While \u2064Coca-Cola \u2063maintains \u2062its top position, Dr Pepper&#8217;s ascent signifies a\u200d notable shift in the \u2062soda industry, underscoring fierce competition in the beverage market.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 4, 2024 at 8:18am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A taste of Texas has come a long way and has now shoved Pepsi aside to be the No. 2 soda in America.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beverage-digest.com\/articles\/1082-2023-all-channel-results-lrb-dollars-up-79-volume-down-11-csd-volume-fell-17?v=preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beverage Digest<\/a> data, Dr Pepper has inched its way into the second-place spot long held by Pepsi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/dr-pepper-soda-sales-92b292c3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The giant of the industry remains Coke, which had a 19.18 percent market share in 2023, according to the report. But Dr Pepper had an 8.34 percent market share, edging Pepsi\u2019s 8.31 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Sprite was third at 8.09 percent, followed by Diet Coke at 7.82.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dr-peppers-days-numbered-soda-know-love-sold-18-7-billion-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Pepper<\/a> came into being in 1885 when Charles Alderton, a pharmacist and soda fountain operator, created a drink that replicated the smell of the drugstore in Waco, Texas, where he worked, according to the Journal.<\/p>\n<p>The combination blended 23 flavors, including cherry, vanilla, and multiple fruits and spices.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drpepper.com\/s\/corporateinfo#:~:text=Originally%20made%20in%20Morrison's%20Old,was%20once%20in%20love%20with.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Pepper website<\/a> says the drug store\u2019s owner, Wade Morrison, named the beverage after Charles Pepper, a Virginia doctor whose daughter Morrison had admired.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first of today\u2019s sodas created. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-coke-bottles-banned-tsa-looking-like-grenades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coca-Cola<\/a> was born in 1886 and Pepsi-Cola in the 1890s.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Pepper was long a fixture in Southern states as Coke gained a national foothold that went largely unchallenged until Pepsi began aggressive marketing in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will Dr Pepper ever replace Coke at No. 1?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now the beverage born in Waco has topped the Coke rival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr Pepper has been gaining, [Pepsi] has been declining, and they\u2019re meeting in the middle,\u201d Duane Stanford, editor of Beverage Digest, said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/03\/business\/dr-pepper-pepsi\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford said Pepsi is part of a massive corporation with multiple marketing priorities and is pushing its zero-sugar products.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pepsi-gets-roasted-branching-just-soda-joke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pepsi<\/a> had been second in almost every year since 1985 except for a three-year stretch when Diet Coke was second.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Pepper\u2019s efforts to grow a national name began in the 1970s, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>The brand is owned by Keurig Dr Pepper.<\/p>\n<p>The firm\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/krispy-kreme-will-give-free-doughnuts-to-vaccinated-customers\/\" title=\"Krispy Kreme Will Give Free Doughnuts To Vaccinated Customers\">chief marketing officer<\/a>, Andrew Springate, told the Journal that as of 2004, Dr Pepper was tied for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/china-to-leapfrog-u-s-as-worlds-biggest-economy-by-2028-think-tank\/\" title=\"China to leapfrog U.S. as world\u2019s biggest economy by 2028 \u2013 think tank\">sixth place<\/a> with Sprite, and since then it has been aggressive in marketing \u2014 particularly to college football fans \u2014 and in securing placements in soda fountains.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In yet another way-too-early pre-season poll, Fansville is favored as the #1 tv-drama-themed-college-football-marketing-campaign for the 5th year in a row. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AtLRCll8t5\">pic.twitter.com\/AtLRCll8t5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dr Pepper (@drpepper) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drpepper\/status\/1561021382200365056?\">August 20, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It also has been experimenting with new flavors, such as its Dr Pepper Strawberries &#038; Cream that was introduced last year, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Pepper devotee Daryl Allen of Seattle experiments with ways to improve the flavor, such as adding either hot peppers or pickles, the Journal reported.<\/p>\n<p>He was thrilled his soda was now No. 2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s awesome!\u201d Allen said. \u201cIt\u2019s such an underdog story.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
