Democrats \u2064and Republicans expressed varying\u2063 responses to the potential impact.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> released Thursday had some positive news for former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s reelection chances as he awaits a verdict in his New York <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3018617\/three-things-expect-final-stretch-trump-hush-money-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hush money<\/a> trial.<\/p>\n<p>The NPR\/<em>PBS NewsHour<\/em>\/Marist <a href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/novembers-presidential-election-may-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>national poll<\/a> showed 67% of registered voters nationally wouldn\u2019t be swayed by a guilty verdict against Trump, while 15% said it would make them more likely to vote for him. Another 17% said a guilty verdict would make them less likely to vote for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Jurors are in the process of deciding whether the former president is guilty or not of 34 counts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rep-jordan-subpoenas-former-manhattan-prosecutor-who-pushed-for-trump-indictment\/\" title=\"Rep. Jordan Subpoenas Former Manhattan Prosecutor Who Pushed for Trump Indictment\">falsifying business records related<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-rejects-trump-bid-to-shield-financial-records\/\" title=\"Supreme Court Rejects Trump Bid To Shield Financial Records\">hush money payments<\/a> to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>A verdict could come at any point Thursday, though the exact timing remains unclear. The 12-member jury is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3022007\/trump-trial-jury-deliberates-hush-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>day two<\/a> of deliberations after the prosecution and defense wrapped up their closing arguments on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Among Republicans surveyed in the poll, 25% said a guilty verdict would make them more likely to vote for the former president, while 10% said it would make them less likely to vote for him. Only 7% of Democrats said a guilty verdict would make them more likely to vote for Trump, and 27% said it would make them less likely to vote for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Among coveted independent voters, 15% said a guilty verdict would make them more likely to vote for Trump, and 11% said it would make them less likely.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, 76% of all voters said a not-guilty verdict wouldn\u2019t affect their votes.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Former President Donald Trump gestures as he walks to the courtroom during his hush money trial at Manhattan Criminal Court, Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in New York. The most realistic path for the defense is a hung jury, in which at least one juror dissents.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the jury returns a guilty verdict, the former president is expected to appeal. A conviction would not keep him from running for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArticle 1 of the Constitution sets out three requirements to be president. You have to be 35 years old, a natural-born citizen, and 14 years a resident within the U.S.,\u201d Heritage Foundation legal scholar Hans von Spakovsky told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cBeing a convicted felon is not a bar to being president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump cited the NPR\/Marist poll on Thursday morning before heading into the courtroom. He pointed to his lead of 54% to 42% against President Joe Biden among independent voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s strongest lead among independent voters,\u201d Trump bragged before moving to attack independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJr. is way down \u2014 way, way down,\u201d Trump said, according to a pool report of the trial. He also called Kennedy \u201cextremely liberal, by the way, extremely radical left. I think you know that, but he seems to be hurting Biden probably a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>This week, the Kennedy campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3020944\/rfk-files-fec-complaint-claiming-cnn-biden-trump-engaged-flagrant-violations-planning-debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>filed a complaint<\/a> with the Federal Election Commission alleging that\u00a0CNN colluded with the Biden and Trump\u00a0campaigns to exclude him from the network\u2019s June 27 debate in Atlanta, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>In a multicandidate matchup from the same poll, Kennedy pulled 8% compared to Trump\u2019s 44% support, with Biden at 40%, Green Party candidate Jill Stein at 3%, and independent Cornel West at 2%.
