Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 29, 2024 at 6:00am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Whatever happens this week in a Manhattan courtroom, at least Donald Trump can say that he got good news from one jury.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it may have been in France, and its decisions aren\u2019t legally binding \u2014 but if it can\u2019t be called a loss for Alvin Bragg, it can at least be called a jolt to whatever\u2019s left of #TheResistance.<\/p>\n<p>As you may have heard, a Trump biopic called \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d debuted to an eight<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-comedy-club-that-welcomed-louis-c-k-after-scandal-says-no-to-cosby-appearance\/\" title=\"NYC Comedy Club that Welcomed Louis C.K. After Scandal Says \u2018No\u2019 to Cosby Appearance\">-minute standing ovation<\/a> at the Cannes Film Festival last week. One assumes this isn\u2019t because it was particularly great; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/donald-trump-movie-the-apprentice-dan-snyder-feud-1236010060\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a>, the movie was more of a hatchet job and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/another-legal-battle-trump-calls-apprentice-biopic-garbage-threatens-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn\u2019t focus on the period of his life<\/a> that actually included the hit NBC reality show that gave the film its title, but rather on his early career.<\/p>\n<p>The description provided to media called it \u201ca story about the origins of a system \u2026 featuring larger-than-life characters and set in a world of power and ambition,\u201d Variety reported. \u201cThe film delves into a profound exploration of the ascent of an American dynasty. It meticulously charts the genesis of a \u2018zero-sum\u2019 culture, one that accentuates the dichotomy between winners and losers, the dynamics between the mighty and the vulnerable, and the intricate psychology of persona.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does that include? Quoth <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/apprentice-donald-trump-team-cease-and-desist-letter-sebastian-stan-jeremy-strong-1236015819\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a>: \u201cThe movie, which was independently produced, stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Cohn. It presents a damning portrait of the former president as an ethically compromised, philanderer who stiffs contractors and cuts deals with the mob to get his buildings completed. It includes other controversial details, including a scene where Trump rapes his first wife, Ivana, and depicts him abusing amphetamines to lose weight, as well as undergoing liposuction and plastic surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Never mind the fact that the story about raping his first wife was debunked by \u2026 his first wife. Or the fact that the film\u2019s producers and director seem to be at odds about what the purpose is. (The producers issued a statement that the movie gives \u201ca fair and balanced portrait of the former president.\u201d Director Ali Abbasi apparently didn\u2019t get the memo, or they didn\u2019t get his: \u201cThere is no nice metaphorical way to deal with the rising wave of fascism,\u201d the director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/donald-trump-movie-the-apprentice-cannes-standing-ovation-1235904113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> after the premiere. \u201cIt\u2019s time to make movies relevant. It\u2019s time to make movies political again.\u201d Right.)<\/p>\n<p>Instead, let\u2019s talk about the fact that, despite the fact that it was the biggest news out of the annual French film festival this year \u2014 getting both an <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/markets-festivals\/sebastian-stan-the-apprentice-cannes-standing-ovation-trump-1236009678\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight-minute standing ovation<\/a> and a cease-and-desist letter from Trump\u2019s attorneys at the same time \u2014 it curiously didn\u2019t take home any awards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/in-the-know\/4686877-the-apprentice-donald-trump-biopic-film-shut-out-at-cannes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> noted that \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d didn\u2019t get love from the committee, \u201cwith the top prize going to \u2018Anora,\u2019 a romantic drama set in New York; filmmaker Sean Baker became the first American to win the top award, the Palme d\u2019Or, since 2011.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nor did it take home any of the other numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festival-cannes.com\/en\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trophies<\/a>, at that. That\u2019s too bad \u2014 well, for those involved with this thing, at least \u2014 considering that Variety reported, \u201cthere was intense interest from potential buyers for the film, which is seeking U.S. distribution ahead of the election in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will you be voting for Donald Trump?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not that a Cannes award necessarily means you\u2019ll get a domestic distribution deal \u2014 or that you won\u2019t, for that matter. It would have helped a movie that seems destined to become a cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre one way or the other, however.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for instance, that both Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/9-key-points-from-trump-campaign-press-conference-on-challenges-to-election-results\/\" title=\"9 Key Points from Trump Campaign Press Conference on Challenges to Election Results\">legal team<\/a> and one of the film\u2019s top financiers both don\u2019t want it to come out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis \u2018film\u2019 is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day and doesn\u2019t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store. It belongs in a dumpster fire,\u201d said Steven Cheung, the Trump campaign\u2019s communications director.<\/p>\n<p>Two people who had read the cease-and-desist letter from Trump\u2019s people warned the independent filmmakers against pursuing a U.S. distribution deal, Variety reported.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there\u2019s the matter of Dan Snyder, former owner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/return-redskins-nfl-head-coach-caught-bootleg-merchandise-subtle-allusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Redskins<\/a>\/Football Team\/Commanders\/Whatever.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that Snyder, through his company Kinematics, has financed \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d \u2014 and he\u2019s not happy with the final results, especially considering he donated over $1 million to Trump\u2019s inaugural committee and another $100,000 to his re-election campaign four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>According to Variety, Snyder \u201cput money into the film via Kinematics because he was under the impression that it was a flattering portrayal of the 45th president. Snyder finally saw a cut of the film in February and was said to be furious. Kinematics\u2019 lawyers were enlisted to fight the release of \u2018The Apprentice,\u2019 and the cease-and-desist letters began flying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Kinematics\u2019 president has insisted that they \u201crun our company without the involvement of any other third parties,\u201d seeing one of the largest financiers of the pic firing off a cease-and-desist letter at the same time that the candidate that it reportedly defames does the same thing never has a meliorative effect on a film\u2019s ability to garner a deal.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, don\u2019t count on this thing being released anytime before the election. In fact, if it makes it into theaters before 2029, when and if all talk of Donald Trump likely becomes moot one way or another \u2014 he\u2019s either term-limited out if he wins the election or probably irrelevant in the GOP choosing process if he doesn\u2019t \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/donald-trump-biopic-releases-1st-image-know-far-worried\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Abbasi<\/a> will be a very lucky man.<\/p>\n<p>Even if it does make it into your local cinema before ballots begin being cast, it probably won\u2019t have any effect; not only does an indie hatchet-job about Trump sound like it\u2019ll flop on a scale that\u2019ll make Oliver Stone\u2019s George W. Bush film \u201cW.\u201d look like a critical and commercial success, it also sounds so much like over-the-top dreck that one wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see it dethrone \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tUkE9qaVgmo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mommie Dearest<\/a>\u201d as the reigning title holder for World\u2019s Most Unintentionally Funny Biopic.<\/p>\n<p>Considering \u201cMommie Dearest\u201d was released in 1981, that\u2019s no small feat \u2014 assuming \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d is up for it. It certainly seems to be, from all descriptions \u2014 and the fact that the Cannes crowd, not known as a hive of covert MAGA-loving expats, weren\u2019t willing to throw it a bone seems to indicate they knew junk when they saw it. That means whatever happens in a Manhattan courtroom this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/msnbc-lawyer-worried-two-trump-jurors-might-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least one jury<\/a> gave Trump a very good sign.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
