Ann Wagner (R-MO), in coordination with Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) in the Senate, has led the Missouri delegation in pressing the speaker to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act to additional states where the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mike-johnson-caught-in-hawley-war-path-over-radiation-compensation-fund\/\" title=\"Mike Johnson embroiled in Hawley's quest for radiation compensation fund\">government tested nuclear weapons<\/a> or mishandled waste. Hawley\u2019s bill, which reauthorizes the program for another five years, passed the Senate in March.<\/p>\n<p>Missouri lawmakers expressed their disappointment on Wednesday after Johnson decided to hold a vote on a \u201cclean\u201d two-year reauthorization next week, citing his opposition to the expansion\u2019s $50 billion price tag. However, Johnson decided later that day to cancel the vote following further conversations with Wagner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter consulting with Congresswoman Wagner, the Majority Leader and Speaker have decided not to bring the proposed RECA reauthorization to the floor next week,\u201d a spokesperson for the speaker told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s office did not lay out a path forward for the program, which expires on June 7. But behind the scenes, Wagner presented Johnson with a proposal to offset the price tag of the legislation, according to a source familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The tactic follows Hawley\u2019s attempts to win over Republican support. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/proposed-bill-would-give-n-y-gov-power-to-detain-citizens-deemed-a-public-health-hazard\/\" title=\"Proposed bill would give N.Y. Gov. power to detain citizens deemed a \u2018public health hazard\u2019\">originally proposed<\/a> a $150 billion bill but winnowed that amount by $100 billion in negotiations with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).<\/p>\n<p>Wagner has ramped up efforts to soften Johnson\u2019s resistance ahead of the program\u2019s expiration.
