The exchange, particularly\u200d with GOP Rep. \u200bMatt Gaetz, revolved \u2062around the DOJ&#8217;s relationship with\u2062 various prosecution offices that have pursued Trump.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Merrick Garland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-ag-barr-authorizes-federal-prosecutors-to-pursue-substantial-allegations-of-voting-irregularities-before-2020-election-is-certified\/\" title=\"BREAKING: AG Barr Authorizes Federal Prosecutors to Pursue \"Substantial Allegations\" of Voting Irregularities Before 2020 Election is Certified\">attorney general<\/a> at the Department of Justice, would not commit to providing lawmakers with any and all communications between his department and prosecutors\u2019 offices that have pursued cases against former president Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Tuesday, Garland visited Capitol Hill to testify as part of an oversight hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee. GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida grilled the attorney general on his department\u2019s relationship with a variety of local prosecutors\u2019 offices that have either sued or charged Trump in recent months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of those cases resulted in an unprecedented ruling last week. A New York City jury sided with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, finding Trump guilty of 34 felony counts, the first time in American history a current or former U.S. president has been found guilty of a crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naming Bragg\u2019s office alongside that of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and New York Attorney General Letitia James in New York, Gaetz asked Garland if he would commit to \u201cprovide to the committee all documents, all correspondence between the department and\u201d the local and state prosecutors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pressed repeatedly, Garland responded that the DOJ does \u201cnot control those offices. They make their own decisions.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you make a request, we will refer it to our office of legislative affairs. Garland said he had no knowledge of why Colangelo joined Bragg\u2019s team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI did not dispatch Mr. Colangelo anywhere,\u201d Garland answered to accusations from Gaetz. \u201cI assume he applied for a job there and got the job. I tell you I had nothing to do with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before joining Biden\u2019s DOJ, Colangelo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/06\/us-news\/trump-hush-money-prosecutor-matthew-colenagelo-was-political-consultant-for-dnc-ex-obama-donor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">worked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for a stint in Democratic Party circles, earning $12,000 from the Democratic National Committee in January 2018 for \u201cpolitical consulting.\u201d Colangelo later joined the DOJ as one of Garland\u2019s top deputies before joining Bragg\u2019s office as the senior counsel in the criminal case against Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a Capitol Hill hearing, Attorney General Merrick Garland refrained from assuring lawmakers about disclosing all communications between the Department of Justice and prosecutors handling cases involving ex-President Donald Trump.
