>\n<p>With the GOP primary set for June 18, Shaftan indicated that Good is well positioned. \u201cOverall it seems as if Good has stabilized and is getting a little stronger while McGuire\u2019s favorables are crashing as the Trump endorsement fades into the background.
