(AP Photo\/Manish Swarup)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Exit polls had indicated Modi\u2019s party would win by a landslide, which didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0He went into the election with a 74% approval rating, <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.morningconsult.com\/trackers\/global-leader-approval\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"according to\">according to<\/a> <em>Morning Consult<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not an election \u2014 it is a kind of political earthquake,\u201d Niranjan Sahoo, senior fellow with the New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-04\/modi-poised-to-lose-india-majority-need-allies-to-keep-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> <em>Bloomberg <\/em>as early results started to come in. \u201c[Modi\u2019s] position will be diminished to a great extent. He will not be the same Modi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To many supporters, Modi is a larger-than-life figure who has improved India\u2019s standing in the world, helping it grow to the fifth largest country with ambitions of it becoming the third by 2030. He\u2019s managed to turn adversity into economic advantage over the past decade. He also streamlined the country\u2019s welfare program, courted international investments, and became an example of how someone with a humble beginning can rise to power.  <\/p>\n<p>Critics claim Modi is a cultlike leader who has advanced divisive politics, preached anti-Muslim rhetoric, and used shady tactics to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/january-6-committee-subpoenas-trump-jr-associates-who-had-no-involvement\/\" title=\"January 6 Committee Subpoenas Trump Jr. Associates Who Had No Involvement\">silence political opponents<\/a> and come down hard on independent media. <\/p>\n<p>Modi\u2019s controversial new temple in the northern Indian city of Ayodhya served as the kickoff location for his reelection campaign but failed to deliver him the political victory he had sought. Modi built the massive temple on the ruins of the Babri mosque, which was demolished by a Hindu mob in 1992. Opposition parties, who ran on Modi wielding too much political power, celebrated. (AP Photo\/Manish Swarup)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Modi is a 73-year-old Hindu nationalist leader. <\/p>\n<p>He has gone from selling tea at train stations as a boy \u2014 his mother washed dishes \u2014 to a man who is only the second Indian to win three national elections in a row.  <\/p>\n<p>Modi was raised in a small town in northern Gujarat and has a degree in political science. <\/p>\n<p>He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1987. In 1995, Modi was made the secretary of the party\u2019s national organization,\u00a0and three years later, he was appointed its general secretary.\u00a0He became chief minister in 2001 and has built up a massive following, often using his experiences as a child whose family struggled financially to connect to hundreds of millions of voters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the pain of living under a weak roof,\u201d he said at a rally in Bastar, one of the poorest regions in India. <\/p>\n<p>Modi was sworn in as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uk-govt-lockdown-to-last-12-months-expect-repeated-vaccinations\/\" title=\"UK Govt: Lockdown to Last 12+ Months, Expect Repeated Vaccinations\">prime minister<\/a> of India on May 26, 2014.
