Matt Gaetz took on Attorney General Merrick Garland in a blistering round of questioning before the House Judiciary Committee, Judge Juan Merchan might as well have been in the room himself.<\/p>\n<p>And it would not have looked good.<\/p>\n<p>Merchan\u2019s handling of the Trump trial \u2014 with its Kafkaesque guilty verdict on Thursday \u2014 became a focal point of Gaetz\u2019s line of questioning.<\/p>\n<p>The judge himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-juan-merchan-hit-official-ethics-complaint-accused-judicial-misconduct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infamously donated<\/a> to now-President Joe Biden\u2019s election campaign in 2020 \u2014 in violation of New York <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.nycourts.gov\/rules\/chiefadmin\/100.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">judicial ethics rules<\/a>, which expressly prohibit judges from \u201csoliciting funds for, paying an assessment to, or making a contribution to a political organization or candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the judge\u2019s daughter runs a Democratic political consulting firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-judge-refuses-demand-step-aside-dismisses-accusations-bias-donations-democrats-exposed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that has made money<\/a> working for some of the most viciously anti-Trump Democrats in the land, including, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/who-loren-merchan-juan-merchan-daughter-donald-trump-judge-1884557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>, Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019, House Minority Leader and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hakeem-jeffries-goes-off-deep-end-mike-johnson-elected-speaker-compares-jan-6-pearl-harbor-9-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certifiable Democratic lunatic<\/a> Hakeem Jefferies, and California Gov. and presidential wannabe Gavin Newsom.<\/p>\n<p>Check out Gaetz\u2019s grilling of the attorney general below. The whole thing is well worth watching, but the exchange about Merchan\u2019s obvious conflicts of interest starts about the 1:25 mark.<\/p>\n<p>(Note: The \u201cPomeranz\u201d book Gaetz refers to is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/People-vs-Donald-Trump\/Mark-Pomerantz\/9781668022443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People vs. Donald Trump: An Inside Account<\/a>,\u201d a 2023 work that, as <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6254762\/mark-pomerantz-book-trump-prosecutor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time magazine put it<\/a>, approvingly, \u201clikens Trump to John Gotti, a former mob boss who used every trick to avoid culpability and maintain one degree of deniability while building a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/over-700-survivors-advocates-call-on-congress-for-criminal-investigation-into-pornhubs-parent-company\/\" title=\"Over 700 Survivors, Advocates Call On Congress For Criminal Investigation Into Pornhub\u2019s Parent Company\">massive criminal enterprise<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n<blockquote data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Matt Gaetz faces off against Merrick Garland:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou come in here and you lodge this attack that it\u2019s a conspiracy theory that there\u2019s coordinated lawfare against Trump, and then when we say fine, just give us the documents!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/402qztvdfx\">pic.twitter.com\/402qztvdfx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Townhall.com (@townhallcom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1798005271111033163?\">June 4, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou were a judge, once nominated to the highest court in our country,\u201d the congressman said. \u201cWhen you were a judge, I\u2019m just curious, did you ever make political donations to partisan candidates?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garland, who was nominated for the Supreme Court in 2016 by then-President Barack Obama but was denied even a hearing by the determination of then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, answered with a stony, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t because that would create the potential appearance of impropriety,\u201d Gaetz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t because there\u2019s a federal rule barring federal judges from making contributions,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/michigan-argues-to-appeals-court-strip-clubs-are-safer-for-covid-than-schools\/\" title=\"Michigan Argues to Appeals Court Strip Clubs Are Safer for COVID Than Schools\">attorney general responded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Right. And that answer \u2014 technically correct, maybe, but a deliberate distraction from the point \u2014 was an example of exactly the kinds of hair-splitting, amoral technicalities Garland employed through the remainder of the exchange about Merchan, and about everything else Gaetz asked about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m well aware that you\u2019re not asking a hypothetical, you\u2019re asking me to comment on a jury verdict in another jurisdiction which has to be respected,\u201d he said as the congressman persisted. \u201cI won\u2019t comment on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz switched gears slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me ask you this question about your time as a judge,\u201d he said. \u201cWas there ever a time when you were a judge when you had a family member who was personally profiting off of the notoriety of the case that was before your court?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garland fell back on his dignity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very clear here you\u2019re asking me to comment on a case in another jurisdiction \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz was having none of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are aware that Judge Merchan\u2019s daughter was profiting off of this prosecution,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are aware that that creates the appearance of impropriety. You know the very reason there\u2019s a federal rule against judges giving donations is because it is the very attack on the judicial process that we\u2019re concerned about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XdTtzz5FX0g?si=J539W239zgF3PNrD\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was ugly, but Garland brought it on himself.<\/p>\n<p>His appearance before the committee was intended to justify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/doj-makes-unprecedented-claim-withhold-biden-audio-tape-far-will-let-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Justice\u2019s refusal<\/a> to turn over audio recordings of Biden\u2019s interview with special counsel Robert Hur, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/04\/us\/politics\/garland-republicans-justice-department.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>(That was the interview that convinced Hur that the president of the United States, a man who holds the most powerful job in the world, would be viewed by potential jurors as a \u201csympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory\u201d \u2014 a nice way of saying a doddering fool with a dribbling lip and prune juice on his shirt.)<\/p>\n<p>But in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/speech\/attorney-general-merrick-b-garland-delivers-opening-statement-house-judiciary-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bellicose opening statement<\/a>, Garland went out of his way to attack the \u201cconspiracy theory\u201d that his department is coordinating with local Democratic prosecutors in the ongoing legal warfare being waged against Trump \u2014 in Manhattan criminal court, in a civil lawsuit by the New York attorney general\u2019s office and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fani-willis-throws-tantrum-jim-jordan-contempt-deadline-arrives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fulton County, Georgia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz took that issue head on, challenging Garland to agree to produce any communications between the DOJ and the offices of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Fulton County DA Fani Willis.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Garland responded with a smokescreen, summoning up indignation at the very idea that anyone could suspect him and his department of lacking integrity \u2014 though he and his DOJ have done just about everything possible since 2021 to convince conservative Americans they lack both integrity and a commitment to the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>Merchan and his daughter are just the latest, most blatant examples of the bleeding wounds Democrats have inflicted on American system of justice.<\/p>\n<p>Figures such as Garland, FBI Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/letts-leak-fbi-memo-targeting-catholics-christopher-wray-needs-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Wray<\/a> and the execrable special counsel\/Democratic attack dog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/turley-savages-jack-smith-lays-truth-narrowly-tailored-gag-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Smith<\/a> have done their part too in recent years after being passed the batons of disgrace from the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/james-comey-comes-support-joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Comey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/brennan-clapper-finally-getting-taste-medicine-durham-barr-investigation-singles-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Clapper and John Brennan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(And that doesn\u2019t even get into the lower levels, like the adulterous lovebirds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/declassified-fbi-docs-reveal-agents-never-believed-trump-russia-conspiracy-not-even-strzok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Strzok<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lisa-page-finally-speaks-twists-narrative-make-victim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lisa Page<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In short, Americans \u2014 and not just Trump supporters \u2014 have plenty of reasons, going back almost a decade now, to suspect a conspiracy is afoot against Trump, whether it\u2019s the DOJ coordinating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-case-in-georgia-has-profound-consequences-on-justice-system-co-defendant\/\" title=\"Trump's Georgia case has significant impact on justice system, says co-defendant.\">state-level prosecutors<\/a> or simply agencies of the deep state spoonfeeding bile to one another and the establishment media outlets that support them.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t watched that Gaetz-Garland video, do yourself a favor and watch it.
