shortstop Tucupita Marcano a lifetime ban on Tuesday after he was found to have violated the league\u2019s policy on gambling.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement followed an investigation into the 24-year-old that found he wagered on more than 200 MLB games, including some that involved the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pittsburgh-sports-teams-join-mourning-synagogue-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> during the 2022 and 2023 seasons when he was on the team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/40275531\/tucupita-marcano-gets-life-mlb-ban-betting-baseball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Marcano was acquired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/padres-pitcher-arrested-tased-allegedly-breaking-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Diego<\/a> last fall.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the league said Marcano placed 387 bets related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ice-bucket-challenge-activist-dies-age-37\/\" title=\"Ice Bucket Challenge Activist Dies Age 37\">baseball<\/a>, with 231 of them on MLB games.<\/p>\n<p>Marcano wagered a total of $150,000 on the contests between October 2022 and November 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five of the bets involved his own team \u2014 the Pirates \u2014 while he was on the roster but was recovering from surgery for a torn ACL.<\/p>\n<p>He did not play in any of the games in which he had placed bets and lost each parlay wager that included his own team.<\/p>\n<p>Marcano was said to have ultimately won on 4.3 percent of all bets he placed on the outcomes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mlb-star-sends-fierce-memo-canada-defends-decision-miss-games-due-vaccine-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MLB games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His decision to wager on the games cost him much more than the money he lost as he will never suit up for another team again.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is this a fair punishment?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a statement, MLB commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nikes-mlb-uniform-problem-gets-even-worse-turns-new-pants-leave-little-imagination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rob Manfred<\/a> said that banning Marcano was crucial to protecting the integrity of the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strict enforcement of Major League Baseball\u2019s rules and policies governing gambling conduct is a critical component of upholding our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans,\u201d Manfred stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longstanding prohibition against betting on Major League Baseball games by those in the sport has been a bedrock principle for over a century,\u201d the commissioner concluded. \u201cWe have been clear that the privilege of playing in baseball comes with a responsibility to refrain from engaging in certain types of behavior that are legal for other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baseball clubs are clear with players that gambling on the sport they play is strictly prohibited and what the outcome will be.<\/p>\n<p>Per ESPN, it is believed Marcano is the first active player in 100 years to be handed a lifetime ban.<\/p>\n<p>In 1924, then-New York Giants outfielder Jimmy O\u2019Connell was also banned for life after he was found to have wagered on games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pete-rose-pens-letter-directly-mlb-commissioner-asking-forgiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pete Rose<\/a> was given a lifetime ban for gambling in 1989, but it was three years after he retired while he was managing the Cincinnati Reds.<\/p>\n<p>Marcano\u2019s bets were reportedly discovered when a \u201clegal sports betting operator\u201d reached out to the league to alert MLB officials.<\/p>\n<p>The Venezuelan national was not the only player punished on Tuesday, but he was the only one to be given a lifetime ban.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mlb-owners-decide-fate-oakland-athletics-relocation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oakland Athletics<\/a> pitcher Michael Kelly was handed a one-year suspension for placing bets on MLB games while he was in the minors.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, minor leaguers Jay Groome, Jose Rodriguez and Andrew Saalfrank were all suspended for one year.<\/p>\n<p>Every player punished on Tuesday denied betting on any games they played in and all denied having wagered with inside information.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from
