The\u2063 narrative exposes the complexities surrounding the trial, Biden&#8217;s \u200cstatements, and the potential impact \u2064on public opinion and the legal\u2064 proceedings.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/jsaunders\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/jsaunders\/%20\"><span>Joe Saunders<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 3, 2024 at 10:02am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>At the White House spin machine, someone decided to change the storyline.<\/p>\n<p>With jury selection beginning Monday in Wilmington, Delaware, in the trial of President Joe Biden\u2019s notorious son, Hunter Biden, the president issued a statement \u2014 making a pretense of avoiding influencing the process.<\/p>\n<p>But considering Biden\u2019s own past statements on the subject, no American should fall for it.<\/p>\n<p>In the statement released Monday, Biden was all about feel-good fatherly love for an occasionally wayward offspring, mixed with a high-sounding sentence about not commenting on \u201cpending federal cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">POTUS statement as his son\u2019s trial gets underway. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bWcdj7ldQ1\">pic.twitter.com\/bWcdj7ldQ1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jacqui Heinrich (@JacquiHeinrich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JacquiHeinrich\/status\/1797621279652204719?\">June 3, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But that was a far, far cry from Biden\u2019s statement back when it actually mattered \u2014 when federal investigators were being forced to take some kind of action on Hunter Biden\u2019s violations of the law, whether in dodging taxes or lying on a federal form while buying a gun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son has done nothing wrong,\u201d Biden told MSNBC\u2019s reliably liberal Stephanie Ruhle in a May 5, 2023, interview, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/biden-defends-son-hunter-ahead-possible-federal-tax-gun-charges-rcna83154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC<\/a> reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The message then was not so much to Ruhle or even MSNBC\u2019s viewers as it was to the federal agents \u2014 a not-so-subtle warning from the head of the executive branch for the Justice Department to stay away from his family.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is the Biden family corrupt?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/my-son-has-done-nothing-wrong-hunter-joe-biden-justice-department-indictment-5b0df0d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> editorial board noted at the time, it was a \u201cpublic signal in an interview that Attorney General Merrick Garland will hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And oh, how Merrick Garland\u2019s Justice Department tried to obey it.<\/p>\n<p>They even came up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/defense-attorney-furious-seeing-hunter-biden-plea-deal-client-charge-wont-prison-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ghislaine-maxwell-now-accusing-prison-guard-of-abuse\/\" title=\"Ghislaine Maxwell Now Accusing Prison Guard Of Abuse\">sweetheart plea deal<\/a><\/a> that would have allowed Hunter Biden to avoid prosecution on the firearms charges he\u2019s facing in exchange for his pleading guilty to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-lawyer-calls-irs-whistleblower-a-criminal\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Lawyer Calls IRS Whistleblower a Criminal\">misdemeanor tax charges<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/07\/26\/us\/hunter-biden-plea-tax-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> reported in July 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hunter-bidens-sweetheart-plea-deal-now-investigated-house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deal also would have<\/a> granted Hunter Biden \u201cbroad immunity for past crimes,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/31\/house-launches-inquiry-into-hunter-bidens-botched-plea-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a> reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for the cause of justice, U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika blew the plea deal apart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/inside-3-hour-hearing-destroyed-hunter-bidens-plea-deal-really-bad-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during a lengthy hearing<\/a> July 26.<\/p>\n<p>And now Hunter Biden is going to trial. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/hunter-biden-indictment\/h_922f63e68b3eb7210f33ead927efe9d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN reported<\/a>, he faces two charges of lying on federal forms in 2018, in which he swore he was not addicted to drugs in order to buy a gun, and one count of illegally possessing the gun he purchased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today,\u201d Biden said in the statement. \u201cHunter\u2019s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>As the President, I don\u2019t and won\u2019t comment on pending federal cases <\/em>[italics added], but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Note the subtle difference \u2014 but a direct contradiction to what Biden told Ruhle last year.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Biden is claiming he can\u2019t comment on a federal case, but he had no problem doing it before \u2014 issuing a blanket (and laughably deceptive) statement that his son had done \u201cnothing wrong.\u201d (It\u2019s worth noting that Biden didn\u2019t repeat that claim Monday. He probably realizes it would only antagonize potential jurors.)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that Hunter Biden was not under indictment when Biden spoke to Ruhle, but he was under a federal investigation that was widely known. And the president was making his feelings known to his underlings as obviously as if he had written a memo from the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p>Now that that effort to abuse the powers of his office has failed to end his son\u2019s legal liabilities, Biden is turning to the heartstrings defense.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a doubt in the world that any American jury, in any state, would not be aware of the words the president has said about a case? If there is, there\u2019s no doubt at all that a jury in Wilmington, Delaware, would know about them.<\/p>\n<p>Delaware is the state Biden represented in the Senate for 35 years, the state he returns home to frequently.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s playing the heartbroken father card, the struggling addict card \u2014 just about anything to distract voters from the fact that the criminal charges his son is facing are just a minuscule part of Hunter\u2019s years of crime \u2014 when he earned millions of dollars for doing nothing more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/law-professor-clear-hunter-biden-selling-access-influence-joe-aware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peddling the Biden name<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence that Hunter Biden was using drugs at the time of the gun purchase is available not only from witnesses who knew him intimately, such as his deceased brother\u2019s widow, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/listen-hunter-biden-begs-hallie-money-like-child-4-minutes-straight-give-dad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hunter\u2019s lover in 2018<\/a>, but from Hunter Biden\u2019s autobiography, which is chockablock with drug use in his life, including around the time in question.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2022, the U.K.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11292765\/Joe-Bidens-emotional-voicemail-Hunter-gun-purchase.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a> carried a report about a recording of Joe Biden himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/report-joe-biden-tearfully-pleading-hunter-reveals-awareness-crack-fueled-meltdown-firearm-purchase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pleading with Hunter Biden<\/a> to get help with his drug addiction, three days after the Hunter Biden purchased the gun. The recording, naturally, was reportedly found on Hunter Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/npr-editor-reveals-station-ignored-hunter-biden-laptop-story-laptop-newsworthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infamous laptop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Can the president\u2019s transparent bid for sympathy overcome the mountain of evidence that Hunter Biden is guilty of lying on a federal form to purchase a gun \u2014 a crime other defendants have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/man-gets-2-year-sentence-gun-charge-similar-hunter-biden-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gone to prison for<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>That remains to be seen.
