Despite scrutiny over flags displayed at his properties, Alito stands by his decision, emphasizing his \u2063commitment to handling these important cases.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/johnathanjones\/%20\"><span>Johnathan Jones<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 29, 2024 at 2:02pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Associate Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito will not recuse himself from cases involving the Jan. 6, 2021, incursion at the U.S. Capitol or from cases involving the 2020 election, he said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-john-bolton-unload-cnns-wolf-blitzer-alitos-display-revolutionary-war-flags\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The jurist<\/a> has faced pressure to recuse himself from the cases for weeks since The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/16\/us\/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> separate stories about flags that were flown at his homes in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>In one instance, the Times reported, an American flag was flown upside down at Alito\u2019s residence in Virginia in January 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Last September, according to the far-left paper, the judge\u2019s New Jersey home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/22\/us\/justice-alito-flag-appeal-to-heaven.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">displayed<\/a> a Revolutionary War-era \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have claimed the flags connect Alito to the protest and eventual incursion at the Capitol. Furthermore, some have argued the flags have damaged his ability to appear impartial in the eyes of the public.<\/p>\n<p>Alito\u2019s wife flew both flags, he told the Times, saying one was displayed during a dispute with a neighbor involving yard signs that were meant to insult the couple.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Alito offered his official response to lawmakers who want him to sit on his hands as the country\u2019s high court prepares to take on cases with far-reaching consequences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/05\/29\/supreme-court-alito-recuse-flag-jan-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/documents\/ae3feb5a-13a4-4f0f-9046-b61a530c40fb.pdf?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Democratic Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gasbag-gop-opponent-uses-kavanaugh-footage-bury-senator-whitehouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheldon Whitehouse<\/a> of Rhode Island and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sen-durbin-beclowns-address-gop-colleagues-remind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dick Durbin<\/a> of Illinois, Alito said he would not recuse himself.<\/p>\n<p>Because he said neither flag flown at his properties warranted him to sit on the sidelines of important cases, he stated, \u201cI am therefore duty-bound to reject your recusal request.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you respect this move?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He also defended his wife Martha-Ann\u2019s right to express herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife is a private citizen, and she possesses the same First Amendment rights as every other American,\u201d Alito told the Senate Democrats. \u201cShe makes her own decisions, and I have always respected her right to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/liberals-smearing-alito-upside-flag-story-real-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alito<\/a> also said that he had no prior knowledge the flags would be displayed and that when he saw them he asked her to take them down.<\/p>\n<p>While addressing outrage that some \u201cStop the Steal\u201d protesters carried the same flag on Jan. 6, the jurist stated that \u201cthe use of an old historic flag by a new group does not necessarily drain that flag of all other meanings\u201d and that Mrs. Alito had no knowledge the flags had been displayed at the Capitol by protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Alito told the Times two weeks ago he had \u201cno involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag\u201d outside his home in Virginia in early 2021.<\/p>\n<p>He added the upside-down American flag was \u201cbriefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor\u2019s use of objectionable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alito-questioned-after-wife-flew-upside-down-american-flag-in-yard-after-2020-election\/\" title=\"Alito questioned over wife's display of upside-down flag post-2020 election\">personally insulting language<\/a> on yard signs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An inverted American flag has historically been used as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/something-odd-reportedly-happened-american-flag-flying-outside-us-capitol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a signal of distress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag was designed by Col. Joseph Reed during his time serving George Washington during the American Revolution, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanflags.com\/blog\/post\/an-appeal-to-heaven-flag-meaning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Flags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The website further noted, \u201cGeneral Washington chose the tree as a further symbol of independence. He believed that although the colonists were going against a tremendous [British] military force, an even greater power sustained them. They could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-graham-rep-cuellar-hold-press-conference-on-biden-border-crisis\/\" title=\"Sen. Graham, Rep.
