Although Republicans see potential benefits from\u2063 his conviction for his campaign, the\u2062 looming appeals \u200band possible limitations on his campaigning pose significant challenges to \u2063his political future.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Uncertainty surrounding former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s sentencing after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> jury found him guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trumps-criminal-hush-money-trial-set-for-march-25\/\" title=\"Trump's hush money trial scheduled for March 25\">hush money trial<\/a> is creating uncertainty regarding his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>presidential campaign<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Republicans are optimistic that Trump\u2019s campaign will be helped, not hindered, by his conviction, brought by Manhattan District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/alvin-bragg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Alvin Bragg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s sentence, scheduled to be handed down by New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Manuel Merchan on July 11, four days before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-convention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican National Convention<\/a>, will be stayed until his appeals are exhausted, according to Republican strategist Charlie Black.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will continue to be free on bond and campaign any way he wants,\u201d Black told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cHe can have rallies where the banner says \u2018Woe is me\u2019 and whine about his predicament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his attorneys have previewed a range of possible grounds for appeal, from Merchan\u2019s refusal to grant the former president a venue change to the presiding justice changing the parameters of a defense campaign finance expert witness\u2019s testimony, his instructions to the jury before their deliberations, in addition to him, more broadly, being biased.<\/p>\n<p>Black\u2019s prediction downplays speculation Trump\u2019s sentence could impede his campaign. For example, if Trump is sentenced to time in a state prison, with a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars. His sentence could also include a fine or community service, even probation.<\/p>\n<p>For Republican strategist Cesar Conda, any restrictions Merchan places on Trump\u2019s ability to campaign will be perceived by the former president\u2019s supporters \u201cas election interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears that Trump\u2019s conviction was of a low enough level that he likely will be eligible for a form of probation that would leave him free to campaign,\u201d Conda, a former chief of staff to Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marco-rubio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Marco Rubio<\/a> (R-FL), told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on Trump\u2019s sentence and appeals, there will \u201calmost certainly\u201d be some impact on his campaign, according Northeastern University political science Chairman Costas Panagopoulos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean Trump will be unable to campaign altogether,\u201d Panagopoulos told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cHe could do so virtually or by relying on surrogates or in other, indirect ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican National Committee<\/a> Co-Chairwoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lara-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Lara Trump<\/a>, Donald Trump\u2019s daughter-in-law, has been asked about the campaign\u2019s contingency plans regarding the former president\u2019s sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have him doing virtual rallies and campaign events if that is the case,\u201d Lara Trump told Fox News. \u201cWe\u2019ll have to play the hand that we\u2019re dealt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything has been stacked against him from the day he came down to the golden escalator in Trump Tower in 2015 and decided to run for president as a Republican,\u201d she said. \u201cDespite all of it, he always ends up on top. And this will be no different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Trump campaign spokeswoman did not provide the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> with any more details concerning those plans.<\/p>\n<p>Panagopoulos, the professor, contended it is unlikely those \u201cconstraints\u201d would affect Donald Trump\u2019s campaign \u201cdynamics\u201d since it is predominately his most \u201cardent\u201d supporters who attend his rallies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it could scale back media coverage these events generate and opportunities to campaign with Republicans running in down-ballot races,\u201d Panagopoulos said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, these GOP contenders need to think twice now about distancing themselves from the convicted felon now atop the Republican ballot,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>As of Friday, Donald Trump has a national 2 percentage point average edge over Biden, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/trump-vs-biden-vs-kennedy-vs-west-vs-stein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>RealClearPolitics<\/em><\/a>. That advantage could widen as Donald Trump and his campaign remain adamant that the former president is being politically persecuted, not only in his hush money trial but also in his federal cases, brought by special counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jack-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jack Smith<\/a>, and his Georgia matter, brought by Fulton County District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fani-willis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Fani Willis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-big-biden-panic-the-president-is-trailing-but-perhaps-the-guilty-verdict-against-trump-will-save-him\/\" title=\"Biden's Challenge: Trailing President Hopes Trump Verdict Will Turn the Tide\">hush money conviction<\/a> could mean for him personally, including for his freedom, Donald Trump, his campaign, and his supporters have grasped on to the political opportunity by repeating that \u201cpolitical prisoner\u201d message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s conviction is widely viewed by Republicans as an overreach because of the unprecedented nature of using a federal underlying crime to support state charges,\u201d Conda, the strategist, said. \u201cThis conviction has helped him raise money and will further his argument that he is treated differently than President Biden with regard to how the courts handle allegations of impropriety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis seems like a moment that has unified the party support for Trump going into this fall,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt is a \u2018rally around the flag\u2019 moment for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To Conda\u2019s point, former Kansas GOP Rep. Tim Huelskamp claimed Merchan \u201chates\u201d Donald Trump, \u201cdetests any American who supports Trump, and railroaded Trump just like they do to opposition candidates in his home country of Colombia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMerchan will stop at nothing he deems necessary to defeat President Trump, be it jail time, home imprisonment, travel bans, or gag orders,\u201d Huelskamp told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThis is not about a supposed crime or the rule of the law \u2014 this is about reelecting Joe Biden by any means in his power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump underscored his campaign\u2019s strategy during his first post-conviction press conference in the lobby of Trump Tower on\u00a0Fifth Avenue, referring to Merchan\u2019s gag order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll play that game a little bit longer,\u201d the former president said Friday of the order. \u201cBut you\u2019re allowed to talk about it.
