Internal emails obtained by The Daily Wire reveal the \u2064surveillance, including tracking through Google and LexisNexis alerts. This monitoring aimed to influence school boards regarding conservative policies, sparking conflicts and federal intervention.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>A Department of Justice unit dedicated to \u201cpreventing and responding to\u201d \u201chate crimes\u201d tracked the conservative education policy group Moms for Liberty in the same manner it tracked the Ku Klux Klan, according to internal emails obtained by The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>Moms For Liberty was tracked by the DOJ\u2019s Community Relations Service (CRS) alongside symbols such as the noose, the Confederate flag, and the swastika. The only other groups whose movements were similarly tracked, the emails show, were the Ku Klux Klan, a second KKK-style group, and the Oath Keepers.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ concealed the records from the public by ignoring a Freedom of Information Act request, but released them pursuant to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/daily-wire-sues-biden-doj-for-concealing-records-on-its-partisan-riot-squad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> filed by America First Legal on behalf of The Daily Wire. They show the Community Relations Service, which says its role is \u201cpreventing and responding to community tensions and hate crimes, bias, bullying, and discrimination,\u201d tracked targets like Moms for Liberty through Google and LexisNexis alerts.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ did not return a request for comment on why it was tracking Moms for Liberty. It appears to have used its tracking of Moms for Liberty to identify school boards considering enacting conservative-leaning education policy. It then pressured school boards to defer to the DOJ to resolve the differences of opinion between duly-elected conservative officials and leftist activists, instead of enacting platforms they won elections on.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire obtained emails from DOJ-CRS \u201cConciliation Specialist\u201d Hannah Levine. The emails suggest that she did little other than track supposed \u201chate\u201d by setting up Google Alerts and LexisNexis alerts for keywords. For example, she scoured the news for articles that said \u201cwashington, dc n-word\u201d and \u201cwashington, dc confederate flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On July 20, 2023, a Google Alert set for\u201d\u2018moms for liberty\u2019 virginia\u201d turned up an article that said that the \u201cVirginia Department of Education releases new policies for transgender students.\u201d Days later, Levine wrote to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/44-san-francisco-schools-to-see-name-changes\/\" title=\"44 San Francisco schools to see name changes\">school board members<\/a> in Roanoke County, Virginia, to \u201coffer our services in conflict resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCRS is aware of ongoing community tensions in Roanoke County following the release of the new model policies for transgender students. I\u2019d like to connect to see if we might be able to offer support and services as you work to manage conflict within the community related to this,\u201d she wrote in an email that was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-admin-cites-community-tensions-as-mandate-to-mediate-school-districts-adoption-of-youngkins-trans-policies\">reported<\/a> by The Daily Wire last August.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin had drafted a \u201cmodel\u201d policy that would prevent schools from gender-transitioning children without their parents\u2019 consent, which school boards had the option to adopt. In deep-red Roanoke County, Youngkin won twice as many votes as his Democratic opponent, with similar results down-ballot.<\/p>\n<p>In a democracy, that meant that the locality had chosen to implement conservative policy. In the United States, schools are locally controlled. Yet CRS seemed to ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-marshall-mental-health-crisis-worse-than-covid\/\" title=\"Sen. Marshall: Mental health crisis worse than COVID\">local school board members<\/a> to defer to CRS because of \u201ctensions\u201d between the elected leaders who had an overwhelming mandate, and a tiny band of leftist agitators.