From now on, the civil war inside the GOP will be between those who understand they must do to Democrats what Democrats have done to Trump, and those who think they can trundle along with business as usual.<\/p>\n<p>And make no mistake, that divide in the Republican Party is very real \u2014 and now, very obvious. In the wake of Trump\u2019s conviction Thursday, for example, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was submissively silent for most of the day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1111714548\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-56848ecc8756d909dccda9b2f9642d9e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-56848ecc8756d909dccda9b2f9642d9e\"><\/div>\n<p>Not that his conspicuous silence was a surprise. Recall that a year ago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/09\/politics\/republicans-congress-reactions-trump-indictment\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">McConnell was likewise silent<\/a> for hours after Trump was indicted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/four-mccarthy-holdouts-get-top-house-committee-seats\/\" title=\"Four McCarthy Holdouts Get Top House Committee Seats\">classified documents probe<\/a>, as was minority Whip John Thune. Eventually, McConnell issued the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LeaderMcConnell\/status\/1796343412914004233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weakest possible statement<\/a> late on Thursday,\u00a0as did Thune, who belatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/republican-lawmakers-rally-to-trumps-defense-after-guilty-verdict\">called<\/a> the Manhattan trial \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d and bemoaned the \u201cpartisan nature of this prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans were not silent but should have been. Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, whose last notable action before leaving office was to veto a bill that would have protected children from transgender genital mutilation, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AsaHutchinson\/status\/1796298603180515374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued a craven statement<\/a> that seemed to accept the legitimacy of the trial and conviction: \u201cIt is not easy to see a former President and the presumptive GOP nominee convicted of felony crimes; but the jury verdict should be respected.\u00a0An appeal is in order but let\u2019s not diminish the significance of this verdict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hutchinson wasn\u2019t alone in calling for the rigged, obviously corrupt trial and Soviet-style conviction to be \u201crespected.\u201d The former GOP governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, who is now running for U.S. Senate, encouraged people \u201cto respect the verdict and legal process\u201d and invoked the \u201crule of law\u201d \u2014 a curious thing to say given how the entire trial made a mockery of the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>Former National Security Advisor and neocon hack John Bolton <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AmbJohnBolton\/status\/1796297007155269746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Trump\u2019s conviction was a \u201cfire-bell in the night,\u201d and that Republicans should \u201cchange course\u201d and \u201cnot nominate a convicted felon for President,\u201d as if he were reading DNC talking points. (Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance had the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance1\/status\/1796340147077743082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perfect riposte to this<\/a>: \u201cJohn Bolton finally encounters a war he doesn\u2019t want to fight.\u201d)<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-747a94fdb122545158f17ad65b69f321 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-747a94fdb122545158f17ad65b69f321\"><\/div>\n<p>Republicans like these should be purged from the party immediately \u2014 especially McConnell. As Rachel Bovard <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rachelbovard\/status\/1796322975580660171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted on X<\/a>, \u201cThere is nothing stopping Senate Rs from calling the leadership election now.\u201d Given what the stakes are now, and what we know Democrats are willing to do to cling to power, the only way forward is to do politics on the terms Democrats themselves have set.<\/p>\n<p>That means if you\u2019re a GOP candidate or elected official, and especially if you\u2019re a Republican district attorney or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-ag-barr-authorizes-federal-prosecutors-to-pursue-substantial-allegations-of-voting-irregularities-before-2020-election-is-certified\/\" title=\"BREAKING: AG Barr Authorizes Federal Prosecutors to Pursue \"Substantial Allegations\" of Voting Irregularities Before 2020 Election is Certified\">attorney general<\/a>, and your response to Trump\u2019s conviction isn\u2019t to begin making plans to indict President Biden and other leading Democrats on criminal charges, then you have no idea what time it is and need to be primaried, sidelined, or otherwise run out of the party. <\/p>\n<p>Take Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, a Republican who appears to live in a fantasy world. On Thursday in the wake of Trump\u2019s conviction, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JasonMiyaresVA\/status\/1796314559218638921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miyares said<\/a>, \u201cIn America, we don\u2019t seek to jail political opponents \u2014 we seek to defeat them at the ballot box.\u201d Actually, Jason, in America only one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/first-trans-state-senator-predicts-future-trans-president\/\" title=\"First Trans State Senator Predicts Future Trans President\">major political party<\/a> does that. The other one holds show trials and imprisons their political opponents on fake charges.<\/p>\n<p>Put bluntly, Republicans have to make Democrats play by their own rules. They have to inflict pain ruthlessly on Democrats with endless show trials and lawfare, just as Democrats have done to Trump. The leftist radicals who run the Democrat Party only understand power, and they will only stop when they are force-fed their own medicine over and over. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-54a47f08b0cbd3cdddcfd91b4a56ac1e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-54a47f08b0cbd3cdddcfd91b4a56ac1e\"><\/div>\n<p>What does that messaging look like? It looks like Anthony Sabatini, a Florida Republican who said Thursday he\u2019s running for Congress \u201cto imprison as many Democrats as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"UEZ15M2syHkpFvac7r4QqJb8i\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m running for Congress to imprison as many Democrats as possible<\/p>\n<p>Vote for me if you believe Democrats are the enemy and must be jailed &#038; removed from public life <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/c1JWTh1vVJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/c1JWTh1vVJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Anthony Sabatini (@AnthonySabatini) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnthonySabatini\/status\/1796317217984037059?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 30, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As my Federalist colleague Sean Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/seanmdav\/status\/1796301843338789070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Thursday<\/a>, \u201cIf you\u2019re a Republican running for office, you can just go ahead and throw away all of your elegant little policy proposals for this or that corporate exclusion or tax subsidy. Give me a list of which Democrat officials you\u2019re going to put in prison, or get lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does that look like in practice? Here\u2019s one idea. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton should immediately indict President Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland for the ongoing crisis at the border, which in every way is a criminal human-trafficking conspiracy that they have orchestrated and sustained by flouting federal immigration law.<\/p>\n<p>Top Republicans like McConnell will never support anything like that, which means they\u2019re worse than worthless \u2014 they\u2019re actively on the side of Democrats. The only explanation for the weak, belated statement from McConnell is that he\u2019s glad Trump was convicted and hopes he goes to prison.<\/p>\n<p>If the Republican Party is going to be anything other than controlled opposition for the Democrats, fiddling while the republic burns, it needs to purge its ranks of snakes like McConnell and elevate those who aren\u2019t afraid of playing by Democrats\u2019 rules. A good way to separate the two groups would be to start asking Republican officeholders and candidates whether they\u2019d be willing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ny-prosecutors-convene-grand-jury-to-hear-evidence-in-criminal-investigation-into-trump-others\/\" title=\"NY Prosecutors Convene Grand Jury To Hear Evidence In Criminal Investigation Into Trump, Others\">bring criminal charges<\/a> against high-ranking Democrats and, if they can, imprison them.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the world Democrats have called into being with this show trial. They are the ones who have cried \u201cno quarter\u201d in this fight. The least Republicans can do at this point is accept their terms and enter the fight on equal footing.<\/p>\n<p>Why is that so important? For two reasons. The first, mentioned above, is that Democrats will never stop unless they are made to suffer exactly what they would inflict on Republicans. If we\u2019re going to start jailing political opponents in America, then it has to go both ways. The other reason is now that Democrats have done this, have made a mockery of our justice system, the only way to restore faith in the rule of law is to make those responsible pay for what they\u2019ve done and bring them to justice. If Democrats get away with this, Americans will be justified in thinking the entire system is illegitimate.<\/p>\n<p>So Republican officials have a choice to make.
