The guide \u200bhighlights the significance of engaging with queer\u2063 literature to challenge societal norms and validate all children and individuals.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>Scholastic is encouraging teachers to \u201cdisrupt the status quo\u201d by exposing children to LGBT books this Pride Month, telling them they \u201cabsolutely know queer children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The children\u2019s book publishing company recently released its 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/content\/dam\/scholastic\/educators\/discussion-guides\/read-with-pride-disc-guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guide<\/a> for Scholastic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/site\/read-with-pride.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual<\/a> \u201cRead With Pride\u201d initiative, which includes LGBT children\u2019s book recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>The guide assures teachers, caregivers, and \u201cadvocates\u201d that \u201cwhether or not they are out to themselves or you, you absolutely know queer children and interact with them in your classrooms, libraries, and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBooks and literature are never neutral; by engaging with queer literature for children and young adults, you are disrupting the status quo that implies being cisgender, heterosexual, and allosexual are the default. You are showing children an expanded way of thinking and being that validates all children and all people,\u201d the guide states.<\/p>\n<p>Scholastic recommends LGBT books for children as young as preschool age.<\/p>\n<p>For \u201cthe youngest reader,\u201d Scholastic recommends several books, including \u201cMy Moms Love Me\u201d about a lesbian couple with a baby, and \u201cYou Are Loved,\u201d a book in which \u201creaders will meet families with two moms and two dads,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/site\/read-with-pride\/books.html#loved\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the description.<\/p>\n<p>Scholastic recommends dozens of books for older children ages eight to 12, including three by the same author, Alex Gino. \u201cMelissa\u201d is about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/girl-father-file-suit-saying-they-were-suspended-for-misgendering-boy-in-girls-locker-room\/\" title=\"Girl, Father File Suit Saying They Were Suspended For \u2018Misgendering\u2019 Boy In Girls\u2019 Locker Room\">trans-identifying boy<\/a>, and the other two books are about non-binary characters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people look at Melissa, they think they see a boy named George. But she knows she\u2019s not a boy. She knows she\u2019s a girl,\u201d reads the book\u2019s description.<\/p>\n<p>Another recommended book for ages eight to 12 is \u201cMoonflower\u201d by Kacen Callender. It is about a depressed non-binary 12-year-old who is \u201cafraid that their mom hates them\u201d and travels to a \u201cspirit realm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guide includes dozens of books aimed at young teens 14 and up, including \u201cThe Feeling of Falling in Love\u201d by Mason Deaver, which introduces children to the idea of a \u201cfriend with benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guide also lists resources for \u201csupporting\u201d LGBT youth and books, including The Trevor Project, a nonprofit that says it works to prevent LGBT youth suicides.
