Dan Laughlin, R-Erie, sponsored a plan on Thursday that would establish subscription programs that guarantee residents receive 100% solar power from a local source instead of a traditional grid mix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill will allow those who truly believe in renewable energy, but live in settings that are not conducive to generating it, to put their money where it will back up their desire for a cleaner grid,\u201d he said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Although residents can shop for renewable energy plans on Pennsylvania\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-the-supreme-court-upended-epas-power-grab-and-curbed-the-administrative-state\/\" title=\"How The Supreme Court Upended EPA\u2019s Power Grab And Curbed The Administrative State\">retail electricity market<\/a>, most of that generation comes from projects in Tennessee or Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman in Laughlin\u2019s office said many of the plans sold on the market aren\u2019t truly \u201cgreen,\u201d either. This is because project developers often sell their solar renewable energy credits to fossil fuel suppliers, who then use the credits to prove some of the power supplied to customers comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/green-infrastructure-backers-stand-to-profit-from-govt-spending-boost\/\" title=\"\u2018Green Infrastructure\u2019 Backers Stand to Profit From Gov\u2019t Spending Boost\">renewable sources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The credits range from $3.50 per megawatt hour produced to as much as $370, depending on each state\u2019s market value. In October 2022, Pennsylvania credits were worth between $40 and $42.<\/p>\n<p>Laughlin\u2019s plan, however, requires local sources to keep their credits so that the generation counts toward the state\u2019s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard, thereby guaranteeing that it\u2019s \u201cgreen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proposal comes amid the senator\u2019s staunch opposition to a plan to install wind turbines in Lake Erie. The <a href=\"https:\/\/d.docs.live.net\/7386e72e356037a2\/Desktop\/%E2%80%9CThe%20risk%20of%20the%20windmills%20on%20the%20lake%20are%20not%20worth%20the%20reward,%E2%80%9D%20Banta%20said.\"><strong>House OK\u2019d the measure in April<\/strong><\/a>, which would permit land leases in the central and western regions of the lake.<\/p>\n<p>While supporters say the development plans avoid ecological and economic disruptions, critics beg to differ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this bill is proposed for environmental stewardship, it\u2019s anything but,\u201d said Rep. Jake Banta, R-Waterford, during an April 17 floor debate.<\/p>\n<p>He said negotiations left out the property owners, anglers and charter captains he represents who \u201cwant to preserve their peaceful way of life.\u201d All of them worried the wind turbines would not only destroy the view along the shoreline, but also risk contamination from oil leaks and stir up toxic sediment along the lake bed.<\/p>\n<p>Laughlin did not comment on the bill at the time, but clarified Thursday that he doesn\u2019t support it.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Pennsylvania, many struggle with the cost and feasibility of accessing solar power.
