AFL initiated legal action for records, suspecting a focused effort against Trump.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>A conservative watchdog group is suing the Department of Justice (DOJ) for emails that could shed light on the DOJ\u2019s role in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u2019s criminal prosecution of Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Colangelo left his plum job near the top of President Joe Biden\u2019s DOJ to work for Bragg on the Trump case in December 2022, a highly unusual move that likely would have involved discussions with other DOJ brass about his departure. That case ultimately led to the conviction of Trump, Biden\u2019s election opponent, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-demands-his-verdict-go-straight-to-supreme-court-for-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">34 felonies<\/a> over a minor financial matter.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ did not turn over records for Colangelo\u2019s emails and calendar entries mentioning Trump during his time at the department, so America First Legal (AFL), a nonprofit helmed by former Trump official Stephen Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/media.aflegal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/03174917\/AFLvDOJ_ECF-001_Compl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one leaves being the #3 at the Department of Justice to go work in a district attorney\u2019s office\u2013no matter which one it is. There is no plausible explanation other than engagement in a coordinated campaign to target one man \u2013 President Trump. The American people deserve to see these records,\u201d Gene Hamilton, AFL\u2019s executive director, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Before serving as Acting Associate Attorney General, Colangelo worked for the New York Attorney General\u2019s office, which also investigated Trump, the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>A Freedom of Information Act request filed last year requested all of Colangelo\u2019s records containing the terms Trump or FPOTUS, as well as his calendar at the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the DOJ asked AFL to narrow the request, which it did, but the DOJ still did not provide the records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Defendant has violated the FOIA by failing to reasonably search for records,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Merrick Garland praised Colangelo in announcing his departure from the federal government, saying he relied on his \u201cwise counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/roy.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-roy-issues-statement-bragg-and-colangelo-testify-congress\">statement<\/a> that the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government has asked Bragg and Colangelo to testify before Congress about the prosecution of Trump, adding that \u201cit will take more than hearings \u2014 the GOP must radically constrain the power of government \u2014 by cutting spending used to fund this tyranny, firing bureaucrats, and legally holding people accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vance.senate.gov\/press-releases\/senator-vance-calls-for-criminal-investigation-into-judge-merchan\/\">called<\/a> Colangelo a \u201cplausible coconspirator\u201d in illegally depriving Trump of rights.<\/p>\n<p>AFL recently represented The Daily Wire in a similar lawsuit against the DOJ, in which the department initially declined to release records that, it turned out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/doj-hate-unit-tracked-moms-for-liberty-alongside-kkk-secret-emails-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> that the Department was lumping in the center-right parents group Moms for Liberty with the KKK, the Oath Keepers, and hate crimes.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A watchdog group sues DOJ for emails revealing its role in prosecuting Trump by Manhattan DA Bragg.