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire compiled a list of alerts the DOJ unit had set to monitor, based on the emails produced. The words tracked by the DOJ official, often paired with jurisdictions such as \u201cwashington, dc\u201d or \u201cvirginia,\u201d were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>antisemit*<\/li>\n<li>bias<\/li>\n<li>bigot*<\/li>\n<li>bullying<\/li>\n<li>confederate flag<\/li>\n<li>Daleneo Martin [a black teen who was shot by police after he took off in a stolen car as police tried to apprehend him, trapping the police officer in the car as he crashed it into a house, whose family alleged that his civil rights were violated]<\/li>\n<li>deface<\/li>\n<li>disability<\/li>\n<li>discriminat*<\/li>\n<li>full haus [which the Southern Poverty Law Center claims is a white supremacist group in West Virginia]<\/li>\n<li>hate speech<\/li>\n<li>hate symbol<\/li>\n<li>homophobi*<\/li>\n<li>Irvo Otieno [a mentally ill Kenyan who was asphyxiated by sheriff\u2019s deputies and hospital guards attempting to restrain the \u201ccombative\u201d man in a psychiatric facility, and whose family hired civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump to extract a payout]<\/li>\n<li>islamophob*<\/li>\n<li>klan<\/li>\n<li>noose<\/li>\n<li>n-word<\/li>\n<li><strong>moms for liberty<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>oath keepers<\/li>\n<li>protest<\/li>\n<li>racis*<\/li>\n<li>\u201cred truck bakery\u201d [a bakery that claimed it was harassed by conservatives after it gave free coffee to Black Lives Matter activists, but not those who believed \u201call lives matter]<\/li>\n<li>sexism<\/li>\n<li>shooting police-involved<\/li>\n<li>slur<\/li>\n<li>swastika<\/li>\n<li>tension*<\/li>\n<li>vigil<\/li>\n<li>white supremac*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no evidence that Moms for Liberty or elected officials in Roanoke were committing hate crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, DOJ seemed to be operating on the premise that either the Republican governor\u2019s proposed policy was itself \u201chate,\u201d or that lawless leftist activists created \u201ctensions,\u201d which opened the door to federal intervention designed to diffuse the tensions by appeasing them. Two leftist protesters were detained by police for allegedly disrupting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maryland-school-district-announces-policy-to-push-anti-racist-thinking-in-preschool-redefine-discrimination-and-racism\/\" title=\"Maryland School District Announces Policy to Push \u2018Anti-Racist Thinking\u2019 In Preschool, Redefine \u2018Discrimination\u2019 and \u2018Racism\u2019\">school board meeting<\/a> on the topic by screaming.<\/p>\n<p>The emails show that CRS at times pressured locals, using emails from doj.gov accounts, to accept their \u201cservices,\u201d pestering them when they ignored them or said they had no interest. CRS presented itself as a neutral arbitrator on issues like Youngkin\u2019s transgender policy even as CRS provided ideological \u201ctrainings\u201d such as \u201cTransgender Training for Law Enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice called the findings \u201ca new low for the Department of Justice.\u201d telling The Daily Wire<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reject the notion that advocating for parental rights and the well-being of children is an act of hate and we call on the Department of Justice to clarify its position on this matter,\u201d Justice told The Daily Wire. \u201cThe actions of the federal government should never infringe upon the rights of parents to engage in the democratic process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the top item in the Moms for Liberty Google alert that flagged Youngkin\u2019s policy was an article about the \u201csick strategy of smearing moms as Nazis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another Moms for Liberty Google alert said \u201cAmerica First Legal Launches Investigation Into Government Collusion with the Extremist SPLC to Target Parents\u2019 Rights Advocate Groups,\u201d pointing to an <a href=\"https:\/\/aflegal.org\/america-first-legal-launches-investigation-into-government-collusion-with-the-extremist-splc-to-target-parents-rights-advocate-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> that said that the SPLC labels mainstream, center-right groups like Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education as \u201cextremists,\u201d while the DOJ treats SPLC as a source of credible information.<\/p>\n<p>During the Obama administration, the CRS\u2019s budget was $12.5 million, but it grew to $15.5 million by 2019. In 2020, Donald Trump unsuccessfully proposed eliminating CRS after the Heritage Foundation said it was only stoking racial conflict. It has grown since, with the Biden administration requesting $29 million for fiscal 2025, which would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/jmd\/media\/1342751\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">double<\/a> its Obama-era size.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The DOJ&#8217;s unit on &#8220;hate crimes&#8221; surveilled Moms for Liberty, a conservative education group, akin to how it watched the Ku Klux Klan, as revealed in internal emails from The Daily Wire.
