The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-vanderbilt-pediatric-gender-clinic-pausing-transgender-surgeries-on-minors\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Vanderbilt Pediatric Gender Clinic Pausing Transgender Surgeries On Minors\">lawmakers obtained<\/a> a letter, reported by Politico,\u2063 criticizing the Justice Department for disregarding previous requests and demanding a briefing by June 17. They expressed \u200bconcerns about overcharging defendants and requested a comprehensive overview of \u200cthe cases.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"House Republicans\">House Republicans<\/a> is demanding that Attorney General Merrick Garland turn over a detailed account of every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/january-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Jan. 6\">Jan. 6<\/a> criminal case.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000018f-e11c-d7f2-a19f-fd9ccff90000&#038;nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=68612869-219e-4598-998c-18bb7c1f30b7&#038;nlid=630318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"letter\">letter<\/a>, signed by Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Thomas Massie (R-KY), obtained by <em>Politico<\/em>, chastised the Justice Department for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-subway-workers-call-for-protections-amid-uptick-in-violence\/\" title=\"NYC subway workers call for protections amid uptick in violence\">ignoring previous calls<\/a> for information and demanded a briefing on the Jan. 6 cases no later than June 17. The lawmakers criticized the DOJ for \u201covercharging\u201d some defendants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a threshold matter, the committee recognizes that, out of the 1,200 individuals the<br \/>department has prosecuted in relation to the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, many of these cases are meritorious and appropriate,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cHowever, we also know from reporting that individuals caught in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sidney-powell-is-an-american-legal-giant\/\" title=\"Sidney Powell Is an American Legal Giant\">department\u2019<\/a>s Jan. 6 sweep have committed no crime or have been overcharged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo facilitate our oversight, we request that the department provide a detailed and comprehensive breakdown, beyond what is publicly available, of the names of the individuals prosecuted, whether they were charged with committing violent or non-violent crimes, the specific charges against them, what offenses they ultimately pleaded guilty to violating, the sentencing requests and sentences received, and how they compare with non-Jan. 6 defendants who pleaded guilty to the same criminal offenses,\u201d they continued.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the number of defendants who had been charged and the nature of their crimes, the representatives also asked for a comparison between Jan. 6 sentences and those of \u201csimilar criminal convictions not related to Jan. 6 (such as the plea agreements reached in the cases involving assaults on federal officers and destruction of federal property in the Portland riots in the summer of 2020), a riot carried out by a left-wing mob.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They also asked for information on the alleged use of excessive force in arresting Jan. 6 defendants, focusing on the arrest of retirees Lora DeWolfe and Darrel Kennemer, whose home was <a href=\"https:\/\/ground.news\/article\/fbi-raids-retired-san-marcos-couples-home_b0e921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>raided<\/a> by the FBI in June 2022. Information was requested regarding any abuse of detainees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The letter also hinted at a possible involvement of the FBI in the events surrounding Jan. 6, with part of the letter saying, \u201cInvestigations have pointed to the FBI\u2019s possible involvement in facilitating the events of January 6.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The treatment of Jan. 6 defendants has become a cause celebre for many Republican hard-liners in Congress, with these efforts usually being led by Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
