And stores are noticing.<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s largest retailers moved to eliminate self-checkouts at many of their respective locations and the reason is disheartening in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Dollar General had announced the immediate end of multiple self-checkout kiosks and will remove the devices from more than 300 stores that have the biggest problem with what the retail industry calls \u201cshrinkage\u201d \u2014 something everyone else calls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/woman-arrested-allegedly-walmart-self-checkout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoplifting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Dollar General announcement originally came around the same time that other retail titans, like Walmart and Target, announced similar measures, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/walmart-self-checkout-target-dollar-general-costco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s be honest. The self-checkout idea is one that suffers the slings and arrows of many meme makers, with jokes of treating customers like store employees or complaints that stores are forcing customers to do the work an employee just so the store can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/restaurant-chain-outsources-cashiers-now-order-nicaraguan-call-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fire people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are on social media, it is highly likely you have seen the complaining and joking about self-checkouts.<\/p>\n<p>This one encapsulates all the attacks rather well:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">When you do self check out and bag your own merchandise<\/p>\n<p>You are saving the store money<\/p>\n<p>Because that\u2019s one less cashier that store have to pay<\/p>\n<p>Store are putting their CUSTOMERS TO WORK<\/p>\n<p>Some stores are (so greedy) all lines are now self check out lines <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zjJoKm9jsu\">pic.twitter.com\/zjJoKm9jsu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Malcolm Shabazz (@malcolmshabazz6) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/malcolmshabazz6\/status\/1713408041402400982?\">October 15, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you like self-checkouts?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen you do self check out and bag your own merchandise,\u201d one X user posted. \u201cYou are saving the store money Because that\u2019s one less cashier that store have to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The user added: \u201cStore are putting their CUSTOMERS TO WORK Some stores are (so greedy) all lines are now self check out lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the use, function and purpose of self-service kiosks can certainly be debated in a number of different ways, one thing is inarguable; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/next-time-check-grocery-store-watch-sneaky-woke-prompt-card-machine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thieves<\/a> are taking advantage, because that\u2019s what thieves do.<\/p>\n<p>And stores are getting fed up with it, given they way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/walmart-costco-considering-radical-change-stores-problems-self-checkout-becomes-clear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they<\/a> are all pulling back self-checkout lanes in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame that American society is breaking down so badly that these machines are facilitating a spike in thievery, of course.<\/p>\n<p>During the March quarterly earnings call where this was announced, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos and CFO Kelly Dilts specifically noted that tamping down on retail theft was a factor in pulling back the self-service kiosks, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/lifestyle\/dollar-general-drops-self-checkout-at-hundreds-stores-reduce-theft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dilts directly attributed \u201cyear-over-year shrink headwinds\u201d for the pullback, and noted that the issue \u201ccontinued to build during the year, increasing more than 100 basis points for both the fourth quarter and full year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dollar General executives made clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mcdonalds-makes-big-change-costs-rise-will-remove-popular-free-option-meals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-checkout<\/a> was rife with issues \u2014 but theft was at the root of many of them, thus prompting the 300 highest shrink stores to close their self-checkout lanes.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Dollar General is trying to limit its losses due to the habit of five-finger discounts as some morals-free thieves pay for some, but not all of the items with which they walk out of the store.<\/p>\n<p>Dollar General also noted that the company realized a 29.5 percent drop in actual sales during Q4, and a rising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lowes-attempts-thwart-rampant-theft-developing-high-tech-system-invisible-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retail theft<\/a> rate is not going to help matters.<\/p>\n<p>So, in many of the worst locations for theft, the company is putting employees back in the driver\u2019s seat at checkout registers.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the company is also acknowledging that many customers appreciate the one-on-one interaction with an actual employee and they don\u2019t like self-checkout in the first place. So, the move to begin to limit them is probably a good one, even if crime were non-existent (Hah!).<\/p>\n<p>It seems unlikely that the self-checkout machine is going to go away completely in the retail sector any time soon, but that may change as the ravaged economy has more people shelving their morals.<\/p>\n<p>If that trend continues, one can\u2019t help but ask: What other stores are going to start protecting themselves from unscrupulous thieves?<\/p>\n<p>And when will that finally start affecting law-abiding customers, as well?<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from Our Staff:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>In just a few months, the world is going to change forever.
