A recent survey indicates that 34% are actively\u200c pondering\u2062 a move, while another 32% are willing to consider it, highlighting the substantial \u200cfinancial burden \u2063of living in New York compared to \u200bother\u200d locations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>More than a third of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New Yorkers<\/a> say the soaring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>cost of living<\/a> is forcing them to consider leaving the Big Apple as rent control laws and zoning restrictions drive housing prices up.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/why-new-yorkers-want-leave-poll-1906757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>survey<\/a> found that 34% of residents are actively considering leaving the city, while an additional 32% are open to moving. Additionally, 41% found living in New York was \u201cmuch more\u201d expensive than anywhere else, 43% were very concerned about their ability to afford living in New York, and 30% indicated they were fairly concerned about the cost of living. <\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>The Empire State Building is seen through the George Washington Bridge at sunset on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in New York. Between April 2020 and July 2023, the state lost 6.2% of its residents.<\/p>\n<p>Rising housing costs are one of the primary factors pushing New Yorkers to move out of the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>According to RentCafe, the price of housing in New York is 80% higher than the national average. Meanwhile, its overall cost of living is 27% higher than the rest of the country. <\/p>\n<p>Some experts say New York\u2019s strict rent control laws are contributing to its housing crisis. <\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s rent stabilization laws have been in place since 1969, controlling more than 1 million units in the city. <\/p>\n<p>Rent control advocates say the laws shield low-income tenants from dislocation and radical changes in costs.\u00a0Opponents of rent control policies argue that keeping prices artificially low for a few drives up prices for the majority of residents, making it difficult for landlords to cover the costs of housing while reducing incentives for developers to build new housing units. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce rent control is applied, \u2018excess demand caused by the controls spills over into the uncontrolled sector and increases rents,\u2019 in New York that meant rents went up as much as 25 %,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/freopp.org\/rent-control-paper-f565f84517c5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a> Roger Valdez,\u00a0director of the Center for Housing Economics.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/beltway-confidential\/2713593\/supreme-court-wont-hear-challenge-to-nycs-50-year-assault-on-private-property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>declined<\/a> to hear challenges to New York City\u2019s rental control laws, most recently rejecting an appeal in February. <\/p>\n<p>New York is also home to some of the country\u2019s most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/californias-housing-shortage-double-national-average\/\" title=\"California's housing shortage is twice the national average.\">restrictive zoning laws<\/a>, which some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2023\/05\/25\/new-yorks-housing-shortage-pushes-up-rents-and-homelessness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>experts<\/a> say reduce the supply of housing and drive artificially high housing prices.<\/p>\n<p>Congressional Republicans have their own take on New York\u2019s cost of living crisis. In a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) blamed Democrats\u2019 policies for fueling the Big Apple\u2019s decline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers are rightfully fed up with the failed far-left Democrat policies that have made the Big Apple and the state unlivable,\u201d Stefanik told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt every opportunity, radical New York Democrats led by Kathy Hochul and Eric Adams have put the needs of New Yorkers last, prioritizing progressive wish list items such as enabling the surge of illegal immigrants, and fostering the crime crisis with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/three-more-cities-vote-no-confidence-in-progressive-l-a-county-d-a-gascon-amid-recall-threat\/\" title=\"Three More Cities Vote \u2018No Confidence\u2019 In Progressive L.A. County D.A. Gasc\u00f3n Amid Recall Threat\">pro-criminal policies<\/a>, all while raising taxes,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter years of failed leadership at the hands of far-left New York Democrats, New Yorkers have had enough.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) shared similar sentiments with the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York leading the nation in outmigration has nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with the high taxes and skyrocketing cost of living in our state,\u201d Lawler said. \u201cI\u2019m going to keep fighting to get New Yorkers the relief they need \u2014 from lifting the SALT cap, to reducing inflationary spending, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-manchin-record-inflation-threat-getting-worse\/\" title=\"Sen. Manchin: Record inflation threat \u2018getting worse\u2019\">lowering energy costs<\/a>, to securing our border so we can end the migrant crisis overwhelming our state.
