Post-hearing,\u2062 Republicans are pursuing Fauci&#8217;s email records.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/anthony-fauci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"COVID-19 pandemic\">Anthony Fauci<\/a>, a former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/NIH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>National Institutes of Health<\/a> official who, for many, became the face of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"COVID-19 pandemic\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, testified Monday before a subcommittee of Congress tasked with investigating the origins of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, 83, faced heated questions from Republicans and was mostly defended by Democrats during the three-hour hearing, which came in the wake of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3024916\/fauci-hearing-three-things-to-watch-for-during-congressional-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"email scandal\">email scandal<\/a> involving one of his former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cuomo-may-have-joined-effort-to-discredit-1st-accuser-report-says\/\" title=\"Cuomo May Have Joined Effort To Discredit 1st Accuser, Report Says\">senior advisers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three major takeaways from the grilling. <\/p>\n<h2>Fauci distances himself from adviser<\/h2>\n<p>One of the top questions going into the hearing was how Fauci would react to the scandal involving his former senior adviser David Morens, who, in subpoenaed emails, bragged about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/faucis-return-to-the-headlines-could-cause-headaches-for-trump-and-biden\/\" title=\"Fauci's comeback could complicate matters for Trump and Biden\">skirting open records laws<\/a> and suggested Fauci was involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are getting FOIA\u2019d nonstop,\u201d Morens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3021456\/nih-email-scandal-covid-19-origins-inquiry-fauci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"wrote\">wrote<\/a> in one of them, \u201cso it\u2019s most important that Tony not have anything on the record that could come back to bite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in the hearing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3026049\/fauci-distances-david-morens-covid-email-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Fauci said\">Fauci said<\/a> Morens was clearly violating agency policy, that the two worked in separate buildings, and that Morens was an adviser in title only.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should not have been doing that,\u201d Fauci said. On Morens\u2019s claims that Fauci tried to protect the scientist Peter Daszak, who has since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3012771\/hhs-suspends-funding-to-head-of-organization-that-funded-wuhan-coronavirus-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cut off<\/a> from federal funding, Fauci added, \u201cI don\u2019t know where he got that, but that\u2019s not true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Morens implied that he spoke regularly with Fauci and that he could walk into his office or deliver materials to his home to avoid leaving a paper trail, Fauci told members of Congress those statements were not accurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Morens testified that he could walk into your office anytime he wanted to. Is that true?\u201d Rep. James Comer (R-KY) asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. That\u2019s not true,\u201d Fauci answered. \u201cYou don\u2019t just walk into the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on the committee are now attempting to get Fauci\u2019s private email and phone records in the wake of Morens\u2019s findings. During the hearing, he denied ever using those for government work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me state for the record that to the best of my knowledge, I have never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fauci-distances-himself-from-advisers-covid-email-scandal\/\" title=\"Fauci distances himself from COVID <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/faucis-agency-raked-in-690-million-from-big-pharma-in-the-wake-of-pandemic-lockdowns\/\" title=\"Fauci's Organization Gained 0 Million from Big Pharma After Pandemic Lockdowns\">email scandal involving<\/a> adviser&#8221;>conducted official business<\/a> using my personal email,\u201d he said. \u201cI do not do government business on my private email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>has contacted Fauci\u2019s counsel to ask if he plans to comply with requests for his email records.<\/p>\n<h2>Fauci open to lab link but not with NIH funding<\/h2>\n<p>The doctor repeatedly stressed that he keeps an open mind to the possibility that COVID-19 could have emerged from a lab in Wuhan, China \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3026151\/fauci-says-lab-leak-origin-of-covid-is-possible-but-not-with-nih-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"on one condition\">but with one caveat<\/a>: It wasn\u2019t developed with funding from the United States government.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci said he \u201ccannot account\u201d for experiments conducted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wuhan-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wuhan Institute of Virology<\/a> that were not funded by the NIH, but he was sure about the experiments it did fund.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, arrives to testify before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on June 3, 2024, in Washington, D.C. (Graeme Jennings \/ Washington Examiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe one thing I know for sure is that the viruses that were funded by the NIH phylogenetically could not be the precursor of SARS-CoV-2,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci testified it was \u201cmolecularly impossible\u201d that viruses experimented on under the EcoHealth Alliance subaward from NIAID could have been related to SARS-CoV-2 because they are \u201cso far removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a virological fact,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>He also explicitly denounced certain spinoff ideas regarding his role in the origins of the virus, including his reported visit to the CIA during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is a conspiracy is the kind of distortions of that particular subject like it was a lab leak, and I was parachuted into the CIA like Jason Bourne and told the CIA that they should really not be talking about a lab leak,\u201d Fauci said, referring to his alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/wenstrup-reveals-new-allegations-that-dr-fauci-potentially-influenced-cia-covid-19-origins-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meeting<\/a> with officials at the agency.<\/p>\n<h2>CDC kept at arm\u2019s length<\/h2>\n<p>Though not as strongly as with Morens, Fauci kept recommendations at arm\u2019s length from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention related to child masking and keeping a 6-foot distance from others to slow the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci insisted in a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Fauci-Part-2-Transcript.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transcribed interview<\/a> that he \u201cdidn\u2019t flip-flop\u201d on his masking position but rather that his position changed as more was learned about the virus.<\/p>\n<p>During the same interview, Fauci told the subcommittee that he did not have any scientific evidence for the precise number of 6 feet for social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just sort of appeared,\u201d Fauci said in his interview. \u201cI don\u2019t recall, like, a discussion of whether it should be 5 or 6 or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, he added that the NIH was not responsible for the number, saying \u201cit came from the CDC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fauci was then asked why he so vigorously defended those two positions if the science surrounding them was still emerging or nonexistent. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was [the CDC\u2019s] decision to make, and they made it,\u201d Fauci said before implying he did challenge the 6-foot rule behind the scenes. \u201cIt is not appropriate to be publicly challenging a sister organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci, a prominent figure during the COVID-19 pandemic, testified before a congressional subcommittee investigating the virus&#8217;s origins.
