Despite attempts to clarify exceptions, the lack of definition leaves medical professionals cautious due to ambiguous guidelines.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/%20\"><span>The Associated Press<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 31, 2024 at 7:48am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected a challenge to one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the United States following a lawsuit by women who had serious pregnancy complications.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling from the court, whose nine justices are all elected Republicans, is the latest decision to uphold Texas\u2019 abortion ban, which critics say does not offer enough clarity over when exceptions are allowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas law permits a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/actor-nick-searcy-blasts-open-borders-after-illegal-immigrant-arrested-for-raping-10-year-old-ohio-girl\/\" title=\"Actor Nick Searcy Blasts Open Borders after Illegal Immigrant Arrested for Raping 10-Year-Old Ohio Girl\">life-saving abortion<\/a>,\u201d the court wrote in the order signed by Republican Justice Jane Bland.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, state District Judge Jessica Mangrum granted a temporary injunction preventing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/?s=Texas+abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a> from enforcing the ban against doctors who in their \u201cgood faith judgment\u201d ended a pregnancy that they determined was unsafe because of complications.<\/p>\n<p>But that injunction was immediately blocked by an appeal from the Texas attorney general\u2019s office to the state\u2019s Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed in March 2023 did not seek to repeal Texas\u2019 abortion ban, but instead aimed to force more clarity on when exceptions are allowed.<\/p>\n<p>The suit argued that exemptions under the law, which allow an abortion to save a mother\u2019s life or prevent the impairment of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-abbott-signs-bill-banning-abortions-if-roe-v-wade-is-overturned\/\" title=\"Gov. Abbott Signs Bill Banning Abortions If Roe V. Wade Is Overturned\">major bodily function<\/a>, are written too vaguely and create confusion among doctors, who were turning away some pregnant women experiencing health complications because the physicians feared repercussions.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/arizona-republicans-stand-firm-keep-1864-abortion-ban-place-handing-pro-choice-democrats-big-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion ban<\/a> has made medical professionals wary of facing liability if the state does not consider the situation a medical emergency.<\/p>\n<p>But the Texas Supreme Court also declined to offer clarity on the exemptions late last year after Kate Cox, a mother of two from Dallas, sued the state for the right to obtain an abortion after her fetus developed a fatal condition and she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/irans-navy-reaches-new-milestone-during-biden-era-set-to-get-advanced-tech-to-boost-military\/\" title=\"Iran\u2019s Navy Reaches New Milestone During Biden-Era; Set To Get \u2018Advanced\u2019 Tech To \u2018Boost\u2019 Military\">made multiple trips<\/a> to an emergency room.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should more states outlaw abortion?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cox ended up leaving the state for an abortion before the court ruled that she hadn\u2019t shown her life was in danger. The court called on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judges-discuss-eugenics-in-ruling-upholding-ohios-down-syndrome-abortion-ban\/\" title=\"Judges Discuss Eugenics In Ruling Upholding Ohio\u2019s Down Syndrome Abortion Ban\">state medical board<\/a> to offer more guidance.<\/p>\n<p>The medical board\u2019s proposed guidelines, unveiled earlier this year, offered little beyond advising doctors to meticulously document their decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>And Texas\u2019 Republican-led Legislature is not expected to make any changes to the law\u2019s language.<\/p>\n<p>The lead plaintiff in the case, Amanda Zurawski, had been told she had a condition that meant her baby would not survive. But the Austin woman was forced to wait until she was diagnosed with a life-threatening case of sepsis before being provided an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Zurawski spent three days in intensive care and was left with a permanently closed fallopian tube from the infection, which affects her ability to have more children.<\/p>\n<p>Under the law in Texas, doctors who perform abortions risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/former-espn-host-found-guilty-conspiracy-commit-murder-charges-faces-rest-life-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life in prison<\/a>, fines of up to $100,000 and revocation of their state medical licenses.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents say that has left some women with providers who are unwilling to even discuss terminating a pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Most Republican-controlled states have started enforcing new bans or restrictions on abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 overturned Roe v.
