Agriculture \u200dstands as North Carolina&#8217;s leading $111 billion industry.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 Strengthening competition for specialty crops and improved access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/houston-residents-wait-in-long-lines-for-safe-drinking-water\/\" title=\"Houston residents wait in long lines for safe drinking water\">safe drinking water<\/a> in rural communities are among the North Carolina benefits reaped by the Farm Bill moving on from the Committee on Agriculture in the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Other key impacts are the investments in the farm safety net, incentives to work, and nutrition assistance for those in need.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture is the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/north_carolina\/article_d1772540-16e0-11ef-904a-53134b9b4b71.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>No. 1 industry at $111 billion<\/strong><\/a> in estimated economic impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond the farmgate,\u201d said Rep. David Rouzer, R-N.C., a senior member of the committee, \u201cthis legislation strengthens rural economies across the country, incentivizes work, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_5fb1a97e-19df-11ef-87ca-13064e6e2c72.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>maintains vital nutrition assistance for those who truly need it<\/strong><\/a> while enhancing work opportunities so they aren\u2019t trapped on welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nutrition assistance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/north_carolina\/article_dd8f0be2-185f-11ef-a386-dbcb4c136786.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>has been a pivotal point<\/strong><\/a> for lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>House Resolution 8467 \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 moves on ensuring Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture can address challenges through the Specialty Crop Foreign Competitiveness Report.<\/p>\n<p>Also included are increased payments from 3 cents to 5 cents for economic adjustment assistance to textile mills. The proposal also protects North Carolina\u2019s pork producers, collectively No. 3 in the nation behind Iowa and Minnesota with $3.1 billion in cash receipts, from what Rouzer calls \u201ca patchwork of state-by-state regulations and reinforces the federal government\u2019s role in protecting interstate commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resolution includes assurance rural homeowners can access water quality testing and treatment for PFAS contamination.<\/p>\n<p>PFAS, an acronym for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Studies vary on their harmful effects; more is known about their impact on animals than on humans. PFAS, the Environmental Protection Agency says, \u201care found in water, air, fish, and soil at locations across the nation\u201d and throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>An animal disease prevention program is getting more funding to help protect the livestock and poultry industry. North Carolina ranks No. 1 nationally in poultry and eggs, and No. 4 in broilers (chickens) production.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture research facilities, such as is at N.C.
