And they hope their discovery leads to a new diagnosis that can provide answers to families.<\/p>\n<p>Those with the condition have a constellation of issues, which also include short stature, small heads, seizures and low muscle mass, said the researchers, who published their findings in the journal Nature Medicine on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were struck by how common this disorder is\u201d when compared with other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ashton-kutcher-opens-rare-autoimmune-disease-brought-knees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rare diseases<\/a> linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-war-isnt-over-stu-scheller-announces-discharge-from-the-marine-corps-his-planned-media-blitz\/\" title=\"'The War Isn't Over': Stu Scheller Announces Discharge from the Marine Corps, His Planned Media Blitz\">single gene<\/a>, said Ernest Turro of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/even-mild-covid-19-cases-can-deliver-antibody-protection-for-life-study-finds\/\" title=\"Even Mild COVID-19 Cases Can Deliver Antibody Protection For Life, Study Finds\">senior author<\/a> of the study.<\/p>\n<p>Syndromes like these can go unnoticed because the traits are sometimes so subtle doctors can\u2019t recognize them by just looking at patients, said Dr. Charles Billington, a pediatric geneticist at the University of Minnesota who was not involved in the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo certainly this wasn\u2019t something that we necessarily had a name for,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re learning more about these syndromes that we recognize only once we are seeing the cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said the mutations occurred in a small \u201cnon-coding\u201d gene, meaning it doesn\u2019t provide instructions for making proteins.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, all but nine of the nearly 1,500 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zg-team-discovers-genes-that-turn-horses-into-racehorses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genes<\/a> known to be linked to intellectual disability in general are protein-coding genes.<\/p>\n<p>Most large genetic studies so far have used a sequencing technology that typically leaves out genes that don\u2019t code for proteins.<\/p>\n<p>This study used more comprehensive \u201cwhole-genome\u201d sequencing data from 77,539 people enrolled in the British 100,000 Genomes Project, including 5,529 with an intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should scientists continue to pursue genetic research?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The rare mutations researchers found in the gene, called RNU4-2, were strongly associated with the potential to develop intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<p>The finding \u201copens the door to diagnoses\u201d for thousands of families, said study author Andrew Mumford, research director of the South West England NHS Genomic Medicine Service.<\/p>\n<p>More research is needed, Mumford said. How the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/man-develops-copper-rings-eyes-doctors-make-shocking-discovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mutation<\/a> causes the disorder remains unclear and there is no treatment.<\/p>\n<p>But Billington said labs should be able to offer testing for this condition relatively quickly.
