The impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/entertainment-district-benefits-dont-outweigh-the-cost-economists-say\/\" title=\"Economists say entertainment district costs outweigh benefits\">deal raises concerns<\/a> about Hamas&#8217;s leverage and Israel&#8217;s future options.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 2, 2024 at 2:07pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s proposal to end the war in Gaza is just fine with Hamas, but members of Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jerusalem-violence-leads-to-hamas-rockets-on-israel-nine-dead-in-gaza\/\" title=\"Jerusalem Violence Leads to Hamas Rockets on Israel, Nine Dead in Gaza\">governing coalition<\/a> are not so sure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/netanyahu-refuses-blink-bidens-weapons-threat-will-stand-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden<\/a> has called for a three-phase plan to end the war, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/netanyahu-aide-israel-agreed-biden-cease-fire-plan-gaza-rcna155075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first step is a six-week cease-fire, an Israeli pullout from populated areas and the release of women and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/catholic-cardinal-offers-to-trade-himself-for-hamass-child-hostages\/\" title=\"Catholic Cardinal proposes exchanging himself for Hamas's captive children.\">children held hostage<\/a>. Phase two would exchange the rest of the living hostages for imprisoned Palestinians. The final phase would rebuild Gaza and send the remains of the dead hostages to Israel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/graphic-new-video-hamas-terrorists-taunting-young-israeli-girls-threat-rape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas<\/a> has reacted to the proposal \u201cpositively,\u201d according to the U.K.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2024\/06\/01\/israel-hamas-war-truce-benjamin-netanyahu-joe-biden-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, two members of the Israel governing coalition are dead set against it.<\/p>\n<p>Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/we-will-not-be-dictated-to-by-hamas-new-israeli-national-security-minister-visits-temple-mount\/\" title=\"\u2018We Will Not Be Dictated To By Hamas\u2019: The New Israeli National Security Minister Visits Temple Mount\">national security minister<\/a>, said his party would \u201cdissolve the government\u201d if Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/germany-returns-anti-semitic-past-threatens-arrest-benjamin-netanyahu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> accepts the deal, calling Biden\u2019s plan \u201ca victory for terrorism and a security risk to the State of Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgreeing to such a deal is not total victory \u2013 but total defeat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister, said he would \u201cnot be part of a government that will agree to the proposed outline\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand the continuation of the war until Hamas is destroyed and all hostages return,\u201d he said, referring to the proposed prisoner exchange for hostages as the \u201cwholesale release of terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should Israel accept a ceasefire?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Opposition leader Yair Lapid rebuked Ben Gvir and Smotrich, and said the opposition would keep the government in power if it goes for Biden\u2019s deal, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/06\/02\/israel-hamas-war-news-gaza-palestine-ceasefire-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe threats from Ben Gvir and Smotrich are [an act of] abandoning national security, the hostages and residents of the north and the south,\u201d Lapid said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the worst, most reckless government in the history of the country. From their perspective, let there be war here forever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s plan is also supported by the faction of the Israeli population that wants such hostages as may be alive returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that Biden\u2019s speech will pressure whoever needs to be pressured in order for there to be a deal,\u201d Mor Kornigold, whose brother Tal Shoham is among the hostages held in Gaza by Hamas, said, per the Post.<\/p>\n<p>In an Op-Ed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-hamas-war\/article-804707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerusalem Post<\/a>, Yonah Jeremy Bob sums up the plan\u2019s impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginally, Israel was going to get around 40 hostages in \u2018Phase One\u2019 of the ceasefire, before it withdrew from all of Gaza. Under the latest deal, it may only get 15-20 hostages in \u2018Phase One,\u2019 leaving much more leverage (remaining hostages) for Hamas to use to play games in later stages of negotiation and potentially leaving the terror group immune to some future attacks,\u201d Bob wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Israel has reduced the Hamas military threat in the short and medium term, but its legitimacy has been the most badly damaged in around 50 years. Also, it is giving up its leverage or leaving open questions on issues which collectively make it more likely than not that Hamas will eventually make a comeback,\u201d Bob continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, as problematic as the deal appears, given the government\u2019s inability to decide about replacing Hamas with some other party even when it held all of the strongest cards for several months, it is unclear what other options Israel has beyond an endless war and more permanent harm to the Jewish state\u2019s legitimacy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
