Dean Phillips (D-MN) called on New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul to pardon former President Donald Trump following his conviction in the Manhattan hush-money trial.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips, who ran for president in the Democratic primary and was blown out by President Joe Biden, argued that Trump\u2019s guilty verdict will only energize the Republican candidate\u2019s base ahead of the 2024 election. Trump was convicted on Thursday of 34 counts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rep-jordan-subpoenas-former-manhattan-prosecutor-who-pushed-for-trump-indictment\/\" title=\"Rep. Jordan Subpoenas Former Manhattan Prosecutor Who Pushed for Trump Indictment\">falsifying business records related<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-grand-jury-seated-for-next-stage-of-trump-investigation\/\" title=\"New Grand Jury Seated for Next Stage of Trump Investigation\">hush-money payments<\/a> sent to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>While the Democratic congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/deanbphillips\/status\/1796695686215348594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slammed<\/a> Trump as \u201ca serial liar, cheater, and philanderer, a six-time declarer of corporate bankruptcy, an instigator of insurrection, and a convicted felon,\u201d he argued on Friday that Hochul should pardon the former president \u201cfor the good of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Phillips was blasted for calling on Hochul to pardon the convicted Republican candidate, he doubled down on his argument in a tweet on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think pardoning is stupid? Making him a martyr over a payment to a porn star is stupid. (Election charges are entirely different.),\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/deanbphillips\/status\/1796873915073003952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s energizing his base, generating record sums of campaign cash, and will likely result in an electoral boost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul applauded the conviction of Trump, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/05\/31\/nx-s1-4987264\/new-york-gov-kathy-hochul-weighs-in-on-trumps-conviction-in-her-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a>, \u201cJustice was served.\u201d She added that she doesn\u2019t believe the felony conviction \u201cis going to be a factor in the election for our congressional candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the immediate aftermath of Trump\u2019s conviction, donations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-raises-staggering-sum-of-cash-in-24-hours-since-verdict?topStoryPosition=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poured<\/a> into the Trump campaign as the former president raised over $50 million in the 24 hours after the jury\u2019s verdict, his campaign said. The hush-money trial has been blasted by legal experts who worry that criminal prosecutions of political opponents will become the norm in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>While a pardon of Trump from a Democratic governor is highly unlikely, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has other avenues to challenge his conviction. Legal scholar and George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/turley-weighs-in-on-what-comes-next-following-trumps-guilty-verdict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> in a blog post published on Friday that, eventually, Trump\u2019s appeal of the verdict could reach the Supreme Court, adding that he believes \u201cconvictions will be overturned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, moments like this require us to take a leap of faith in a nation that remains committed to the rule of law. Manhattan is neither the entirety of the country nor the legal system. I believe that these convictions will be overturned, but it will take time,\u201d Turley wrote. \u201cJudge Merchan committed, in my view, layers of reversible error.
