Tensions persist on the Korean peninsula.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/%20\"><span>The Associated Press<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 3, 2024 at 12:45am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>South Korea announced Monday it\u2019ll suspend a rapprochement deal with North Korea to punish it over its launches of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-korea-vows-to-stop-dumping-balloons-of-trash-into-south-korea\/\" title=\"North Korea pledges to halt releasing trash-filled balloons into South Korea\">trash-carrying balloons<\/a>, even after the North said it would halt its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-cnn-anchor-stunned-discovering-dirty-surprise-inside-north-korean-balloons-sent-south-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">balloon campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over several days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kim-jong-un-orders-north-korea-prepare-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Korea<\/a> flew hundreds of balloons to drop trash and manure on South Korea in an angry reaction against previous South Korean civilian leafleting campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, South Korea said it would take \u201cunbearable\u201d retaliatory steps in response, before North Korea abruptly announced it would stop flying balloons across the border.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, South Korea\u2019s presidential national security council said it has decided to suspend a 2018 inter-Korean agreement aimed at easing frontline animosities, until mutual trust between the two Koreas is restored, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/graham-if-democrats-call-witnesses-at-trial-we-will-call-democrats-thatve-used-inflammatory-language\/\" title=\"Graham: If Democrats Call Witnesses At Trial We Will Call Democrats That\u2019ve Used Inflammatory Language\">presidential office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The security council said the suspension would allow South Korea to resume military drills near the border with North Korea and take effective, immediate responses to provocations by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/north-korea-pressing-hard-alliance-russia-comes-closer-forming-international-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Korea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It said a proposal on the suspension will be introduced at the Cabinet Council on Tuesday for approval.<\/p>\n<p>Observers say South Korea needs the deal\u2019s suspension to restart blasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts, K-pop songs and outside news from border loudspeakers.<\/p>\n<p>They say such broadcasts have previously stung in the rigidly controlled North, where most of its 26 million people are not allowed official accesses to foreign news.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 agreement, reached during a brief period of reconciliation between then-liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, require the Koreas to cease all hostile acts against each other, including propaganda broadcasts and leafleting campaigns.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will we see hostilities reemerge on the Korean peninsula?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But the accord doesn\u2019t clearly state civilian leafleting should also be banned.<\/p>\n<p>That has allowed South Korean activists to continue to fly balloons to drop anti-Pyongyang leaflets, USB sticks with South Korean dramas and world news, and U.S. dollars in North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Enraged over such leafleting campaigns, North Korea has previously fired at incoming balloons and destroyed a South Korean-built, unoccupied inter-Korean liaison office in the North.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 deal has already been in the danger of collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>Tension spiked after North Korea\u2019s spy satellite launch last November prompted both Koreas to take steps in breach of the accord \u2014 South Korea resuming frontline aerial surveillance and North Korea restoring border guard posts.<\/p>\n<p>Since last Tuesday, a total of about 1,000 North Korean balloons carrying manure, cigarette butts, scraps of cloth and waste paper have been discovered in various parts of South Korea. No hazardous substances were found, according to South Korea\u2019s military.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday night, Kim Kang Il, a North Korean vice defense minister, said the North would stop its balloon campaign because it left the South Koreans with \u201cenough experience of how much unpleasant they feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said North Korea will fly balloons again if South Korean activists restart their own balloon activities.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say North Korea\u2019s balloon campaign, reportedly the first of its kind in seven years, is meant to trigger a divide in South Korea over its current conservative government\u2019s tough policy on the North.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2022, North Korea has dramatically ramped up its weapons tests in what analysts call an attempt to bolster its nuclear capability and increase its leverage in future diplomacy with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Journal has not reviewed this Associated Press story prior to publication.
