Authorities struggle to control its \u2062spread,\u2064 emphasizing the need\u2063 for urgent action to prevent a national crisis. Measures to combat \u200bthe drug issue must include enhanced border security to safeguard communities and prevent further devastation.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/%20\"><span>Samuel Short<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 30, 2024 at 12:53pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The drug epidemic in the United States unfortunately only shows signs of getting worse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/health\/animal-tranquilizer-overdoses-medetomidine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NewsNation reported<\/a> a new \u201czombie drug\u201d is responsible for a wave of overdoses. Medetomidine, a synthetic animal tranquilizer, is 100 times more potent than xylazine, another tranquilizer also found in street drugs. Medetomidine causes \u201cheightened sedation\u201d and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oklahoma-votes-down-recreational-marijuana\/\" title=\"Oklahoma votes down recreational marijuana\">slowed heart rate<\/a>, which could lead to cardiac arrest. Both medetomidine and xylazine are known to be mixed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-militarys-fentanyl-crisis-may-putting-national-security-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fentanyl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To make the situation more dire, medetomidine does not respond to naloxone, the medication used when a fentanyl overdose occurs. Dr. James Besante, an addiction specialist, told NewsNation, \u201cRight now, we don\u2019t have a drug to reverse an alpha agonist, which is the type of drug these sedatives are. You\u2019d want to provide rescue breathing. The most important thing is that you call 911.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medetomidine first appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dems-worried-marylands-senate-seat-flip-red-real-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland<\/a> in 2022 before spreading to nine total states. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/05\/31\/nx-s1-4974959\/medetomidine-overdose-fentanyl-sedative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR reported<\/a> overdoses were seen in Toronto, Canada as well. Public health advisories have been issued in Illinois and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brenden Hart at Temple University told NPR he started seeing medetomidine appear mixed with fentanyl in patients in April. Doctors began to raise concerns when patients would come in with extremely low heart rates.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bertha Madras of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hilarious-anti-israel-protesters-harvard-struck-2-m-sprinklers-cold-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard<\/a> Medical School and McClean Hospital says the reason for medetomidine\u2019s implementation is still unknown, but it may prolong the high of the user.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities haven\u2019t been able to determine whether the drug is being diverted from veterinary clinics or taken from medications intended for hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Fentanyl on its own is deadly enough even for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elon-musk-confirms-twitter-has-interfered-with-elections\/\" title=\"Elon Musk Confirms Twitter Has Interfered With Elections\">long-time users<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A two-milligram dose of fentanyl can be fatal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is America\u2019s hard drug problem getting even worse?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/are-fentanyl-overdose-deaths-rising-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to USAFacts.org<\/a>, over a quarter of a million Americans have died from fentanyl overdoses since 2018. Over 70,000 people died from fentanyl overdose in 2022. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/alert\/dea-laboratory-testing-reveals-6-out-10-fentanyl-laced-fake-prescription-pills-now-contain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DEA issued a public safety alert<\/a> warning that six out of 10 fake prescription pills that year contained a lethal dose of it.<\/p>\n<p>With fentanyl being mixed with many other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/illegal-day-care-owner-three-employees-arrested-allegedly-spiking-childrens-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal drugs<\/a>, users find themselves in an increasingly dangerous position when xylazine and medetomidine are factored in.<\/p>\n<p>Even for the most hardened drug user, medetomidine can prove deadly, given its unresponsive to current treatments for fentanyl overdose.<\/p>\n<p>As the drug epidemic grows, it\u2019s unfortunately commonplace for more of us to know someone close, like a family member or friend, who has experienced an overdose.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-official-hints-american-support-helping-ukraine-attack-russia-shocking-policy-shift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Joe Biden<\/a> issued a warning that fentanyl was being mixed with xylazine, but his administration must now do more, before the problem with medetomidine spreads to all 50 states and exacerbates an already out-of-control epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>We have known for some time that these deadly drugs are not just being illegally made inside the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Mexican drug cartels and their trafficking operations across the southern border are also to blame.<\/p>\n<p>As if there were more reasons needed for tight border security, the drug epidemic destroying thousands of lives is not a small one.<\/p>\n<p>We must address <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/epidemiologist-warns-not-happening-border-flirting-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the border<\/a> for the safety of our communities.
