Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 1, 2024 at 8:28am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The mother of Gabby Petito, the 22-year-old who lost her life at the hands of confessed murderer Brian Laundrie, said at a conference Friday that she had forgiven her daughter\u2019s killer \u2014 but not his mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI speak for myself here when I say Brian, I forgive you,\u201d Nichole Schmidt said to a crowd at CrimeCon 2024 in Nashville, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/gabby-petitos-mom-forgives-killer-brian-laundrie-calls-out-evil-roberta-you-deserve-forgotten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>. \u201cI needed to release myself from the chains of anger and bitterness, and I refuse to let your despicable act define the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone once said that harboring unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the person you\u2019re still mad at to die; Schmidt appears to understand that.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe she doesn\u2019t. Because she\u2019s apparently willing to let the actions of Laundrie\u2019s mom \u201cdefine the rest of [her] life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not deserve forgiveness,\u201d Schmidt said of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/brian-laundries-parents-flee-florida-home-sale-sign-appears-outside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roberta Laundrie<\/a>. \u201cYou deserve to be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs for you, Roberta, and I call you out individually because you are evidently the mastermind that shattered your family and mine with your evil ways, I see no empathy in your eyes,\u201d Schmidt said, according to Fox. \u201cNo remorse in your heart and no willingness to take responsibility for your actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, of course, is not how forgiveness works \u2014 but I\u2019ll get to that in a second.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot for a moment blame Schmidt for her feelings of anger, resentment, sorrow and loss. I\u2019ve never lost anyone I care about to murder, and can only imagine how overwhelming those feelings must be.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Laundrie had concerns about Schmidt\u2019s welfare after \u201cerratic phone calls\u201d with her son, according to Fox, must only make that worse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Did the Laundries know about Brian\u2019s involvement in the murder?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Schmidt and her ex-husband, Joe Petito, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/brian-laundries-parents-plotted-help-son-escape-petito-family-lawsuit-alleges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">settled a suit<\/a> with Laundrie\u2019s parents last year, in which they claimed that the defendants knew about Gabby Petito\u2019s murder and helped their son escape justice for his actions.<\/p>\n<p>Which, ironically, is what Schmidt went on to do herself \u2014 help Brian Laundrie escape justice. Because that\u2019s what forgiveness is.<\/p>\n<p>We can only forgive someone when they owe us something \u2014 a financial debt can be forgiven, of course, but so can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bishop-targeted-terrorist-attack-church-issues-incredible-statement-forgives-attacker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a moral debt<\/a>. When I wrong someone \u2014 by murdering a mother\u2019s daughter, say, although that\u2019s obviously an extreme example \u2014 I now owe a debt to that mother for what I did to her.<\/p>\n<p>Only then can I be forgiven. Only when I in fact owe something. Not because I \u201cdeserve\u201d forgiveness \u2014 forgiveness only means something if I don\u2019t deserve it. If I owe you no debt, your forgiveness means literally nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt forgave Brian Laundrie, though he didn\u2019t deserve it \u2014 that\u2019s how forgiveness works. Schmidt refuses to forgive Roberta Laundrie, <em>because<\/em> she doesn\u2019t deserve it. That\u2019s <em>not<\/em> how forgiveness works.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt is absolutely correct that Roberta Laundrie doesn\u2019t deserve her forgiveness. But if she did deserve it, she wouldn\u2019t need it.<\/p>\n<p>We live in a similar tension with God Almighty. We need forgiveness, but can never deserve it. Justice, in fact, demands that we pay for our sins. That\u2019s why Paul wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+5%3A6-11&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 5:8<\/a>, \u201cGod shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s love, all right \u2014 dying for those who could never earn or deserve that death. Paying our penalty so that justice can be served \u2014 served out painfully on the body of Jesus Himself \u2014 and forgiveness purchased by His blood.<\/p>\n<p>And now we\u2019re all called to do the same \u2014 to forgive those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/devout-christian-nurse-kidnapped-daughter-haiti-forgives-captors-christs-name-hope-hug-heaven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who don\u2019t deserve it<\/a>: \u201cBlessed are the merciful,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt+5%3A1-12&#038;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus said<\/a>, \u201cfor they shall receive mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And none of us deserve it. Not Brian Laundrie. Not his mother. Not even Nichole Schmidt. Not me. Not you. None of us.<\/p>\n<p>I pray that Nichole Schmidt can find the grace \u2014 for it can only happen by God\u2019s grace \u2014 to forgive Roberta Laundrie. Just as I pray that she will find the grace to seek God\u2019s forgiveness for her own sins.<\/p>\n<p>Just as I pray that I would accept God\u2019s grace in my own life, face my sins instead of denying them or explaining them away, and seek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jesus-taught-love-kindness-forgiveness-elon-musk-drops-biblical-lesson-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forgiveness<\/a> and mercy in Christ.<\/p>\n<p>That would be a good way for Schmidt \u2014 and me, and you, my friend \u2014 to define the rest of our lives.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>An Important Message from Our Staff:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>In just a few months, the world is going to change forever.
