For me, this was the party of the Kennedys and Franklin Delano Roosevelt\u2014great, if flawed, politicians who helped transform America during the twentieth century. Coming of age in the 1990s, I saw Bill Clinton as the embodiment of all those great Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>That is why I worked so hard to find a role in the Clinton White House\u2014albeit in its last couple months, as Al Gore and George W. Bush fought in the Supreme Court and cynicism surged in the West Wing (anybody remember<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2001\/jan\/26\/usa.martinkettle1\"> the missing \u201cWs\u201d<\/a> from White House keyboards?)\u2014and why I spent much of my career after that working to elect Democrats, including Joe Biden in 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2083729778\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f382532b8a1d1b66729f82110f82a590 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f382532b8a1d1b66729f82110f82a590\"><\/div>\n<p>But I also live and work in the real world, so I have seen the damage that the Democratic Party has done to America during Biden\u2019s reign. And it\u2019s getting worse. Witness the prosecution of former President Trump and the unprecedented guilty verdict rendered against him last week.<\/p>\n<p>Much ink has already been spilled about the danger the guilty verdict poses to America. It is an act of political retribution that is unprecedented in American history, a dangerous step for a country that set the global standard for even-handed constitutional government. It also reflects a flawed and biased legal process. Indeed, I suspect that most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rumors-flying-that-president-donald-trump-will-pardon-julian-assange-snowden-weighs-in\/\" title=\"Rumors Flying That President Donald Trump Will Pardon Julian Assange, Snowden Weighs In\">people involved<\/a> in the Trump prosecution assume the conviction will be reversed on appeal. They <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/31\/intentional-misfeasance-makes-show-trial-conviction-ripe-for-reversal-legal-experts-say\/\">may be right<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That makes no difference. The Trump prosecution served one purpose: to tar Trump as a \u201cconvicted felon\u201d and to give Biden an excuse not to debate him or otherwise subject himself to the rigors of a campaign. In that sense, the prosecution of Trump is no different than the lockdowns and paranoia of 2020, when Democrats used Covid-19 as an excuse to shut down the political campaign and hide Biden from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-cuomo-aide-reveals-n-y-state-withheld-nursing-home-covid-19-death-data\/\" title=\"Gov. Cuomo aide reveals N.Y. state withheld nursing home COVID-19 death data\">public scrutiny<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That was when my disillusionment with Biden started. It has only grown. As I have written <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/06\/im-a-democrat-who-thinks-bidens-anti-democratic-rhetoric-has-gone-too-far\/\">elsewhere<\/a>, Biden\u2019s administration has done everything that Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/13\/how-an-anti-trump-resistance-manifesto-actually-indicts-the-covid-tyrants\/\">said Trump would do<\/a> to undermine democracy: prosecute their political opponents; suppress dissent; attack families; and destabilize the world with never-ending foreign wars. And it\u2019s only going to get worse if Biden wins a second term.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6c6ee8e3b649bedd62847bb336e1e891 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6c6ee8e3b649bedd62847bb336e1e891\"><\/div>\n<p>This does not mean I have any love for Trump. I am concerned that, despite the tremendous public support he has gotten after the verdict, he will turn back into the establishment Republican that he governed as during his first term. I am concerned that he lacks the intellectual curiosity and discipline to govern during a true emergency.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the Covid paranoia started on Trump\u2019s watch. I believe the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fda-panel-recommends-moderna-and-jj-booster-shots\/\" title=\"FDA Panel Recommends Moderna And J&#038;J Booster Shots\">extraordinary times<\/a> we are living in require extraordinary leadership. I have serious doubts about Trump\u2019s ability to provide that, in part because I doubt he has the humility to reach across the aisle and work with the people who are trying to imprison him, something America needs to recover from this toxic period.<\/p>\n<p>In that sense, I disagree with <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/31\/after-trumps-conviction-republicans-should-do-to-democrats-what-they-did-to-him\/\">one author\u2019s suggestion<\/a> that the only way to recover from the politicized Trump prosecution is for Republicans to prosecute high-ranking Democrats for their transgressions. As the pollster Mark Penn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/does-guilty-verdict-destroy-trump-make-him-even-stronger\">pointed out,<\/a> Republicans started this back in the \u201890s when they used Clinton\u2019s shady personal life to justify dubious legal proceedings against a president that they couldn\u2019t beat at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>The way to respond to this transgression is not to retaliate against Democrats but to deny them the votes they think they are entitled to. Maybe that means you vote for Trump. Maybe that means you vote for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or Cornel West. Maybe it means you don\u2019t vote for president (something I never recommend but can understand).<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-10a82c7788d7d72d094d2e59feb1f516 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-10a82c7788d7d72d094d2e59feb1f516\"><\/div>\n<p>But don\u2019t reward Biden and hope things will get better. They won\u2019t. This is not about Trump, just like the Monica Lewinsky impeachment wasn\u2019t about Clinton. It\u2019s about power. It\u2019s about denying Americans a fair playing field on which to debate the issues and decide which direction the country heads in, just like the DNC denied Democrats who wanted it a fair primary campaign.<\/p>\n<p>To his credit, Penn is one of the few Democrats who publicly opposed both the Clinton and Trump lawfare. Good for him. My friend RFK, Jr., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/rfk-jr-warns-trump-conviction-backfire-democrats-bad-our-democracy\">is another<\/a>. Add my name to that list.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s send a message to all people in power: American has real problems. We need real solutions.
