He shouldn\u2019t make it any harder than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s unfortunately what the former Maryland governor did when he made an unforced error last week, saying Americans should \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovLarryHogan\/status\/1796283536565014873\">respect<\/a>\u201d the results of the unprecedented Democrat show trial in New York targeting the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump:<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1430779952\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5b5d300095edcb474d9124afe5d05cbe fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5b5d300095edcb474d9124afe5d05cbe\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s absolutely true that the rule of law made this nation great, which is why what he said was so heinously wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The New York City trial of Trump bore more resemblance to a Soviet show trial or a third-world kangaroo court than the American system of justice. The case was brought after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ex-manchin-aide-who-shaped-bidens-signature-energy-spending-law-lands-policy-role-at-influential-firm\/\" title=\"Former Manchin aide secures policy role at influential firm after shaping Biden's energy spending law\">law firm connected<\/a> to Joe Biden and the Democrat Party lent some of its top attorneys to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. <\/p>\n<p>Bragg campaigned on pledges to go after Trump. When they were first filed, the 34 felony indictments were roundly derided by even Democrat partisans as weak, inappropriate, and corrupt. Only after a series of other Democrat efforts to imprison Trump began to falter did they rush to rehabilitate this case.<\/p>\n<p>Still, even legal experts at the end of the trial were unclear on exactly what laws Trump was alleged to have broken and how. Neverthless, a jury comprised of Manhattan residents \u2014 one of the country\u2019s most anti-Trump jurisdictions \u2014 took hardly any time at all to find Trump guilty on each of the nebulous charges.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fe76d91a54dd94b5fc6ed8f45ddc9e02 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fe76d91a54dd94b5fc6ed8f45ddc9e02\"><\/div>\n<p>Judge Juan Merchan ran a cartoonishly biased trial where he allowed a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/judiciary\/4697118-braggs-thrill-kill-in-manhattan-could-prove-short-lived-on-appeal\/\">torrent<\/a>\u201d of improper testimony from prosecution witnesses, no matter how much it violated the accused party\u2019s rights, while disallowing expert testimony for the defense, such as from former Federal Elections Commission Commissioner Brad Smith. Judge Merchan, who was hand-picked to run the trial, also had profound personal and familial conflicts of interest. He had contributed money to political efforts to help Biden and stop Trump, in contradiction to rules for New York judges, and his daughter\u2019s clients were a veritable who\u2019s who of Democrat politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Even after years of prosecutorial and courtroom violations of Trump\u2019s rights, the judge added to the problems by giving jury instructions that allowed the twelve to convict regardless of whether they agreed on what occurred in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Under no circumstances should any American who claims to support the Constitution and care about the rule of law support show trials. This isn\u2019t even remotely a close call.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Principled Leadership Over Petty Feelings<\/h2>\n<p>Maryland is overwhelmingly Democrat. Hogan won the Republican primary last month despite his liberal views at odds with many Maryland Republicans. If he is to have a shot at winning, he has to keep the support of those Republicans, only about a third of the state, and gain enough support from independents and some Democrats to put him over the top against Democrat opponent Angela Alsobrooks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3d775b35d25a07d87b9aa7bc9659c037 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3d775b35d25a07d87b9aa7bc9659c037\"><\/div>\n<p>To that end, he\u2019s been broadcasting his independence. \u201cI want to say this up front: In the Senate, Republicans can\u2019t count on my vote,\u201d Hogan said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aHpqyJd0-QM\">30-second TV ad he released last week<\/a>. He added that neither could Democrats. He said he\u2019d make his decisions based on what\u2019s best for the state.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan has never made any secret of his hatred for Trump. It\u2019s Hogan\u2019s outspoken opposition to the Republican leader that has garnered him so much airtime on corporate media. He in no way needs to set that aside to do the right thing in terms of principled opposition to lawfare and coalition-building political savvy.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Party tent is big enough to include people even with Hogan\u2019s anti-Trumpist views. It is almost certainly not big enough, however, to include people who support show trials. Every single person who might be willing to vote for Hogan knows Trump\u2019s conviction by the New York City prosecutor, judge, and jury is completely political.<\/p>\n<p>Every single person who might be part of the Hogan coalition also understands that rule of law and equal justice under the law are absolute bedrocks and foundational tenets of American culture. Hogan will lose if he tells voters he tolerates unequal justice under the law. Hogan should not play games or be cute on this issue.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Rep. Joe Heck were convinced that Trump would lose after the Access Hollywood tape release, and moved quickly to denounce it as part of their Senate campaigns. That <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/24\/gop-needs-a-trump-victory-in-november-to-retain-senate-control\/\">turned out to be politically unwise<\/a>, but at best it was something they could defend on principle.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, defending show trials is both politically unwise and completely unprincipled. There is simply no reason to do it unless you want to hurt Trump and other Republicans more than you want to help preserve the United States of America.<\/p>\n<p>Is Hogan running to beat a left-wing Democrat and ensure the majority Republican Senate conference has one additional moderate member? Or is Hogan running simply to hurt Republicans\u2019 chances of winning the presidency by parroting extreme Biden campaign talking points?<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s the former, he should quickly speak against Democrat lawfare. Nobody expects him to do it with the passion and principle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2024\/05\/31\/congress\/gop-senators-new-vow-against-dems-00161031\">Mike Lee<\/a>, the senior senator from Utah, or of Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/marcorubio\/status\/1796562291405586497\">Marco Rubio<\/a> of Florida. But he could at least do it at the level of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/romney-bragg-political-decision-trump-case-malpractice\">Mitt Romney<\/a>, the junior senator from Utah. If he can\u2019t do that, he can at least give the lip service that Senate Minority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LeaderMcConnell\/status\/1796343412914004233\">Mitch McConnell<\/a> or his wannabe successor Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenJohnThune\/status\/1796314427454628247\">John Thune<\/a> of South Dakota gave.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, it\u2019s not hard for Hogan to do the right thing, the American thing, and say clearly that politically motivated prosecutions are bad and elections should be decided by the voters, not by lawfare.<\/p>\n<p>If he can\u2019t say that or doesn\u2019t believe it, Republicans should not bother wasting money or votes on him, because he will have zero chance of success.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-899e0fc7d6a76e732411ebd9dee4677a fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-899e0fc7d6a76e732411ebd9dee4677a\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Larry Hogan faces challenges in pursuing a U.S. Senate seat.
