Partnering with Triton Submarines, Connor aims to highlight advancements in \u2064submersible technology\u200d for \u200bsafe \u2064and \u200ceffective deep-sea \u200bexploration, following the tragic OceanGate incident.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/russdavis\/%20\"><span>Jack Davis<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 29, 2024 at 7:33am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>An Ohio billionaire is planning to revisit the wreck of the Titanic in a deep-sea trip designed to prove it can be done.<\/p>\n<p>Real estate investor Larry Connor revealed his plan as the one-year anniversary of the OceanGate disaster, in which a deep-sea submersible imploded on the ocean floor and killed all five people aboard, approaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ohio-billionaire-to-take-deep-sea-submersible-to-titanic-to-prove-its-safe-after-oceangate-implosion\/\" title=\"Ohio billionaire plans to explore Titanic in submersible to ensure safety post OceanGate incident\">show people worldwide<\/a> that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way,\u201d Connor said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/travel\/submersible-industry-after-oceangate-6b412e70?mod=hp_lead_pos8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Connor will be working with Patrick Lahey, who operates Triton Submarines and specializes in building submersibles for deep sea exploration.<\/p>\n<p>Lahey said the implosion of OceanGate\u2019s Titan sent shock waves through the deep-sea exploration industry, as the incident sparked fears nothing was safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis tragedy had a chilling effect on people\u2019s interest in these vehicles,\u201d he said. \u201cIt reignited old myths that only a crazy person would dive in one of these things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lahey then related how Connor approached him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called me up and said, \u2018You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that and that Titan was a contraption.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Would you want to see the Titanic wreckage?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lahey said the OceanGate vehicle was not rigorously tested as are the submersibles he builds. Connor said the two-person vehicle Lahey will build to take the two of them to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/snopes-tries-pin-titanic-sub-disaster-elon-musk-basic-science-fact-makes-ruling-impossible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Titanic<\/a> will be made possible only by advances in technology and materials. The vehicle is advertised as being able to dive to 4,000 meters, just beyond the depth where the Titanic rests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOurs is just not a trip to the Titanic,\u201d \u00a0Connor said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/28\/science\/titanic-submersible-ohio-billionaire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a research mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other purpose is to demonstrate to people around the globe that you can build a revolutionary, first-of-its-kind sub and dive it safely and successfully to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rare-deep-sea-anglerfish-washes-up-in-southern-california\/\" title=\"Rare anglerfish found on Southern California shore.\">great depths<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Connor said the cost of the sub is well into the millions of dollars. The Journal report said the sub was listed on Triton\u2019s website as costing $20 million.<\/p>\n<p>Connor plans to call the acrylic-hulled submersible \u201cThe Explorer \u2014 Return to the Titanic,\u201d and is still in the design phase, per the Times.<\/p>\n<p>He said the vehicle will have a 320-degree view.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrankly, the technology didn\u2019t exist even six or eight years ago,\u201d Connor said. \u201cIt\u2019s only been with recent developments in the last five years that you could build this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his goal is to spur interest in research underneath the sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way, in my limited experience, to explore the ocean, is in a submersible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m concerned that people associate diving subs, especially new or different subs, with danger or tragedy,\u201d he said, noting that the sub will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/navy-detected-titanic-submersibles-implosion-5-days-ago-kept-quiet-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully tested<\/a> and take more than two years to build.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can\u2019t do it, what we call \u2018s and s\u2019 \u2014 safely and successfully \u2014 we\u2019re just not going to do it,\u201d Mr. Connor said. \u201cWe\u2019re not thrill-seekers. We\u2019re not big risk-takers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard has indicated there is no end date in sight for the investigation into the implosion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/authorities-announce-official-probe-launched-catastrophic-loss-titanic-submersible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Titan<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/people\/news\/titan-submersible-oceangate-titanic-investigation-b2551060.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.K. Independent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Titan Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) remains in the fact-finding phase of the investigation and is collecting all relevant evidence and information.
