This poses a threat\u2063 to aquatic life due \u200dto \u2063oxygen \u200ddepletion, emphasizing the lake&#8217;s struggle against\u200c algae and potential health \u2062risks for \u2063humans.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 2, 2024 at 9:15am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Northern California\u2019s Clear Lake is anything but that in an image taken from space that shows the extent of algae blooms in the water.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Landsat 9 satellite recorded an image on May 15 that showed bright green denoting algae over much of the lake, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/152867\/clear-lake-clouded-by-algae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The algae bloom is linked to substances such as phosphorus and other chemicals that NASA said are due to \u201crunoff from nearby farms, vineyards, faulty septic systems, gravel mines, and an abandoned open-pit mercury mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Clear Lake was anything but clear in May!<\/p>\n<p>The lake in California is prone to algal blooms, like the green swirls seen in this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Landsat?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Landsat<\/a> image. But blooms have become more frequent in recent years due to increased nutrient inputs. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v3dRdNqQF9\">https:\/\/t.co\/v3dRdNqQF9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iERl4HFMP5\">pic.twitter.com\/iERl4HFMP5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NASA Earth (@NASAEarth) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASAEarth\/status\/1795866266315448757?\">May 29, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>  \u201cThese excess nutrients can cause harmful algal blooms,\u201d said Ian Hendy, a senior scientific officer at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Portsmouth in England, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/algal-bloom-california-clear-lake-satellite-images-1905843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a bust or boom scenario whereby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/deflorida-blueprint-how-desantis-has-pursued-a-teddy-roosevelt-conservationist-image\/\" title=\"DeSantis' Teddy Roosevelt-like conservationist approach in DeFlorida Blueprint.\">blue-green algae<\/a>, for example, will proliferate and utilize all of the available dissolved oxygen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/toxic-algae-wrecking-floridas-coasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">algae<\/a> use the oxygen, there is none left for other forms of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis process creates very low oxygen levels in the water, making life for aquatic organisms such as fish and invertebrates very dangerous,\u201d Hendy said.<\/p>\n<p>NASA warned that the bloom may contain blue-green algae, which is also called cyanobacteria.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Have you ever been to Clear Lake?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Some cyanobacteria produce microcystin, which can irritate the skin and cause liver and kidney damage.<\/p>\n<p>Clear Lake is about 60 miles north of San Francisco Bay. Covering 68 square miles, it is a popular spot for outdoor activities like boating and fishing, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-05-31\/striking-before-and-after-photos-show-californias-famed-clear-lake-turn-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>. It has also long battled algae blooms.<\/p>\n<p>NASA reported that the latest blooms are increasing and that \u201cthree species of blue-green algae can cause adverse human health effects under certain conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s analysis of the lake said levels of chlorophyll-a, which can help approximate cyanobacteria levels, hit some of their highest values of the month on May 15, when the image was taken.<\/p>\n<p>NASA cautioned that an actual water sample needs to be taken to be sure of what is going on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if toxins were not present, the abundance of algae could still harm aquatic life; bacteria consume oxygen as they break down dead phytoplankton, which can cause hypoxia and dead zones,\u201d NASA cautioned.<\/p>\n<p>The level of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/woman-says-trip-pond-killed-3-dogs-contracted-blue-green-algae-poisoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">algae bloom<\/a> could impact boating, fishing and swimming at the lake, one of the most-visited lakes in the country, for several weeks, \u00a0according to the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n<p>A May 8 analysis of the lake did not show the bloom.
