Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 1, 2024 at 7:52am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>After U.S. and British strikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen killed 16, the Houthis announced that they\u2019d launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/my-former-friends-have-joined-the-fascists\/\" title=\"My Former Friends Have Joined the Fascists\">counter-attack<\/a> on an American aircraft carrier. If only we had known about it.<\/p>\n<p>No, seriously. The idea that the Houthis launched an attack on our military was apparently a surprise to our military, which promptly noted that not only was no damage done to the ship they claim to have targeted, but no missile was ever detected.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about a crushing reprisal, at least rhetorically: The Houthis publicly assert they struck back with commensurate force and we apparently didn\u2019t even notice.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/yemens-houthis-say-they-launched-missile-attack-us-aircraft-carrier-eisenhower-2024-05-31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>, the attempted counter-attack on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-iranian-backed-militia-official-downplays-us-strikes-iraq-hints-deescalation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USS Eisenhower<\/a>, which is currently in the Red Sea, came in response to Thursday attacks that killed 16 and injured 41, a spokesman for the group said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrikes on the province of Hodeidah targeted the port of Salif, a radio building in Al-Hawk district, Ghalifa camp and two houses,\u201d Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet continued: \u201cThe U.S. and British militaries said they launched strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen on Thursday to deter the militant group from further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-allied-attack-on-the-houthis-a-telegraphed-punch-to-avoid-war-with-iran\/\" title=\"Allied strike on Houthis: A premeditated move to prevent Iran conflict\">disrupting shipping<\/a> in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. Central Command said U.S. and British forces had hit 13 targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Western forces are in the Red Sea to protect ships from attacks by the rebel forces \u2014 which control much of Yemen, including the capital \u2014 the Houthis insisted that the \u201cbrutal aggression\u201d was in response to the group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/expelled-us-college-pro-hamas-protests-iranian-university-offer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backing of Hamas<\/a> in its war against Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Iran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/houthis-line-wrong-target-launch-assault-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Houthis\u2019 sugar daddy<\/a>, seconded the notion that this was all about Gaza.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are the Houthis able to strike a U.S. aircraft carrier?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe aggressor U.S. and British governments are responsible for the consequences of these crimes against the Yemeni people,\u201d said Nasser Kanaani, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>To the extent there is a bit of truth to this, the Houthis\u2019 attacks on shipping in the Red Sea are supposedly in support of the Gazan cause. In reality, it\u2019s little more than another attempt by Iran and its proxies to expand its conflict with Israel and the West, one which has met with mixed results.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, one would expect that the attack should have prompted reprisal \u2014 if the Houthis were able to manage it.<\/p>\n<p>And, while they claim to have at least <em>tried<\/em>, the rhetoric sounded a bit more like one of those infamous \u201cBaghdad Bob\u201d media briefings during the early stages of the Iraq War \u2014 where a spokesman for Saddam Hussein\u2019s collapsing government assured everyone that Iraq was crushing the infidel invaders.<\/p>\n<p>While Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree told the media that the Eisenhower was targeted with its missiles, numerous outlets \u2014 including Reuters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/houthi-rebels-didnt-hit-us-aircraft-carrier-as-they-claimed-2024-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/News\/gulf\/2024\/05\/31\/yemen-s-houthis-say-they-launched-missile-attack-on-us-aircraft-carrier-eisenhower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Arabiya<\/a> \u2014 confirmed with U.S. officials that the claim was false.<\/p>\n<p>Now, given the situation, it would be difficult for the United States to hide the damage to the aircraft carrier that\u2019s spearheading American response to Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. So, either they managed to intercept the missiles and are pretending that the attack never happened, there was some sort of malfunction after the missiles were fired and Americans weren\u2019t able to detect the incoming projectiles on radar, or it simply didn\u2019t occur.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, this manages to neatly sum up what the Houthi rebels are to the West: an annoyance, and a potentially deadly one, but not a match for U.S. might.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the Houthis have been an issue for America that goes back to the Obama administration, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hamas-rioters-paid-attack-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shirked its responsibility<\/a> to properly police the malignancy growing on the Yemeni body politic.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats then attempted to kneecap any attempt by former President Donald Trump\u2019s administration to deal with the Houthi problem once and for all. Under President Joe Biden \u2014 who\u2019s been reluctant to engage with any of Iran\u2019s proxies directly in the vain hope that the nuclear deal with Tehran can somehow be salvaged \u2014 the Houthis have been more or less ignored until they started disrupting shipping lanes.
