Despite securing delegates \u200bearly, concerns over protest votes and his electability linger. The convention shift to \u200dvirtual has received criticism, viewed as shielding \u2064Biden \u200cfrom\u200d scrutiny and potential protests. The nomination process\u2063 must\u2064 occur\u200d before August 7.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democrats\u2019 announcement that President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Joe Biden<\/a> will be named their nominee for president virtually has deflated what little drama could have been expected at the Democratic National Convention.<\/p>\n<p>Biden easily racked up the delegates needed to become the party\u2019s standard-bearer by March, but the continued protest votes against him in Democratic primaries and his perceived weakness as a general election candidate left open the door to the remote possibility of a surprise challenge and even brokered convention when the party meets in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Chicago\">Chicago<\/a> in August. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Democratic National Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3019669\/dnc-nominate-biden-virtually-convention-ohio-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>opted<\/a> to nominate Biden virtually in the coming weeks to ensure he makes it on to the ballot in Ohio, a state with a filing deadline two weeks before the convention, but the knock-on effect of its decision is that the event will now be purely ceremonial.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats had brushed off the possibility of a brokered convention in the days leading up to the DNC announcement. The president trails former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> in most swing state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/trump-vs-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"polls\">polls<\/a>, in part due to concerns over his age but also an enthusiasm gap by progressive voters upset with his handling of Israel\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, no. No one is talking about contingency plans for President Biden,\u201d said former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). \u201cPresident Biden is going to be our nominee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous,\u201d Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said of the notion that Biden could be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean party leaders are not concerned with his election prospects, however. The denials come amid reports of a behind-the-scenes Democratic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3020164\/white-house-election-freakout-biden-what-talking-about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"freakout\">freakout\u201d<\/a> as surveys continue to show Trump gaining support with five months to go before Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there remains the possibility of major protests at the convention related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which have dogged Biden nearly everywhere he goes since the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks. <\/p>\n<p>Those are likely to take place in some form unless Biden, who has stood with Israel despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/once-again-joe-biden-has-failed-a-basic-foreign-policy-test\/\" title=\"Once Again, Joe Biden Has Failed A Basic Foreign Policy Test\">drawing red lines<\/a> on its planned invasion of Rafah, makes a major shift in his stance toward the war. The only question is the size and intensity of them.<\/p>\n<p>The DNC has faced criticism for its decision to nominate Biden through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-plan-virtual-nomination-for-biden-ahead-of-chicago-convention\/\" title=\"Democrats to Hold Virtual Nomination for Biden Before Chicago Convention\">virtual roll call<\/a>. A date for doing so has not been announced, but it must occur sometime before Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey McCall, a media critic and professor of communications at Depauw University, called it a \u201cgutless\u201d move designed to \u201cshield the president from scrutiny and to try to protect him from gaffes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also a clear attempt to derail public scrutiny from potential demonstrators and protesters,\u201d he added. \u201cIn that sense, this step comes off as rather undemocratic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, party officials say there is no clear alternative for Biden as pundits float names from Vice President Kamala Harris to California Gov. Gavin Newsom to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), a progressive surrogate for Biden, said the president remains the best-positioned Democrat to beat Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe party is going to be unified around him,\u201d Khanna said. \u201cHe\u2019s their candidate. He\u2019s got the best shot. He\u2019s got a better shot than any other person that the pundits are floating around who don\u2019t have that brand, name ID, and record as him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no one else that would have a better chance absent Michelle Obama, who is not going to run,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI), a congressman retiring from his Michigan seat at the end of the year, added that the time to nominate anyone other than Biden passed long ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re way past that point,\u201d he told the <em>Washington Examiner. \u201c<\/em>Even though by 20th century standards we\u2019re at the beginning of the campaign, by 21st century standards, we\u2019re in the middle of the campaign. So, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s [going to happen], and I\u2019m not advocating for it either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last time Democrats selected a nominee by vote of delegates who were not already bound<strong> <\/strong>during a convention was in 1956, nearly 70 years ago, and that was to choose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-pass-bill-critics-say-defunds-police-and-reject-proposal-to-condemn-calls-to-abolish-police\/\" title=\"Democrats Pass Bill Critics Say Defunds Police And Reject Proposal To Condemn Calls To \u2018Abolish\u2019 Police\">vice presidential running mate<\/a> for Adlai Stevenson. The move was designed to generate buzz for the ticket, and Sen. Estes Kefauver (D-TN) defeated second-place John F. Kennedy for the role.<\/p>\n<p>The last convention for either party to feature a seriously contested presidential nomination was in 1976, when Gerald Ford narrowly bested Ronald Reagan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the biggest challenge for Biden, according to Democratic strategist Brad Bannon, will be creating drama, not avoiding it.
