Instead,\u200d applicants will provide service and teaching statements. Promotions will no longer mandate DEI statements, sparking debate\u200c over ideological testing in applications.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harvard University\u2019s Faculty of Arts and Sciences is eliminating the requirement for prospective tenure-track faculty members to submit a statement on how they will promote diversity, inclusion, and belonging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dean of Faculty Affairs and Planning Nina Zipser announced the change Monday, stating that it came about in response to numerous faculty members who said the requirement could be confusing for foreign applicants and was \u201ctoo narrow in the information they attempted to gather,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2024\/6\/4\/dei-faculty-hiring-stopped\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to the Harvard Crimson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis broader perspective acknowledges the many ways faculty contribute to strengthening their academic communities, including efforts to increase diversity, inclusion, and belonging,\u201d Zipser wrote, defending the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, applicants who are finalists will be required to submit two other documents: a service statement focused on their \u201cefforts to strengthen academic communities,\u201d and a teaching and advising statement about how they will help create a \u201clearning environment in which students are encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faculty members seeking promotions will also no longer be required to submit DEI statements, according to the Crimson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harvard\u2019s FAS, which includes the undergraduate school and some graduate schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/largest-protestant-adoption-agency-in-u-s-opens-to-lgbtq-couples\/\" title=\"Largest Protestant Adoption Agency In U.S. Opens To LGBTQ Couples\">began requiring<\/a> the statements five years ago, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/06\/03\/metro\/harvard-diversity-statements-dei-faculty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to the Boston Globe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Critics argue that the statements are a way to test the political leanings of applicants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harvard law professor Randall Kennedy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/harvard-law-professor-says-school-should-abandon-mandatory-dei-statements-ideological-pledges-of-allegiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">made the case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  against DEI statements, accusing them of asking candidates to \u201csupport ideological commitments\u201d and challenging academic freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am a scholar on the left committed to struggles for social justice. The realities surrounding mandatory DEI statements, however, make me wince,\u201d Kennedy, who is Black, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/column\/council-on-academic-freedom-at-harvard\/article\/2024\/4\/2\/kennedy-abandon-dei-statements\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wrote in the Crimson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThe practice of demanding them ought to be abandoned, both at Harvard and beyond.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He added that the statements discourage applicants who are conservative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt does not take much discernment to see, moreover, that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/harvard-law-professor-says-school-should-abandon-mandatory-dei-statements-ideological-pledges-of-allegiance\/\" title=\"Harvard Law Professor advocates for ending mandatory DEI statements as they resemble \"ideological pledges of allegiance.\">diversity statement regime leans heavily<\/a> and tendentiously towards varieties of academic leftism and implicitly discourages candidates who harbor ideologically conservative dispositions,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harvard has been under fire for its pro-DEI sentiment folllowing the ouster of former President Claudine Gay after accusations of plagiarism amid rising anti-Semitism under her leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harvard named a DEI advocate Vivian Hunt to serve as its new president of the Board of Overseers. In her position she will have the ability to weigh in on the choosing of Harvard\u2019s next president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hunt has a history of advocating against treating people equally, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/harvard-names-dei-advocate-to-key-role-in-presidential-search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a 2020 interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA neutral position that is meritocratic, that is good at treating people evenly, isn\u2019t good enough.
