Judge Merchan&#8217;s conduct and directives during the trial have sparked criticism, casting doubts on the trial&#8217;s fairness.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the many factors tainting a New York jury\u2019s conviction of former President Donald Trump is the fact that the judge who oversaw the Soviet-style show trial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-wrecks-reporter-in-heated-presser-youre-wrong-youre-wrong-youre-wrong\/\" title=\"DeSantis Wrecks Reporter In Heated Presser: \u2018You\u2019re Wrong, You\u2019re Wrong, You\u2019re Wrong\u2019\">previously donated<\/a> to Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-this-average-american-is-voting-for-donald-trump\/\" title=\"Why This Average American Is Voting for Donald Trump\">presidential campaign<\/a>. The judge\u2019s daughter also represents Democrat clients who raised millions off the trial.<\/p>\n<p>In an unsurprising move, the jury in deep-blue Manhattan <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/30\/kangaroo-court-convicts-trump-following-soviet-show-trial-in-new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> Trump guilty Thursday on all counts related to a payment his then-lawyer made to a pornographer as part of a nondisclosure agreement. The saga marks the first time in U.S. history a major party has weaponized the justice system to convict its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccarthy-vows-to-hold-manhattan-da-accountable-for-unprecedented-abuse-of-power\/\" title=\"McCarthy Vows to Hold Manhattan DA Accountable for \u2018Unprecedented Abuse of Power\u2019\">chief political opponent ahead<\/a> of a contested election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is expected to be sentenced on July 11, which is several days before the Republican presidential nominating convention. <\/p>\n<p>Despite Democrats\u2019 best attempts to cast the show trial as legitimate, the case was rigged against Trump from the start. Case in point: Judge Juan Merchan, who previously donated to Biden\u2019s 2020 reelection bid. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/04\/07\/trump-case-judge-juan-merchan-donated-to-biden-campaign-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, Merchan \u201cdonated $35 to Democratic causes in 2020, including $15 to President Biden\u2019s campaign and $10 to a group dedicated to \u2018resisting \u2026 Donald Trump\u2019s radical right-wing legacy.&#8217;\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The payments were made in July 2020 through ActBlue, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/discover-card-cuts-ties-with-palestinian-terror-linked-organization\/\" title=\"Discover Card Cuts Ties With Palestinian Terror-Linked Organization\">online fundraising platform<\/a> for Democrats and leftist causes. <\/p>\n<p>Merchan\u2019s antagonism towards Trump was on full display throughout the trial. As my colleague John Daniel Davidson recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/30\/judge-merchans-jury-instructions-prove-trumps-trial-is-about-power-not-the-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>, Merchan told jurors ahead of deliberations that \u201cthey <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JonathanTurley\/status\/1795829624502681688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">need not agree on what crime Trump allegedly committed<\/a> to reach a unanimous guilty verdict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Judge Merchan, the jury could come back with a guilty verdict without agreeing on whether Trump committed election fraud, tax fraud, or falsification of business records,\u201d Davidson wrote. \u201cHe essentially divided the jury into three groups of four, saying that if they\u2019re split 4-4-4 on what crime Trump committed, he\u2019d treat that as unanimous. To say this is unusual is of course a gross understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/donald-trump-gag-order-judge-juan-merchan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">placing<\/a> a gag order on Trump, Merchan significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/07\/trump-trial-judge-censors-federalist-writer-former-fec-chairman-from-sharing-key-defense-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limited<\/a> the trial testimony of former Federal Election Commission Chairman Bradley Smith, whose expertise on campaign finance law undermined the case brought by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg against the former president.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just Merchan who has financial ties to Democrats. As separately <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/30\/us-news\/dem-clients-of-daughter-of-judge-in-trump-trial-raised-90m-off-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> by the Post, the judge\u2019s daughter Loren Merchan\u2019s political consulting group \u2014 where Loren serves as president \u2014 represents two Democrat clients who \u201craised at least $93 million in campaign donations\u201d after using the Soviet show trial \u201cin their solicitation emails.\u201d One of these clients is notorious Russia collusion hoaxer Adam Schiff.<\/p>\n<p>Loren also previously served as \u201cdirector of digital persuasion\u201d on now-Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 2020 presidential campaign, according to the report. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., filed a misconduct complaint with New York State Unified Court System, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/29\/stefanik-complaint-judge-merchan-was-intentionally-selected-to-ensure-trump-is-convicted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alleging<\/a> Merchan was \u201cintentionally selected\u201d to oversee Trump\u2019s case. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
