The \u2063ongoing conflict \u2064involves significant military actions and has\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/israel-and-hamas-agree-to-temporary-cease-fire-swap-of-50-hostages-for-150-palestinian-prisoners\/\" title=\"Israel and Hamas Agree to Temporary Cease-Fire, Swap of 50 Hostages for 150 Palestinian Prisoners\">drawn international criticism<\/a> for\u2062 civilian \u2064casualties.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israel\u2019s<\/a> war against <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Hamas<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gaza<\/a> will likely extend past the end of the calendar year, Israeli national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Hanegbi said Israeli officials expect another seven months of war, which stands in sharp contrast to the growing international backlash calling for a ceasefire that Israel has incurred for the way it has conducted the war, but it also continues Israel\u2019s streak of defiance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-50-years-of-lies-and-gaffes\/\" title=\"Joe Biden: 50 Years Of Lies and Gaffes\">international pressure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect another seven months of fighting in order to deepen the accomplishments and achieve what we have defined as \u2018the destruction of the governmental and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/army-leaders-join-gen-milley-and-release-statement-saying-there-is-no-role-for-us-army-in-martial-law-in-determining-elections\/\" title=\"Army Leaders Join Gen. Milley and Release Statement Saying There Is \u201cNo Role\u201d for US Army in Martial Law in Determining Elections\">military capabilities<\/a> of Hamas,\u2019\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/israel\/war-against-hamas-will-last-at-least-until-end-of-2024-says-israeli-security-chief-qwt7y972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in an interview with Kan Reshet Bet radio.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli forces entered Gaza on Oct. 27, 2023, about three weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Hamas<\/a> carried out the Oct. 7 terrorist attack that ignited the conflict. Hamas killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped another approximately 250 people, about half of whom are believed to still be held hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli forces began operations in the north and urged Palestinian civilians to flee south, which many did. More than 1 million people fled to the city of Rafah, the southernmost point in Gaza, which is along the border with Egypt. It\u2019s also Hamas\u2019s last remaining stronghold in the enclave, where multiple battalions are intact.<\/p>\n<p>Israel began operating in Rafah in early May, despite repeated warnings from the Biden administration, the United Nations, and several other Western governments and nongovernmental organizations that operations could result in untold numbers of civilian casualties. Nearly 1 million Palestinians have now fled from Rafah, moving closer to the coast in Al-Mawasi.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Smoke rises following an Israeli airstrike east of Rafah, Gaza Strip on Monday, May 6, 2024. (AP Photo\/Ismael Abu Dayyah)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the weekend, Israeli forces launched an airstrike targeting two Hamas leaders in Rafah. The strike somehow led to a secondary explosion and fire, which ultimately killed about 45 people believed to be civilians sheltering nearby, according to Gaza officials.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s military is investigating what occurred, but a military spokesman told reporters that the munition used could not have \u201cignited a fire of this size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several countries\u2019 leaders condemned Israel for the strike, though the U.S. wasn\u2019t as quick to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden said earlier this month he would stop U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-democrats-ask-biden-to-withhold-military-assistance-to-israel\/\" title=\"House Democrats urge Biden to pause military aid to Israel\">offensive military aid<\/a> to Israel if it carried out a full ground invasion of Rafah, and White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3019954\/us-not-assess-israel-full-scale-rafah-operation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Tuesday that the United States had not assessed that Israel has done that yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result of this strike on Sunday, I have no policy changes to speak to,\u201d Kirby said. \u201cIt just happened. The Israelis are going to investigate it. We\u2019re going to be taking great interest in what they find in that investigation. And we\u2019ll see where it goes from there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that this strike did kill two senior Hamas heads who are directly responsible for attacks,\u201d Kirby added. \u201cWe\u2019ve also said many times: Israel must take every precaution possible to do more to protect innocent life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rafah is a strategically significant area in Gaza for Israel\u2019s intention to defeat Hamas due to its proximity to Egypt. Hanegbi said Israel controls approximately 75% of the Philadelphi Corridor, which is the border between Gaza and Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis area has been historically used to smuggle weapons to terrorists in Gaza,\u201d Seth\u00a0Frantzman, an adjunct professor fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> about the Philadelphi Corridor. \u201cThe [Israel Defense Forces] will continue to uncover tunnels and terrorist infrastructure, such as rocket launchers, in Rafah. It remains to be seen if and when the IDF may reach the sea, however, there are challenges ahead as the IDF presses into densely populated areas, such as the Rafah Camp area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli strike and subsequent fire that killed dozens came just days after the International\u00a0Court\u00a0of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/sites\/default\/files\/case-related\/192\/192-20240524-ord-01-00-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> that Israel must \u201cimmediately halt\u201d its offensive into the Rafah enclave in Gaza and news of the\u00a0International\u00a0Criminal\u00a0Court\u00a0issuing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/3011842\/blinken-hints-retaliation-for-icc-allegations-against-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrest warrants for<\/a> Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin\u00a0Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israeli security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi forecasts the conflict with Hamas in Gaza to persist beyond the current year.
