Upper III<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   June 1, 2024 at 3:25am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The decline in the U.S. moose population in recent years may have less to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nobel-peace-prize-the-most-controversial-winners\/\" title=\"Nobel Peace Prize: The Most Controversial Winners\">man-made<\/a> causes and more to do with Mother Nature than previously thought, according to a recent study.<\/p>\n<p>Research published in March in the <a href=\"https:\/\/meridian.allenpress.com\/jwd\/article-abstract\/doi\/10.7589\/JWD-D-23-00112\/499632\/Geographic-Distribution-and-Neuropathology-of?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of Wildlife Diseases<\/a> found a parasitic worm, Elaeophora schneideri, in half of the dead adult Shiras moose studied in southeastern Idaho, although it wasn\u2019t found in any of the moose bodies investigated in the northern part of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The parasite, which can grow to 4 inches when fully mature, is generally passed to moose by tabanid flies, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/moose-idaho-dying-parasitic-worms-1901328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>None of the 20 juvenile moose had contracted the parasite, according to the study, which was conducted between March 2020 and July 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Newsweek suggested that some of the decline in moose population could be attributed to \u201chunting and habitat decline,\u201d though it should be noted that none of the three species of moose found in America appears on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecos.fws.gov\/ecp0\/reports\/ad-hoc-species-report?kingdom=V&#038;kingdom=I&#038;status=E&#038;status=T&#038;status=EmE&#038;status=EmT&#038;status=EXPE&#038;status=EXPN&#038;status=SAE&#038;status=SAT&#038;mapstatus=3&#038;fcrithab=on&#038;fstatus=on&#038;fspecrule=on&#038;finvpop=on&#038;fgroup=on&#038;header=Listed+Animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Fish &#038; Wildlife Service<\/a>\u2019s list of 1,499 threatened or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/thanks-biden-feds-soon-violate-5th-amendment-using-endangered-species-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endangered animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Newsweek, the parasitic worm infects the animals\u2019 brains and can lead to \u201csevere symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe parasite can severely disrupt a moose\u2019s circulation system, leading to blindness, ear damage and often death,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that of the 10 moose infected with the parasite, nine had \u201cmicrofilariae, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-study-provides-bad-news-for-wind-energy-advocates\/\" title=\"New Study Provides Bad News for Wind Energy Advocates\">early life stage<\/a> of the parasite, throughout their brains,\u201d according to Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/parasitic-brain-invading-worm-originates-southeast-asian-rats-detected-us-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parasites<\/a> were also found throughout the moose\u2019s major arteries in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trans-student-walkout-group-admits-most-just-wanted-to-skip-school-boasts-about-tricking-media\/\" title=\"Trans Student Walkout Group Admits Most Just Wanted To Skip School, Boasts About Tricking Media\">adult form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Have you ever seen a moose in the wild?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Moreover, three of the infected animals exhibited some sort of ear damage, while four displayed \u201cabnormal behavior\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/aggressive-moose-stumbles-strangely-tiny-alaskan-town-kill-charging-beast-notice-horrifying-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prior to their deaths<\/a>, likely because of the presence of the parasites in their nervous system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe microfilaria are just scattered throughout their brains, and even though the damage from each is miniscule [sic], they\u2019re basically shot-gunning the whole brain,\u201d pathologist Kyle Taylor of Washington State University\u2019s Animal Disease Diagnostics Laboratory told Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hypothesize the cumulative effects of large numbers of microfilariae in the brain may be associated with increased morbidity or chance of mortality, with mortality more likely in cases with larger numbers of worms,\u201d Taylor explained.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers believe that as the parasitic worms cause brain damage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-moose-caught-video-hospital-lobby-eating-decorative-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moose<\/a> become more vulnerable to both other health issues and predators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really need to have an understanding of all the issues related to moose population decline, and this parasite appears to be a factor,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p>Mule deer and black-tailed deer, on the other hand, can carry the parasite without serious harm, according to Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, no tests exist to determine whether a live moose is infected by Elaeophora schneideri, so identification of infected specimens is only possibly postmortem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study also explored the geographic spread of E. schneideri in Idaho,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2024\/05\/240515122801.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science Daily<\/a>. \u201cThe parasite was found to be widespread in southeastern Idaho, aligning with its prevalence in neighboring regions of Montana and Wyoming.
