The Act seeks to formalize federal protections \u200bfor birth control, \u200dresponding to recent women&#8217;s reproductive \u200dhealth\u200d court decisions post the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The petition, led by \u200bDemocratic Whip Katherine Clark and Rep. Kathy Manning, calls for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-democrats-push-reformed-voting-rights-laws\/\" title=\"Biden administration, Democrats push reformed voting rights laws\">bipartisan support<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Democrats<\/a> are opening a discharge petition for the Right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/contraception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Contraception<\/a> Act just one day before the Senate is set to vote on the measure in an effort to force GOP leaders to bring the legislation to the floor for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>The Right to Contraception Act, which would codify federal protections for birth control, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-signs-florida-transportation-bill-with-provision-aimed-at-disneys-monorail\/\" title=\"DeSantis signs Florida transportation bill targeting Disney's monorail.\">latest legislative action<\/a> taken by Democrats in the wake of recent women\u2019s reproductive health court decisions and the looming two-year anniversary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/supreme-court.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Supreme Court<\/a> overturning <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Roe v. Wade<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Rep. Kathy Manning (D-NC) announced the petition on Tuesday during a press conference with several female House Democrats, as well as House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar\u00a0(D-CA) and other members.<\/p>\n<p>Clark, along with Manning and other members present, urged Republicans to reject the small \u201cextremist\u201d faction of their party\u2019s base and join the petition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublicans have a choice to make: They can put aside their MAGA ideology and join us, join the American people, and get this bill passed,\u201d Clark said, \u201cor they can triple down on their anti-freedom extremism in full view of the American people. The country is watching, and their constituents will remember where they stood when it mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is set to vote on the Right to Contraception Act on Wednesday, but the legislation is unlikely to garner the support of at least nine Republicans needed to clear the chamber\u2019s 60-vote threshold. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has backed the bill.<\/p>\n<p>To bring legislation to the floor under a discharge petition, House Democrats would need 218 signatures. Currently, the Right to Contraception Act has over 200 co-sponsors who are all Democrats. Introduced by Manning last Congress, it passed the House and was received in the Senate in July 2022. Manning reintroduced the legislation on June 14, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my colleagues said \u2014 last term, when we had the debate on this bill \u2014 you get to know people pretty well in this Congress,\u201d Manning said. \u201cShe said, \u2018Nobody on the other side has 15 children. So somebody is using birth control on the other side.\u2019 Let\u2019s have them vote the way they\u2019re conducting themselves in their house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent rulings in Alabama over in vitro fertilization and in Arizona over a decades-old abortion law have created<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2867944\/how-alabama-ivf-ruling-cause-political-chaos-for-gop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> political headaches<\/a> for Republicans in the wake of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> being overturned. Democrats have since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3026084\/democrats-offensive-against-republican-ivf-initiative-new-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attacked Republicans <\/a>in Congress for being anti-IVF and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-blue-state-claw-back\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Blue State Claw Back\">anti-abortion<\/a>, comments that many GOP lawmakers have pushed back against and spurned legislative action in both chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans had been warned about the risk they take holding anti-IVF and anti-contraception positions long before the Alabama court ruling. The Gallup poll\u2019s annual values and beliefs <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/4683027-birth-control-political-battleground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> released in 2023 found that 88% of people said birth control was \u201cmorally acceptable,\u201d a 4% decrease from 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirth control is something that I guarantee you just about every American has or will use sometime in their lifetimes for all the variety of reasons we\u2019ve heard about,\u201d Rep.
