These accusations were \u200bconnected to\u2063 the\u200d controversial Russia collusion claims, echoing historical\u2062 political \u2064disputes.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Former President Donald Trump was convicted Thursday on 34 charges for a crime that no one can clearly articulate, in a case <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/trump-was-convicted-but-prosecutors-contorted-the-law.html\">experts<\/a> on both sides of the aisle have dubbed \u201cill-conceived\u201d and \u201cunjustified.\u201d But Trump\u2019s real crime was winning the 2016 election \u2014 and the show trial in Manhattan was the culmination of the election denialism left-wing sycophants have spent the past eight years spreading.<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg alleged that Trump reimbursed his then-lawyer Michael Cohen for payments Cohen made to pornographer Stormy Daniels to suppress negative publicity about an affair Daniels claimed to have had with Trump. The alleged wrongdoing, according to Bragg, is that the payments to his lawyer should have been classified as campaign expenses rather than legal expenses. There is nothing illegal about nondisclosure agreements or purchasing negative press. But Bragg <a href=\"https:\/\/manhattanda.org\/district-attorney-bragg-announces-34-count-felony-indictment-of-former-president-donald-j-trump\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20People%20of%20the%20State,%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20District%20Attorney%20Bragg.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claims<\/a> Trump \u201corchestrated a scheme with others to influence the 2016 presidential election by identifying and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-will-be-in-court-instead-of-campaigning-for-8-weeks-thanks-to-democrats-new-york-lawfare\/\" title=\"Democrats in New York have caused Trump to spend 8 weeks in court instead of on the campaign trail\">purchasing negative information<\/a> about him to suppress its publication and benefit the Defendant\u2019s electoral prospects.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-629473505\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-39f70f96ed525f05c3cada2dbbc3cefa fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-39f70f96ed525f05c3cada2dbbc3cefa\"><\/div>\n<p>In order to make the payment sound more sinister \u2014 and to twist an alleged bookkeeping offense into 34 felonies \u2014 prosecutors suggested the payment to Daniels was part of a murky plot to steal the 2016 election. Biden\u2019s Department of Justice\u2019s former No. 3, Matthew Colangelo, said during opening statements of the trial that \u201cthis was a planned, long-running conspiracy to influence the 2016 election, to help Donald Trump get elected through illegal expenditures to silence people who had something bad to say about his behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was election fraud, pure and simple,\u201d Colangelo continued, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/trump-tried-to-corrupt-the-2016-election-hush-money-prosecutor-alleges-in-opening-statement#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PBS News<\/a>. \u201cThe defendant, Donald Trump, orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election. Then he covered up that criminal conspiracy by lying in his New York business records over and over and over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This All Stems From the Phony Russia-Collusion Hoax<\/h2>\n<p>Democrats accusing Trump of a conspiracy to steal the 2016 election might sound familiar.<\/p>\n<p>To add insult to injury, the original \u201cevidence\u201d used by Bragg\u2019s team to wage a lawfare campaign against the former president \u201ccame from an <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/2fa4aed6-9f49-475d-b740-ddba4528e8da?j=eyJ1IjoiMjNkenoifQ.A40plZkGscP5wyOU5MLZ_1h-9_1Ksn93GHf3c4nkWg0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FBI raid<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/6e1ab62a-78a3-438f-af39-e56ff7bfbb8a?j=eyJ1IjoiMjNkenoifQ.A40plZkGscP5wyOU5MLZ_1h-9_1Ksn93GHf3c4nkWg0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conducted<\/a> after Special Counsel Robert Mueller <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/82d084e0-6729-4f64-82c7-8c305e341028?j=eyJ1IjoiMjNkenoifQ.A40plZkGscP5wyOU5MLZ_1h-9_1Ksn93GHf3c4nkWg0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referred the matter<\/a> to the Southern District of New York,\u201d as independent journalist Matt Taibbi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/a-sham-case-and-everyone-knows-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pointed out<\/a>. \u201cMueller\u2019s investigation, remember, grew out of the FBI\u2019s dubious Crossfire Hurricane investigation,\u201d Taibbi added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c4c2e51edaf69c26ce0f3654a678cda7 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c4c2e51edaf69c26ce0f3654a678cda7\"><\/div>\n<p>In 2016, Clinton campaign lawyers enlisted the help of oppo research firm Fusion GPS to get dirt on Trump. Fusion GPS then used the funding to hire British spy Christopher Steele, who put his name on the so-called \u201cSteele dossier\u201d which had uncorroborated allegations that Trump was a Russian asset. The primary source for the dossier was Igor Danchenko, who was <em>actually <\/em>tied to Russian intelligence and was later indicted for lying to the FBI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/11\/after-using-russia-lies-to-meddle-in-2016-and-2020-agencies-dust-off-playbook-for-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">After Using \u2018Russia\u2019 Lies To Meddle In 2016 And 2020, Agencies Dust Off Playbook For 2024<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist\u2019s Margot Cleveland <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/spygate-101-a-primer-on-the-russia-collusion-hoaxs-years-long-plot-to-take-down-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>, Danchenko \u201cfed Steele false information about the Trump campaign, which a Clinton booster had invented and then passed on to Danchenko.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI then used this dossier as a pretense for illegally spying on the Trump campaign in what became known as Crossfire Hurricane. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a14dd34245c90b0228a95b6219bd1989 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a14dd34245c90b0228a95b6219bd1989\"><\/div>\n<p>Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/03\/24\/breaking-news-barr-to-release-summary-of-mueller-report-1233771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no evidence<\/a> that the Trump campaign conspired with Russian operatives, referred a matter regarding Cohen to the Southern District of New York. The FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mueller-refers-lobbying-cases-to-new-york-prosecutors\/\">raided<\/a> Cohen\u2019s home in April of 2018, \u201cin search of documents related to the hush-money payment\u201d as well as other documents pertaining to different matters, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-05-10\/trump-trial-bank-records-show-130k-hush-money-payment-to-stormy-daniels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>But the connection between the Russia collusion hoax and the Manhattan trial goes deeper than the origins of the evidence. Democrats have been reeling for eight years that Americans preferred Trump over Clinton, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/hillary-clinton-trump-is-an-illegitimate-president\/2019\/09\/26\/29195d5a-e099-11e9-b199-f638bf2c340f_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> Trump\u2019s presidency \u201cillegitimate\u201d ever since her defeat.
