Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 30, 2024 at 9:05am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>While the political world\u2019s attention is fixed on the outcome of former President Donald Trump\u2019s so-called hush money trial in New York, you may have missed that President Joe Biden\u2019s administration intimated it would be willing to go one step closer to full-on war with Russia over Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>In a news conference in Moldova on Wednesday, Secretary of State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/secretary-state-antony-blinken-mocked-performing-bizarre-musical-act-ukrainian-bar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony Blinken<\/a> said the administration was considering letting Ukrainian forces use American-supplied weapons to strike within Russian territory, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/blinken-signals-u-s-may-allow-ukraine-to-strike-inside-russia-with-u-s-weapons-61fedb10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the Journal noted, this was \u201cthe first time that a top Biden administration official has publicly indicated that the U.S. is considering the policy shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreviously, the U.S. has said it wouldn\u2019t allow Ukraine to attack targets on Russian territory with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/products\/army-tactical-missile-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATACMS missiles<\/a> or other U.S. weapons,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>During the briefing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidens-secretary-state-blinken-signals-administration-will-support-push-sanction-icc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blinken<\/a> said \u2014 in carefully couched language \u2014 that Ukraine \u201chas to make its own decisions about the best way to effectively defend itself. We\u2019re going to make sure that it has the equipment it needs to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother hallmark of our support for Ukraine over these, now, more than two years has been to adapt as conditions have changed and the battlefield has changed, as what Russia does has changed in terms of how it\u2019s pursuing its aggression and escalation,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve adapted and adjusted, too, and I\u2019m confident we\u2019ll continue to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Blinken\u2019s comments, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2024\/05\/29\/on-the-record-press-gaggle-by-white-house-national-security-communications-advisor-john-kirby-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">briefing<\/a> on Wednesday, \u201cWe do not encourage nor do we enable attacks using U.S. weapons on Russian soil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur support to Ukraine has evolved appropriately as the battlefield conditions have evolved. And that\u2019s not going to change. But right now, there\u2019s also no change to our policy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/report-bidens-offhand-remark-set-stage-toxic-kjp-kirby-press-secretary-rivalry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kirby<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>Just in case that didn\u2019t make it clear that a policy shift has taken place in the Biden administration, officials confirmed to the Journal that there was a rethink underway about the White House\u2019s policy regarding whether the weapons could be used to target Russian territory. A decision hasn\u2019t been reached, however, the officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as other European nations have begun allowing Ukrainian forces to use their weapons to strike inside Russia.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, French President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/wh-readout-biden-call-macron-doesnt-match-frances-look-left\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> said during a news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that France would allow Kyiv\u2019s forces to use Paris-supplied cruise missiles to strike inside Russian territory, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/europe\/macron-permits-ukraine-to-use-french-missiles-to-strike-inside-russia-within-limits-80fe5908?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must allow them to neutralize military sites from which missiles are being fired, military sites from which Ukraine is being attacked,\u201d Macron said regarding the French-supplied Scalp missiles Ukrainians would be using.<\/p>\n<p>He did, however, indicate that the missiles in question would not be used to strike civilian targets or military facilities that are not involved in the Ukrainian invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The Scalp missiles in question have a range of more than 300 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The public statement by Macron, furthermore, comes as Kyiv and its European allies have been pushing the United States to be less restrictive with what Ukraine can use U.S.-supplied weaponry to do.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has had misgivings about letting Ukrainian forces use the weaponry inside Russian territory, and with good reason.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Journal, the administration wants to avoid \u201cany steps that could lead to an escalation in the Ukraine war \u2014 an approach that Kyiv and some of its allies have criticized as giving Moscow a crucial edge on the battlefield. Macron and Scholz were meeting in Germany as allies scramble to reinforce Ukraine and slow the advances of Russian forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can see every point where Russian troops are concentrated. We know all areas from which Russian missiles are launched and combat aircraft take off,\u201d Ukrainian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/zelenskyy-says-working-washington-tie-future-presidents-hands-forcing-support-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> said during a Sunday address.<\/p>\n<p>Hitting these targets, he indicated, \u201cis entirely a political decision. The decision that must be made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right \u2014 and it\u2019s a decision that should be easy, were this not a president who is running a campaign based in part on tarring his opponent as a Muscovite tool.<\/p>\n<p>The reason Ukraine has been denied the use of U.S. weapons to strike within Russia is based on the not-quite-ignorant assumption that Moscow might view the world\u2019s most powerful military supplying weapons to Kyiv to conduct offensives within Russian territory as a de facto declaration of war, ratcheting up tensions between the two nations.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidens-nuclear-armageddon-comments-egregious-even-french-president-emmanuel-macron-speaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macron<\/a> is a bit of an outlier, even in a Europe that\u2019s less skeptical about getting stuck in the mire in Ukraine; he\u2019s one of the few leaders who has refused to rule out using his own troops on the ground in the country, a huge step from merely supplying weaponry.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s another issue: Just like Biden had previously promised to keep American weapons in Ukrainian hands from attacking Russia on Russian soil, he\u2019s also promised to keep American boots off the ground there.<\/p>\n<p>After Macron\u2019s refusal to rule out troop deployment in February, National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Biden \u201chas been clear that the U.S. will not send troops to fight in Ukraine,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/us-will-not-send-troops-to-fight-in-ukraine-white-house-8864139b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agence France-Presse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was the latest in over two years of insisting that U.S. troops would never be stuck in an Eastern European quagmire \u2014 something the president was saying <em>before<\/em> the Russian invasion of Ukraine even happened, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/biden-says-putting-us-troops-ground-ukraine-is-not-table-2021-12-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>The questions practically raise themself, then: If the White House can about-face on the matter of where American-supplied weapons strike, why can\u2019t it about-face on troops, as well? Why should we trust anything that was told to us at the outset of this war if the red line keeps being moved? If Zelenskyy makes a plea for U.S. troops to enter the war, arguing that deploying them or keeping them out \u201cis entirely a political decision\u201d and that it was a \u201cdecision that must be made,\u201d what\u2019s stopping Joe Biden from sending them to save face?<\/p>\n<p>The answers are obvious. The White House can and will about-face, we shouldn\u2019t trust anything, and nothing is stopping Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The proof of that is in the series of decisions that have led us to get more dug in than ever, the same way that Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon did with Vietnam and prior administrations did with Afghanistan. Unlike those wars, this is a disaster that could end in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/breaking-russia-threatens-global-nuclear-fire-ukrainian-drone-strikes-moscow-no-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series of mushroom clouds<\/a>, which is seldom a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>America cannot afford and will not abide by a decision to throw our might 100 percent behind Zelenskyy, no matter what the costs.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason the phrase \u201cAmerica First\u201d resonates with Trump voters. When it comes to this issue \u2014 like so many others \u2014 Biden is America Last. Kyiv and the opinion of Emmanuel Macron and other Eurohawks trump (excuse the pun) our best interest.<\/p>\n<p>While the former president is being tried on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-merchan-issues-last-minute-jury-instruction-designed-convict-trump-even-jurors-dont-agree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mickey Mouse charges in a Manhattan courtroom<\/a>, our current president is busy ensuring that we get stuck with a conflict where the way out for the United States gets more thorny by the day. He hopes we won\u2019t pay attention, one gathers.<\/p>\n<p>Enough is enough.
