(AP Photo\/Seth Wenig)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Critics claim he intentionally targeted Trump not because of the crimes committed but because he disagreed with his politics and wanted to prevent him from seeking a second term. <\/p>\n<p>Supporters insist Bragg has been open from the start about following the paper trail in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-big-problem-with-the-stormy-daniels-hush-money-case-against-trump\/\" title=\"The Big Problem With The Stormy Daniels Hush Money Case Against Trump\">hush money case<\/a> and that his decision to indict the\u00a0presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee was entirely evidence-based. <\/p>\n<p>Bragg arguably filed the weakest of the four indictments against Trump but was the first prosecutor who managed to get their case over the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg, a Democrat, ran for office as someone ready to hold Trump and other powerful New Yorkers accountable. <\/p>\n<p>The incumbent, Cyrus Vance Jr., had been heavily criticized for failing to bring\u00a0charges against influential heavyweights like Harvey Weinstein and two of Trump\u2019s children, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. <\/p>\n<p>While campaigning, Bragg made a point of highlighting his experience investigating the Trump family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have investigated Trump and his children and held them accountable for their misconduct with the Trump Foundation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/02\/nyregion\/manhattan-district-attorney-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"he said during a 2020 candidate forum\">he said during a 2020 candidate forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIt is a fact that I have sued Trump more than a hundred times. I can\u2019t change that fact, nor would I. That was important work. That\u2019s separate from anything that the DA\u2019s office may be looking at now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bragg beat out Vance but also faced criticism for failing to indict the former president immediately. Prosecutors in his office started to quit and speak out publicly, forcing Bragg\u2019s hand to pursue a case that seemed like a legal stretch at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg used a Russian nesting doll structure to go after Trump, tucking crimes inside other crimes, which appeared risky to legal analysts but worked in the end.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was ultimately found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to a porn star during his 2016 presidential campaign. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did my job, and we did our job,\u201d Bragg said at a news conference after the verdict when asked about the criticism he received about his handling of the investigation and the case. \u201cThere are many voices out there, but the only voice that matters is the voice of the jury, and the jury has spoken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who has called himself a political prisoner and vowed to appeal the verdict, argued that he has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-desantis-wont-bend-to-bidens-attempts-to-restrict-travel-to-fla\/\" title=\"Gov. DeSantis: Won\u2019t bend to Biden\u2019s attempts to restrict travel to Fla.\">unfairly targeted<\/a> and is being used to further Bragg\u2019s political aspirations.\u00a0He has accused billionaire liberal donor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/george-soros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"George Soros\">George Soros<\/a> of financing Bragg\u2019s 2021 election campaign and claimed Bragg \u201ccampaigned on the fact that he would get President Trump.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis\u00a0is a guy campaigning,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou want to get President Trump at any cost and this before he knew anything about me, didn\u2019t know a thing about me. He was campaigning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called the guilty verdict a \u201cshameful day in American history\u201d and slammed the trial as \u201ca purely political exercise, not a legal one.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3011593\/stefanik-jordan-demand-answers-judge-anti-trump-comments-no-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Republicans\">Republicans<\/a> on the House Judiciary Committee\u2019s select subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government asked Bragg and prosecutor Matthew Colangelo on Friday to testify before them on June 13. The hearing \u201cwill examine the unprecedented political prosecution\u201d of Trump. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/susan-collins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Sen.\u00a0Susan Collins\">Sen.\u00a0Susan Collins<\/a> (R-ME), one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump on an impeachment charge following the 2021 attack on the Capitol, also came to the former president\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n<p>She criticized the \u201cpolitical underpinnings\u201d of Bragg\u2019s decision to go after Trump and said it could \u201cfurther blur the lines between the judicial system and the electoral system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe district attorney, who campaigned on a promise to prosecute Donald Trump, brought these charges precisely because of who the defendant was rather than because of any specified criminal conduct,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)\u00a0argued that the trial undermined trust in the justice system and called Bragg \u201ca political hack prosecutor\u201d who \u201cmanufactured charges in one of the most liberal legal venues in the country.\u201d\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL)\u00a0put it in the simplest terms: \u201cIf the defendant were not Donald Trump, this case would never have been brought.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Supporters of Bragg disagree and point to comments he repeatedly made about not prejudging the case before seeing the facts. <\/p>\n<p>When asked during a Hot 97 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iQLflgGxUrU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"interview\">interview<\/a> about Trump, Bragg said he wouldn\u2019t rush a case against Trump. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I\u2019m being careful not so much for running for office, but because every case does have to be judged on its facts, and I don\u2019t know all the facts, right?\u201d Bragg said. \u201cAnd so I\u2019ve been doing this for 20-plus years, so I want to be fair. But with that said, there\u2019s a lot that\u2019s out there publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Nichols, author of <em>It\u2019s OK to Be Angry About Capitalism, <\/em>also pushed back on Trump\u2019s claims Bragg targeted him. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER \">CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBragg never suggested that he would cut corners, or be unfair when it came to bringing the felony case that would ultimately make Trump the first former president in US history to be a convicted felon,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/donald-trump-democracy-alvin-bragg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"he said\">he said<\/a>. \u201cWhat he promised was that he would not blink. He would not shy away from doing the job he was assigned by the electorate, and that he was duty-bound under the law to perform.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cBragg kept the promise that he made as a candidate to pursue equal justice under the law.
